3DS Only Selling At Half The Rate Of DS

3DS Only Selling At Half The Rate Of DS

Posted on Jul 18, 2011 by MG1

When you don't have any stellar games for a system, it's not going to do that well in the marketplace. That's the lesson Nintendo is learning with the 3DS.
After weeks of analysts talking about poor sales and an overwhelming lack of interest in the new glasses-free 3D handheld, Nintendo confessed in its own press release that the DS is still outselling the 3DS at a rate of two-to-one, but instead of treating it as a failure for the 3DS, you can probably guess how they spun it.
"The fact is that while the 3DS is a compelling system, its cost and the lack of killer games for it mean that uptake is bound to be on the slow side — compared to the DS, which has a library of megahits stretching bac...

Netflix for Nintendo 3DS now up and running

Netflix for Nintendo 3DS now up and running

Posted on Jul 15, 2011 by MG1

As promised, Nintendo on Thursday morning posted Netflix for 3DS owners. The app (not pictured here) gives the dual-screen game system access to the whole catalog as long as they have a streaming-enabled plan. Bookmarking still works and lets users resume on the 3DS or another device.
Videos on Netflix are currently in 2D. It's not clear if or when Netflix will start adding 3D.
The app itself is free to download from the Nintendo eShop. Streaming under the newly instituted rates stays at $8 for those who only need streaming but costs $16 for those who also want unlimited DVDs.

Netflix streaming comes to the Nintendo 3DS tomorrow

Netflix streaming comes to the Nintendo 3DS tomorrow

Posted on Jul 14, 2011 by MG1

Ever since Nintendo's GDC announcement in March we've been waiting for Netflix streaming on the 3DS, and it appears tomorrow's eShop update will do the trick. This may be too late for those that followed through on threats to cancel after the new rates were announced yesterday, but all other 3DS owners can get their Parks & Rec (in 3D?) anywhere in range of a WiFi signal. Joystiq also points out there's also two Game Boy games coming in tomorrow's update, Game & Watch Gallery and Baseball, just in case you're interested in using your portable game machine to actually play games.

Nintendo 3DS TV service coming to UK July 19th

Posted on Jul 04, 2011 by MG1

It’s already live in Japan, now the console’s TV service could well hit UK shores in a couple of weeks. An invite has just landed in Electricpig’s inbox straight from Nintendo, asking us to pencil in an event on the 19th.
So what can we expect? And how’s it going to impact on your 3DS? Read on for full details.
“We would love you to join us on 19th July 2011 for an exclusive Nintendo 3DS event,” reads the invite from Nintendo. “More will be revealed next week, but trust us when we say you won’t believe your eyes!”
Hmm. We can only think this’ll be the UK unveiling of the 3DS TV service that hit Japan a couple of weeks ago. The Japanese service is giving daily updates for most shows, as well ...

Japanese 3DS to get 3D TV service, North America waits with bated breath

Japanese 3DS to get 3D TV service, North America waits with bated breath

Posted on Jun 21, 2011 by MG1

3DS owners outside of Japan can look forward to missing out on yet another Nintendo sponsored video service -- at least for now. With the help of Fuji TV, Nintendo's Itsu no Ma ni Terebi (or "SpotPass TV") will bring a number of short format 3D TV programs to the fledgling handheld, including shows featuring cute animals, sumo wrestling idol girls, and daily tips on performing magic tricks. Like its Wii predecessor, this video service is currently a Japan-only affair, but there's still plenty of summer left for the big-N to make good on its GDC Netflix promise.

Nintendo 3DS has dented the adoption of 3D on portable devices

Nintendo 3DS has dented the adoption of 3D on portable devices

Posted on Jun 20, 2011 by MG1

The Nintendo 3DS is a failure, at least according to Ian Baverstock, co-founder of gaming consultancy group Tenshi Ventures. And, because the handheld console hasn't offered the greatest of first impressions of glasses-less 3D, he also believes that its legacy could be damaging for future stereoscopic devices.
Speaking at The Futuresource Entertainment Summit in London, Baverstock, who was joined on stage by Andrew Oliver, chief technical officer of Blitz Games Studios, was not unforthcoming with damning remarks for the Nintendo device: "The 3DS has dented the adoption of 3D on portable devices," he said. "A lot of people turn the 3D feature on the 3DS down or off completely. It's fundament....
