Verizon retiring the Samsung Fascinate
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungVerizon WirelessFascinate
The Samsung Fascinate has apparently reached End of Life with Verizon, as it has a telling stamp "Retired" on the listing, and has disappeared from the online store.
Verizon's Samsung Galaxy S version that was the Fascinate was one of the best Android handsets you can get on Big Red at the time it hit shelves last year. It had a good run, if we don't count some bugs and the belated Froyo update, plus it is expected to receive Gingerbread as well, but now it has to move over and hail a new king.
Hopefully this Samsung Fascinate retirement only means that the Samsung Galaxy S II version for Verizon is nearing its announcement and launch. We've heard rumors about the handset being called bot...

Verizon leaked MAP memo suggests new high-end Android models coming soon
Like UnlikeFiled in: Verizon Wireless
Verizon has had some MAP memos leak in the past. These notices tell resellers the lowest price that Verizon will allow third party retailers to sell certain handsets for. In return for following the MAP prices, Big Red forks over some marketing money to the retailer. This is done to keep pricing on a product fairly uniform and also to prevent a reseller from "cheapening" a device by offering it at a ridiculously low price. It doesn't apply in all situations, of course, as we all have seen ads for fairly current phones being offered at a huge discount.
Verizon's latest MAP notice gives us info on two high-end devices
The story here actually has nothing to do with pricing. It has to do with t...

Verizon Wireless starts paying the piper - $4.5 billion dividend payment goes to Vodafone
Like UnlikeFiled in: Verizon Wireless
Vodafone is the third largest mobile carrier in the world after China Mobile and Singapore's SingTel, serving about 340 million subscribers around the globe, but the largest one by revenue. It holds a 45% stake in Verizon Wireless, while the rest is owned by Verizon Communications Inc.
Due to the high costs incurred while Verizon was upgrading its 3G and LTE networks in the past few years, Vodafone hadn't been paid for its stake in VZW since 2005, because Big Red was mostly paying off debt for that period.
Investors were getting increasingly wary of the situation, but now they have a reason to pop the champagne bottles. Verizon is finally debt-free, and will pay out part of its profits as di...

Official: Verizon Motorola Xoom owners get 4G LTE upgrade in September
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsMotorolaVerizon WirelessXOOM
The Motorola Xoom, the very first device to run Google’s tablet version of Android known as Honeycomb, hit store shelves on February 24th of this year. When Verizon announced it, they said that at some point in the future, most likely during the summer, customers will be able to get a free hardware upgrade that adds support for 4G LTE. Such an upgrade will require that you send your Xoom in for modification, and it’ll take up to a week to perform the necessary labor. To say Xoom owners have been impatient with regards to finding out when this free upgrade program would begin would be an understatement. The situation didn’t exactly improve when earlier this week Verizon announced that they’d ...

Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesMotorolaVerizon WirelessDROID BIONIC Etna
The DROID Bionic was a hot announcement during CES, and we really couldn’t wait to get our hands on one. However, we didn’t realize that the spec-packed Android handset would take several months to hit the market. We’re now hearing that the DROID Bionic isn’t going to arrive until early September – what gives?
Droid-Life says according to its sources:
We had been hearing 9/1 from a variety of sources over the last two weeks and should have stuck with that date. According to a report received today along with this photo, Motorola reps are telling VZW folks that they should expect the device in “early September.”
Over the past seven months since CES – has that much time passed already? – seve...

In addition to finally blessing the folks in Albany, NY and Tuscon, AZ with a little 4G love, it will also be expanding coverage in in areas including Boston and Salt Lake City. RadioShack dumps T-Mobile, will offer Verizon instead from mid-September

Verizon Wireless products and services have been noticeably absent from RadioShack’s wireless portfolio, but that comes to an end this fall. The nationwide retailer on Tuesday announced an agreement that will finally see it begin to offer devices from the country’s top carrier on September 15th. At the same time, The Shack announced that it will stop selling T-Mobile products and services a day earlier on September 14th. Verizon class action lawsuit to award free minutes
Like UnlikeFiled in: Verizon Wireless
It’s not unusual for large companies to have class action lawsuits brought against them for any number of reasons. Payouts from these settlements, if any, are usually so meager for the users that it’s not worth the time and effort to get involved. I know I’ve opted out of a few cases myself as it simply wasn’t worth my time.
This time around Verizon Wireless is the unlucky recipient, the result of a recent judgment against them stemming from a domestic roaming dispute. The plaintiffs allege that Verizon failed to provide a specific roaming service under the America’s Choice II Calling Plan. According to the settlement, any current or former customer who, since February 21, 2005, subscribed...

Verizon's iPhone 4 activations slow significantly in Q2
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleVerizon WirelessiPhone 4 Verizon
Activations of Apple’s popular iPhone 4 handset slowed significantly at Verizon Wireless last quarter. The nation’s No. 1 carrier reported its second-quarter earnings early Friday morning, at which time it revealed its latest iPhone numbers. Verizon Wireless activated 2.3 million iPhone 4 units in its June quarter for an average of just under 177,000 phones each week. In the first quarter, Verizon Wireless activated 2.2 million iPhones, but the device had been available for just seven weeks in the quarter. During that period, the carrier was activating an average of more than 315,000 devices each week. It stands to reason that iPhone 4 sales would slow following the device’s debut with the c...

Verizon promotes Lowell McAdam to CEO, Ivan Seidenberg stays on as Chairman
Like UnlikeFiled in: Verizon Wireless
Ivan Seidenberg, the man who took the helm as Big Red steered its ship into the iPhone's waters, is stepping down as CEO effective August 1st, the completion of a succession plan that's been underway since last year. His replacement? Current President Lowell McAdam, who helped lead the charge to bring Apple's smartphone to the company's subscribers -- and who proudly stood on stage with Apple's Tim Cook to announce it. Seidenberg will remain Chairman for the time being to help aid in the transition, and while we're not sure for just how long that will be, we wonder if maybe he's not just waiting to pick up a Bionic before heading out.

Verizon Q2 earnings top estimates; CEO will step down
Like UnlikeFiled in: Verizon Wireless
Verizon Communications on Friday reported second-quarter earnings that topped the Street’s estimates, though it failed to match AT&T’s impressive wireless growth during the quarter. Revenue climbed to $27.5 billion in the June quarter, up 2.8% from the same quarter last year. EPS was up 6 cents sequentially to $0.57, a huge swing from the second quarter in 2010 when Verizon reported a loss of $0.42 per share. In wireless, the carrier netted 2.2 million subscribers — or “total connections,” rather — excluding gains made through acquisitions, and service revenues climbed 6.6% year-over-year. Verizon now reports total connections, which include machine to machine devices and other non-standard ...

In short, the arrival of the iPhone 5, or whatever, on the nation's “most reliable network” might be closer than we expect.
