Windows 8 Will Remember Your Settings Across PCs

Posted on Oct 03, 2011 by MG3

Microsoft is heavily pitching Windows 8 to be its most user-centric effort yet. One such feature is the ability to sync settings between different computers, so that users can have a similar and more seamless experience moving from one machine to the next.
This means that a Windows 8 user, if he or she chooses, can share settings and personalization between home and work or school computers, or perhaps even between multiple machines within the same home.

Microsoft to make $444 million annually from Android royalties, Goldman estimates

Posted on Sep 30, 2011 by MG1

Microsoft mobile revenue continues to grow, though for the time being it seems as though the bulk of it is coming from Android. Goldman Sachs analysts on Thursday estimated that the software company will pull in approximately $444 million in fiscal 2012 from licensing deals made with various Android vendors such as HTC and Samsung, based on royalties of $3-$6 per Android device sold. Asymco’s Horace Dediu estimated in August that Microsoft took in approximately $21 million in revenue from Windows Phone licenses in the second quarter, and he believes the company earned roughly $60 million from Android royalties over the same period from HTC alone. With Samsung now paying Microsoft royalties a...

Microsoft to drop Zune Music Pass to $10 per month on October 3rd

Posted on Sep 30, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Microsoft

Microsoft will lower its Zune Music Pass from $14.99 per month to $9.99 per month beginning on October 3rd alongside the service’s launch in Canada. The service will now be priced in line with Spotify and similar services. Microsoft’s Zune Marketplace is home to 14 million songs and a Zune Music Pass subscription provides unlimited streaming access to the music. Unlike other services, Zune Music Pass allows subscribers to keep 10 songs per month. Microsoft’s move is no doubt an effort to attract customers who might otherwise but attempted to join a number of competing music subscription options including Spotify, Rdio, Rhapsody and even Apple’s upcoming iCloud service. Zune Music Pass subscr...

Microsoft disables 41,000-strong Kelihos botnet

Posted on Sep 28, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Microsoft

Microsoft added another notch to its belt today following the demise of a 41,000-strong botnet. Called Kelihos or Waledac 2.0, the zombie network was capable of sending 3.8 billion spam emails per day. While it isn't the biggest fish Microsoft has fried, this marks the first time it has named a defendant in a botnet case. One alleged operator has been personally notified of the actions against him as of 8:15AM Central Europe time on Monday.
In its Virginia federal court filing, Microsoft alleges that Dominique Alexander Piatti of the Czech Republic used the free domain service dotFREE Group to operate and control Kelihos -- namely with "cz.cc" domains. In addition to hosting Kelihos, cz.cc d...

4.3-inch ZTE Tania unveiled, ZTE’s first Windows Phone Mango handset

Posted on Sep 26, 2011 by MG3

The ZTE Tania (codename) is the first Windows Phone Mango handset by Chinese phone maker ZTE and it’s definitely got some looks, but does it match it with potent hardware? The ZTE Tania, unveiled at China International Communications Exhibition 2011, lies just around the mid-range of WP devices, so it doesn’t go into dual-core territory, but it’s still got some decent-looking specs.

Verizon Mango update also coming on the 27th September

Posted on Sep 26, 2011 by MG3

We believe AT&T will roll out the Windows Phone 7.5 Mango update on the 27th, and now Verizon customer support appears to suggest the CDMA carrier will be launching the software update on the same day also.
Of course customer service reps are not always the most knowledgeable and accurate in the world, but the 27th seems as likely a day as any to bring all those HTC Trophies up to date.

Microsoft launches Bing Deals website

Microsoft launches Bing Deals website

Posted on Sep 26, 2011 by MG3

Filed in: Microsoft

Microsoft announced and launched a new deals website on Friday tied to its growing Bing suite of services. Bing Deals is a shopping site that compiles specials from GroupOn, Target, LivingSocial, Nordstrom and others. “Instead of building another program, we’re harnessing deals from major providers and retailers,” said Bing senior director Lisa Gurry. Microsoft’s Bing Deals offers more than 200,000 specials across the United States and, as a deal aggregator, it should eliminate the need to sign up for email alerts from multiple coupon-based services.

Windows 8 secure boot spurs OS lock fears, Microsoft answers

Windows 8 secure boot spurs OS lock fears, Microsoft answers

Posted on Sep 26, 2011 by MG1

Microsoft's Tony Mangefeste in a response to early adopters tried to calm down fears that Windows 8 might be used to shut out Linux or competing operating systems. After Red Hat engineer Matt Garrett worried that the UEFI firmware's secure boot feature could be used to exclude non-official operating systems, Sinofsky stepped in to clarify that it was part of the spec and not Microsoft's policy. The code is also an optional policy that, even when active, could still let someone install another OS without a flag preventing the new OS from running.
PC builders can both set which party has control over the security certificates used to greenlight an OS as well as letting customers load certifica...

While we know Android is riddled like Swiss cheese with security exploits, Windows Phone 7, except for the jailbreaking scene, has been left more or less alone.
At Deepsec in Vienna security researchers will be discussing methods to attack OS security in Windows Phone 7 by exploiting the special privileges OEM applications have.

The FBI arrested a suspected member of the hacking group LulzSec yesterday for allegedly taking part in an extensive security breach involving Sony Pictures Entertainment. The hacker, 23-year-old Cody Kretsinger, is charged with conspiracy and the unauthorized impairment of a protected computer in connection with the attacks on the film studio in May and June.
The nine-page indictment, unsealed yesterday, accuses Kretsinger and other conspirators of obtaining confidential information from Sony computers using a SQL injection attack against its website. It is common for hackers to use this type of attack to gain access to servers and steal information by exploiting vulnerabilities in its defe...

Verizon expects Windows Phone to overtake BlackBerry

Verizon expects Windows Phone to overtake BlackBerry

Posted on Sep 26, 2011 by MG1

Despite the poor sales of Microsoft’s Windows Phone devices, Verizon seems to have more confidence in the platform than RIM’s BlackBerry. During the Goldman Sachs Communacopia conference, Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam expressed his opinion on which platform would emerge as the third major mobile operating system and he believed that Windows Phone would overtake BlackBerry.
McAdam echoed the sentiment of other carriers, which feel that the mobile space will ultimately boil down to three major platforms. At the beginning of this year, the top mobile ecosystems were Apple’s iOS, Google’s Android, Nokia’s Symbian, RIM’s BlackBerry, and HP’s WebOS. At present, Nokia has abandoned Symbian for Windows ...
