By most accounts, the 3DS hasn't quite been the runaway success that Nintendo was banking on. The company attempted to address the lukewarm response with a significant price drop and an accompanying public apology. Now it seems that even more drastic measures may be in the works. French site 01net, which has hit past gaming rumors squarely on the head, is reporting that Nintendo is working on a $10 analog joystick add-on that will snap onto the portable console. That revelation poses all kinds of questions, like how the system will be able to close with the controller in place and whether 3DS users will really take to such a thing.

Whenever there’s a price cut of such a magnitude for a device of such importance as the Nintendo 3DS, one would expect there to be a new device coming out OR for the company selling the device in question to be in some sort of big trouble. What we’re looking at here instead is a price cut before a brand new color combination is released for the casing on this device. This leads us to believe that either Nintendo had always planned to lower the price to this point immediately before the Flame Red color release OR both the color combination and the price point are now in place to make a renewed move for higher sales in the face of a sinking traditional games market.

It looks like the Nintendo 3DS has a case of the HP TouchPad’s fire sale. The company’s price cut of its 3D portable console kicks off in the UK tomorrow with even deeper savings than previously expected. Tesco will offer the console for £115 while Morrison’s will be £120 and £25 for all games. If you still need another choice, GameStop is including free delivery with your 3DS for £135.

Nintendo keep teasing us with the red 3DS, originally included as part of the pre-launch line-up, and then quietly shelved in favor of the black and blue versions. Now the company has announced that the “flame red” 3DS will go on sale September 9, timed alongside the release of Star Fox 64 3D.

The lure of the 3DS grows ever larger. Following the massive price-cut announced last week, Nintendo has now done a deal with public Wi-Fi specialist The Cloud to get gamers free access to the internet whilst they're out and about
And, with the BSkyB owned hotspot provider being Europe's biggest public Wi-Fi network, there's going to be plenty of opportunities for 3DS owners to get their SpotPass on.
SpotPass is the web-powered tool on 3DSs which allows the downloading of software and game data across the airwaves. The free access will also mean web browsing with the 3DS and free visits to the eShop to buy titles for the virtual consoles.

The Nintendo 3DS woes continue, this time with alleged button warping on the handheld's D-pad. Pictures of the console's controls with peeling paint and buttons that looks like prunes have begun to emerge across the Internet.
The problem began as an apparently isolated issue connected with the type of paint used on the 3DS. Photos of a single 3DS owner's device were posted showing warped buttons and paint. A second set of shots have now arrived that show very similar problems.

The Nintendo 3DS is having a tough run as of late. Following last week’s announcement that it would lower the price of the handheld, 3DS sales fell to 16,415 units down from 31,826 units the week before. The four days following the announcement represented the greatest decline. Even more surprising is that on August 11 when the price cut goes into effect, sales of the 3DS are expected to decline further.

Nintendo needs to milk more out of its revenue-generating units -- er, that's us -- in order to reassure anxious investors. Hence Satoru Iwata's mention at a financial Q&A of plans to allow in-game premium DLC on 3DS titles by the end of this year. He said he was wary that the Nintendo brand could be damaged by low-quality DLC, but was nevertheless keen to offer 3DS customers a way to purchase extra levels or features that extend the life of a game. It's about time Nintendo spruced up its online offerings, but we'd rather spend our arcade money on this.

Nintendo's decision to slash the price of its Nintendo 3DS handheld console following disappointing sales will mean that the company will make a loss on each unit sold.

Nintendo posted its first quarterly operating loss ever on Thursday in its fiscal first quarter earnings report. The Japanese gaming company recorded a net loss of 25.5 billion Yen ($328 million), which was on a par with the net loss of 25.2 billion Yen ($324 million) the firm reported during the same quarter last year. Amazon has stopped directly selling the Nintendo 3DS citing customer complaints as the cause of its decision. The portable gaming console currently has 359 reviews and an average of 4/5 stars on Amazon’s website, which suggests customers are happy with the unit itself, but the online retailer has posted a note that states:

Nintendo Video for 3DS ready for US release?

Nintendo's own 3D video portal, known as Nintendo Video, may be set to launch in the US this week, though the company has given conflicting signals. The feature appeared to arrive on the 3DS handheld via the eShop, however the listing turned out to be a "coming soon" reference that is not yet linked to an official download.
"To start watching, download Nintendo Video from the Nintendo eShop today," Nintendo's own website reads, adding to the confusion.
When it arrives the Nintendo Video utility will enable 3DS owners to download and view 3D and 2D videos selected by the company. The content will be available for free via Spotpass, with new listings to be added periodically.
