Upcoming Olympus president wants to cut back camera portfolio

Hiroyuki Sasa was named as the potential new president of Olympus back in February, but already seems to have a strategy in place for getting the camera manufacturer back to profitability. Speaking to Japan Times, Sasa confirmed that Fuji and Sony have expressed interest in a financial partnership with Olympus, but he hasn’t ruled out weathering the financial storm alone.

A spokesperson from Olympus has said that pre-orders for its E-M5, the first in the Olympus OM-D line are the highest they've ever had, for a camera of its kind.
Speaking to TechRadar, Mark Thackara, Olympus UK marketing manager said, "Pre-orders are the highest we've ever had, it's a lot higher than the [PEN] E-P1, and even the biggest pre-order level for many years, which I think shows how people are responding to the camera."
Olympus introduced the OM-D during the Japanese photography trade show, CP+. It features a retro design and inbuilt electronic viewfinder.

Olympus has announced that following several weeks of deliberation it has been decided that its entire board of directors will resign at the end of an extraordinary general shareholders meeting scheduled for 20th April 2012.

The company has also released the names of the candidates that are planned to take-up the vacated positions.

Hiroyuki Sasa, the current executive officer is set to be the company's new president. Meanwhile the position of chairman will be taken by Yasuyuki Kimoto - the former senior managing director and executive officer of Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation and current president and CEO of The Japan Research Institute Ltd.

Beleaguered Japanese camera and medical instrument maker Olympus is forecasting a ¥32 billion (about $412 million) yearly loss for fiscal 2011, citing the Thai floods and unfavorable exchange rates. While the forecast for yearly operating profits from its medical equipment arm slipped from ¥8.5 billion to ¥6.5 billion, its imaging business actually improved — although remaining unprofitable — going from a ¥15 billion loss in 2010 to a forecasted ¥9 billion loss for the 2011 (year ending March 2012).

Japanese camera manufacturer Olympus has just introduced the successor to its SZ-30MR compact shooter. The new snapper not only sees a minimal increment on its stage name, SZ-31MR, but it also keeps the same 16-megapixel backlit sensor as its predecessor, as well as an identical 24x (25-600mm) optical zoom. Though, the newcomer does get a fresh image processor, making the jump from a TruePic III to a TruePic V, thus bringing along better low-light performance, scene enhancements and keeping high-quality shots while using the zoom feature. Olympus has updated its rugged offerings with the TG-820 iHS. It's based on a 12MP back-lit CMOS sensor, which allows it to keep up with the recent trend of Full HD-capable underwater cameras. The back-lit sensor has prompted the company to apply its 'iHS' branding, indicating 'Intelligent High-Sensitivity and High Speed' capabilities.

Olympus has finally announced the long-rumored E-M5, the first of its OM-D range of Micro Four Thirds cameras. The E-M5 is built around a 16MP sensor and features the company's latest 5-axis image stabilization system that works for both stills and movies. It can shoot 1080i60 movies in MOV format (h.264 compression) and includes a 1.44M dot EVF in its weather-sealed magnesium alloy body.

Olympus has launched the SZ-31MR iHS, a 24x superzoom featuring the company's iHS intelligent high-sensitivity / high-speed technology. This stems from its use of a 16MP back-lit CMOS sensor that allows high-speed capture and 1080p Full HD video capture. The camera features a 25-600mm equivalent zoom lens and twin TruePic V processors and a high-res 920k dot touchscreen.

A Samsung source has said that the company is open to the possibility of an alliance with rival manufacturer Olympus.
Although Samsung has previously declared it isn't interesting in buying up the Olympus camera business, it is considering a partnership with the company in other areas.
Olympus is currently considering an equity tie-up with five candidate companies which include Sony and Panasonic, according to the Asahi Shimbun newspaper.

The all-metal, 16-megapixel Olympus VR-340 and VR-360 come equipped with 24-240mm and 24-300mm equivalent lenses, respectively. Both are slim, compact cameras with a small right-hand grip, sensor-shift image stabilisation, 720p HD movie recording capability, Magic Filters, Eye-Fi memory card support and a 3” rear screen with 460,000 dots. Both VR cameras will be available in March 2012. The Olympus VR-360 costs €149, while the VR-340 will sell for €129 / £129.99.

Remember that super crazy Olympus accounting scandal we told you about a couple of weeks back? Yeah, well, it just got super crazier. The camera maker is suing its own president, Shuichi Takayama and 18 other past and present executives over the dealie, in which it worked to conceal $1.7 billion in loses. The company filed in a Japanese court yesterday. On top of that, current board members have agreed to resign, moving aside for investors to vote on new management for the company.
