Olympus has spoken out about the new Nikon 1 system, introduced last week as a rival to existing compact system cameras such as the PEN range of micro four thirds cameras.
In an exclusive interview with TechRadar, Mark Thackara, national marketing manager, consumer products for Olympus UK spoke to us about market reaction to the new cameras.
The Olympus PEN was one of the first compact system cameras to come to market, sharing the same micro four thirds system as the Panasonic G1 which was announced a few months previously.
Since the launch of the first PEN back in 2009, the E-P1, several different versions of the PEN range have been launched, with the current line-up including the PEN E-P3,...

Olympus PEN E-PM1 Mini gets a $500 price tag, September release date

Posted on Aug 26, 2011 by MG15

Remember that cute little Micro Four Thirds camera that Olympus unveiled in June? Well, we just got word that the PEN E-PM1 Mini will ship next month, with an equally petite $500 price tag -- including a 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens. The company is positioning the 12.3 megapixel camera as an upgrade for point-and-shoot users, as "the easiest PEN to use," thanks to a new, simpler user interface and 23 Scene-Select modes. Still, the E-PM1 is a very capable interchangeable lens camera (ILC), and includes a 3-inch 460k-dot LCD, 1080i HD video capture, RAW shooting and a maximum sensitivity of ISO 12,800, along with Manual, Aperture Priority, and Shutter Priority shooting modes. The Mini will be av...

Adobe Lightroom 3.5 will support Olympus, Panasonic and Sony RAW formats

Adobe Lightroom 3.5 will support Olympus, Panasonic and Sony RAW formats

Posted on Aug 25, 2011 by MG15

Possessing a camera with RAW output is great, but working with those data-rich files often isn't -- not least because most manufacturers use proprietary file formats. However, Lightroom fans who update to version 3.5 (currently at release candidate stage) should discover that it effortlessly handles RAW images from a bunch of recent cameras including the Olympus E-P3 and E-PL3, Panasonic G3 and GF3, and the Sony Alpha NEX-C3 The update will also fix a number of bugs, such as inconsistent processing times and a loss of geo-tagging metadata when converting to Adobe's Digital Negative format. Time to get those psychedelic HDR images flowing.

Olympus unleashes trio of interchangeable lens cameras - PEN E-P3, E-PL3 and E-PM1

Posted on Jun 30, 2011 by MG1

Olympus has officially announced not one, not two, but three new interchangeable lens cameras; the PEN E-P3, PEN E-PL3 and the PEN E-PM1.
The launch includes a whopper of an update for its cutting edge mirrorless PEN range in the form of the E-P3. This camera boasts a revamped set of specs, particularly in the movie and AF department.
According to Olympus, the E-P3 is the fastest auto focusing interchangeable lens camera currently on the market. This is due to a clever 35 area multiple AF system, which uses image contrast detection to snap the focus as quick as possible.
The 35 focus points also put the camera on a par with some of the more expensive top end DSLR offerings, allowing highly.....

Olympus E-P3 strikes back with ultra-fast AF, touchscreen

Posted on Jun 30, 2011 by MG1

Olympus early Thursday remade its entire PEN camera line and headlined it with the E-P3. The camera uses a genuinely new 12.3-megapixel CMOS sensor and the first dual-core TruePic VI processor to reach much faster autofocus performance than not just other Micro Four Thirds cameras but most interchangeable lens cameras. It can supposedly outperform its higher-end rival, the Panasonic GH2, as well as full-fledged DSLRs like the Nikon D3100 and even the Canon EOS 1D Mark IV.
The updated combination also leads to a much more precise autofocusing system with 35 actual points, 11 of which are selectable, where the E-P2 was limited to 11 real points. Photographers can now use full-time autofocus th...
