HP was painfully aware of the TouchPad‘s hardware shortcomings, insider sources have suggested, with ports of webOS running “over twice as fast” on Apple’s iPad 2. While initial reviews – ours included – complained of occasional sluggishness from the TouchPad’s 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon APQ8060 processor, webOS engineers within HP were also supposedly vocal in their complaints about the hardware, The Next Web‘s tipster whispered to them.

HP not ditching webOS, just the hardware

Following earlier reports that HP will be discontinuing its webOS ecosystem of devices, including the Veer, Pre3, and TouchPad, an insider source has informed Thisismynext that the company will not be abandoning the platform entirely. The source revealed details from an all-hands meeting held with HP employees in the webOS Global Business Unit that indicate the platform could still live on through licensing.

Great news for all HP TouchPad owners out there – the webOS-powered tablet is about to be treated to a software update this week. That is, of course, if the rumors that are circulating on the web turn out to be true.
According to the said rumors, the HP TouchPad will be receiving an OTA update to webOS 3.0.2, and the improvements that it is expected to bring are anything but merely superficial. First of all, users will be able to get movies and music straight to their TouchPads via the HP Movie Store and HP Music Store apps that are about to be added.
