HTC getting flack from Wall Street over their purchase of S3 Graphics
Like UnlikeFiled in: HTC
Earlier this week we reported on HTC’s $300 million acquisition of S3 Graphics and admitted absolute defeat when it came to conjuring up a theory as to what the smartphone maker was going to do with S3′s expertise in the PC graphics space. Turns out that the acquisition was purely over patents. Winston Yung, Chief Financial Officer at HTC, says that he expects the company to recoup their investment over the next 2 to 3 years by using S3′s patents both defensively, which we’ll assume means negotiating lower royalty rates by signing cross licensing agreements, and aggressively, lawyer code for suing your patent infringing ass. This has upset Wall Street, with Citigroup wondering if such a deal...

HTC HD2 Mango ROM now with working Marketplace and Side Loading available
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTCHD2
That did not take long. If you (understandably) held of upgrading your HTC HD2 to Mango due to the inability to install applications you will be glad to hear XDA-Dev member elfinlazz has corrected those particular issues, enabling side loading and including a working Marketplace fixer.
Early reports are also of issues with storage, Wi-Fi and Skydrive having been corrected.
Of course the 7592 build is earlier than the 7661 build currently available to developers, but then we have been told even this build is months old in any case.

First OTA update hits non-carrier branded HTC Sensation units in Europe
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTCSensation 4G
Needless to say, there are some happy HTC Sensation owners in Europe that are exuberant about the handset's loveliness, but for those affected by the stifling problem of lag with its performance, they’re going to be glad to see hear that some owners are seeing better results after installing a new software update.
Although it doesn’t necessarily bring along anything dramatic, this 27MB over-the-air update for non-carrier branded HTC Sensation units in Europe is being pushed out as we speak. Naturally, it brings the handset up to software version 1.35.401.1 and carries along some additional bug fixes with it. Moreover, we’re sure that handset owners are more interested about seeing an unlock...

Best Buy now offers Wi-Fi only HTC Flyer with stylus for $499.99
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksHTCFlyer
Looking to grab yourself the HTC Flyer but don’t want a carrier (Sprint) contract? There’s the Wi-Fi only version which up until this point was available for $499.99 via Best Buy. There was one caveat though – that money didn’t get you the stylus, which the electronics retailer sold separately for $79.99. In total you had to pour out $580 for the combined package. That’s a lot of money and although we love Flyer, we’re not sure pretty confident it’s not worth it. Heck even $500 is a lot of money, but then again there still isn’t that many options in the 7-inch tablet market. Hopefully that will change soon, but in the meantime – those of you with the cash and urgent need to spend it can proc...

HTC purchases S3 Graphics from VIA, investment group for $300 million
Like UnlikeFiled in: HTCVIA
Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer HTC has made a move to purchase S3 Graphics from parent company VIA and an investment firm. S3 Graphics develops graphics visualization technologies that are used in PCs, video game consoles, and mobile devices.
S3 recently made the news in a patent lawsuit against Apple that ended with the court ruling in S3 Graphics' favor on two counts. The $300 million that HTC is spending on S3 Graphics buys it the entire company, with its experienced team of developers, along with a suite of patents and intellectual property relating to graphics development.

HTC Marvel Hits FCC, Heading For T-Mobile
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTCT-MobileWildfire S T-Mobile
Back in May, a leaked T-Mobile roadmap revealed a wide variety of delicious smartphones waiting to come out of the oven. One of the handsets getting close to making its entry is the HTC Marvel that’s slated for a July 15th launch. The handset has just passed through the FCC, indicating it should be right on time.
The HTC Marvel is essentially the T-Mobile version of the HTC Wildfire S for which we did a full review back in April. The FCC documents label the handset as only PG76240 and indicate that the device will sport T-Mobile’s GSM and WCDMA bands.

HTC Status and LG Thrill 4G To Hit AT&T This Month?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesLGHTCAT&TThrill 4GStatus
Sometime in the last year or so, the carriers picked up a bad new habit. They’d announce that they were getting a phone, talk all about the specs… but then give no indication of when it might actually be available. Maybe it’s because they don’t like making promises they’re not sure they can keep; maybe it’s because they’re hoping that a second announcement — the one containing the pricing/availability details — will stir up a second whirlwind of press. Whatever the motivation, it’s terribly annoying.
Take the Status and the glasses-free 3D LG Thrill for example. The Status just went official last week. The Thrill 4G, however, went official way back in March — and yet, there’s still no offici...

HTC Sensation 4G heads to Canada, available for $150 on Bell
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTCSensation 4G
Do our friends across the border have a hankerin' for a top-of-the-line Android phone? Consider your desires addressed. Not only is Bell coming out with the Samsung Galaxy S II in the near future, the HTC Sensation 4G is now officially in stock for $150 on a three-year commitment. The "4G" moniker remains since the device is compatible with Bell's 14.4 Mbps HSPA+ network. Aside from this, however, we can expect the same goodies seen in the US version: a 1.2GHz dual-core CPU, Gingerbread, 4.3-inch qHD display with 960 x 540 resolution, and an 8 megapixel camera (just to name a few). This does unfortunately mean that you'll now have two very capable "superphones" to choose from -- although the...

HTC breaks yet another record, sales up 88% year on year in June 2011
Like UnlikeFiled in: HTC
When HTC made the decision to support Android and put Microsoft’s Windows Mobile on the sideline, no one knew how things would turn out. Less than 3 years later, after shipping the first Android device, the T-Mobile G1, the Taiwanese handset maker is now making money hand over fist and they’ve just announced that sales for June 2011 are 88% higher than they were in the same month last year. This bit of news bumped up their stock price a smidgen, which, oddly enough, has dropped 19% since the beginning of June. Many financial analysts thought that HTC would stop growing at their current pace and that their June results would be flat year on year. Looks like they’ve been proven wrong, but ther...

HTC sees record revenue in June
Like UnlikeFiled in: HTC
HTC continued on its warpath toward becoming the No. 4 smartphone vendor in the world last month as the company recorded record revenue of NT$45 billion ($1.55 billion USD) in June. This marks the third straight month that the Taiwan-based mobile giant saw revenue hit a new high, and it was up 10.9% over May. HTC’s second-quarter revenue totalled NT$124.3 billion ($4.2 billion USD), topping the company’s earlier projection of NT$120 billion, and growing 19.43% over the first quarter of 2011. HTC has not yet reported its full earnings for the month of June, but analysts estimate that the company shipped 11.6 million smartphones in the second quarter, bringing first-half shipment totals to rou...

HTC to displace RIM as No. 4 smartphone vendor
Like UnlikeFiled in: HTCRIM BlackBerry
HTC is set to slide into the No. 4 spot on the list of the world’s top smartphone vendors next year according to Taiwan-based research firm Market Intelligence Center. The slot is currently held by BlackBerry maker Research In Motion. Headquartered outside Taiwan’s capital, HTC has quietly built a smartphone empire as well as one of the highest market caps of any tech company on the Taiwan exchange. HTC builds some of the most popular Android smartphones in the world, and the company reported profits of NT$14.83 billion in the first quarter of 2011 — triple the profit it recorded in the same quarter one year prior. HTC also shipped 9.7 million smartphones in the first quarter, which represen...

EVO 3D at the FCC redux: now with AWS 3G
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTCEVO 3D
Well, what have we here? Another HTC EVO 3D, aka the PG86300, has landed on the FCC's doorstep -- only this time it's packing radios similar to those seen in the phone's European edition. This one works on the 1700MHz AWS band, so it appears could be destined for duty in the pockets of T-Mobile's magenta-clad masses, though we can't say for sure. However, now that the government's decreed this EVO's electronics won't fry our brains, it shouldn't be be long before we find out.
Update: This FCC filing is most likely for the European EVO 3G, which, like the European Sensation and Flyer, features a tri-band 3G (HSPA+) radio with 2100 / 1700 (AWS) and 900MHz as well as a quadband 2G radio. This m...

Skype 2 video chat unofficially enabled on the Galaxy S II, Sensation, and others
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungHTCGalaxy S IISensation 4G
The latest Skype update for Android is available to everyone, but it only enables video chat on four specific handsets. Fortunately, impatient modders have gone some way to correcting this profound injustice, by creating APKs that activate video calling on other handsets too. So far we've heard of successful ports on the Samsung Galaxy S II and the HTC Sensation, Thunderbolt and EVO 4G. If you've got some other handset with Android 2.3, a little experimentation with the APK might also be worth your while. However, we just tried it on an Xperia Arc and didn't get very far: the app ran, but efforts to communicate with an Xperia Neo resulted in one-way video, a locked landscape mode and plenty ...

HTC Desire Android 2.3 update enters testing phase
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsHTCGoogleDesireAndroid 2.3
HTC has announced that its long-awaited Gingerbread update for the HTC Desire has entered internal testing.
The update will provide the HTC Desire with a slightly stripped-down version of the software, with some apps having to be abandoned to free up memory required by the Gingerbread update.
It's been a rollercoaster ride for Desire owners; HTC had originally promised the update, then decided it couldn't deliver it and then changed its mind again a day later, saying that it would be bringing the update out after all.
Gingerbone of contention
The latest update from the company reads: "Hi all - We're excited to share that we are testing our build of Gingerbread for HTC Desire and will start d...
