Sony is announcing today at CES a brand new prototype that will revolutionize the LED HDTV industry. The TV uses the same LED technology that’s used in the giant LED screens that are found in stadiums and billboards. The device replaces pixels for LEDs in order to create what Sony is calling the Crystal LED Display. The screen measures 55 inches, diagonally and includes over 6 million miniature LED lights. This technology replaces the old design where several LED lamps were used as a backlight to an LCD panel. The Crystal LED Display is designed create better contrast, color, and a wider viewing angle. The good thing is that all those LEDs will not affect the energy output as Sony announced ...

Sony PlayStation 3 still has 5 more years, says Hirai

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG1

Sony exec Kazuo Hirai has once again said that the PlayStation 3 game console would live out its projected 10-year lifespan, staying on store shelves for another 5 years. However, rumors have been circling that the company has been working on a next-gen console, which could be unveiled at this year’s E3 conference.
Early last year, Hirai was asked a similar question and had reinforced the point that the PlayStation 3 would be here to stay until its end of life. Although not confirmed, it also doesn’t necessarily mean that the company would wait another five years to introduce the PlayStation 4. Recent reports suggest that Sony could do something similar to Nintendo, which plans to release th...

X-Reality Pro by Sony

X-Reality Pro by Sony

This has been consistent with recent technology – resolution from our smaller devices or even YouTube doesn’t render clearly when streamed over our larger televisions. Sony’s new televisions will incorporate their X-Reality Pro software into every one of their future Bravia televisions. It properly pixelates what your video or image should look like in real time.
It essentially restores the proper resolution for a low quality video to help make it look great on a TV with such a high pixel density. You may not gather it from the press shot above, but the television shown is making use of the X-Reality technology from a tiny YouTube video with low resolution.

Aside from the Xperia ion and Xperia S, Sony Ericsson also announced two additional devices, though for the Japanese market – Xperia NX and Xperia acro HD.
The former is basically a local version of the Xperia S, while the latter is a follow-up to the Xperia acro that comes with that awesome 720p Reality Display, as well as Japan-specific features such as infrared port data exchange, mobile wallet and mobile TV.Both the Xperia NX and Xperia acro HD will be available in Japan from this spring. Now you should forget about these two if you live outside of the Land of the rising Sun — Sony will sell them in its own backyard only. That’s not a problem though, since the other two phones (Xperia ion...

Sony BDP-S70 Blu-ray player upscales to 4k resolution, supports Skype webcams

Sony BDP-S70 Blu-ray player upscales to 4k resolution, supports Skype webcams

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG1

Sony just announced its 2012 line of smart Blu-ray players at CES, and the highlight is the BDP-S790, which can upscale "any content" to 4K. We're don't know exactly how that'll look, but we're guessing it'll be a lot like scaling DVD to 1080p — so probably just good enough to hold you over until true 4K content becomes more readily available. The S70 also features built-in Wi-Fi with the usual Netflix, Pandora, and Hulu support, but you can also connect an optional camera and use Skype, and Sony's new Socialize app lets you share to Facebook and Twitter. No pricing yet, but Sony says it'll be out this April.

Sony displays VAIO tablet prototypes; future Windows 8 hardware?

Sony displays VAIO tablet prototypes; future Windows 8 hardware?

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG2

If you blinked while watching our Sony live blog, you likely missed Kazuo Hirai teasing of a few prototype VAIO laptop and tablets. Well, luckily, Sony's displaying them behind glass at its booth. To me, the most interesting of the two is the tablet that slides over a detachable keyboard. It's a lot like the Series 7 Slider Samsung showed last year (it never came to market), but the tablet separates from the base and also has a stylus. There's a short video of it behind glass below, but if I had to guess this really seems like a perfect fit for Windows 8. (VAIO is Sony's Windows-only brand, its tablet is part of its mobile group.) That said, I ran into a Sony executive at the booth, who said...

Sony Xperia S has PlayStation certification and 720p display, available this quarter

Sony Xperia S has PlayStation certification and 720p display, available this quarter

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG1

One of Sony's inaugural batch of Sony-branded phones, the Xperia S is the device that had been rumored over the last few weeks as the Nozomi with a 4.3-inch 720p display. Today it's been officially announced, and the specs are designed to impress: besides the gap-free laminated Reality Display, the Xperia S features a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, a 12-megapixel Exmor R camera sensor, NFC support, PlayStation certification, and a unique "transparent element" along the bottom that offsets the solid black face. On paper, the phone is quite similar to AT&T's Xperia Ion — also announced today — but it lacks the Ion's LTE support (a sign of its European focus) and uses a slightly smaller display.

Sony announced three new series of HDTVs for 2012

Posted on Jan 10, 2012 by MG3

No one is more pleased than us that Sony has finally seen the light and somehow found a way to condense last year's lineup of 27 TVs to only ten new models for 2012, all due in Q1 2012. All of which fit into either the BX, EX or HX line. We'll start at the top with HX. It is broken up into the HX850 or HX750, both available in 46 or 55-inches. All the HX models are Skype ready (optional CMU-BR100 camera and microphone) include Track ID, have built-in WiFi and provide access to the Sony Entertainment Network (SEN) as well as apps like Netflix and Hulu Plus.

A whole new slate of audio electronics from Sony in 2012

Sony didn't hold back its engineers this year when it came to iterating on its extensive lineup of audio products for 2012. The new STR-DH820 AV receiver features five HDMI inputs that'll pass 3D and an integrated iPhone/iPod dock. There are three new Blu-ray enabled home theater systems, the BDV-N890W is leading the way with built-in 802.11N, wireless rear speakers and an iOS app for audio control wherever you put the included HomeShare wireless speaker.
