Google Voice enters internal testing across Europe, international launch on the horizon?

Lather up your vocal cords, Europe, because it looks like Google Voice is on its way over. That's according to the company's European Director of Business Development, Jens Redmer, who told The Next Web yesterday that Google is taking "concrete action" to expand the service to the Old World. Redmer later confirmed that he's currently conducting internal tests with Voice, adding that its voicemail transcription feature has performed particularly well within Europe. He stopped short, however, of offering a precise launch date, saying only that the service's release would hinge upon legal and regulatory issues, rather than any technical obstacles. Now that the train has rolled into the testing ...

In the ongoing lawsuit between Oracle and Google related to Android patent and copyright infringements, Magistrate Judge Paul Grewal last month ordered the CEO’s of both the companies to attend the settlement conference yesterday. As ordered, Larry Page from Google and Larry Ellison from Oracle had a long discussion yesterday in court and it seems they have not yet solved the disputes. So they will meet again tomorrow to continue their settlement talks. According to industry analysts, Oracle is in driver’s seat in this case and they may obtain billions from Google for the past infringements along with per device royalty for the future products. If it happens, it may be a huge blow for Googl...

Android Ice Cream Sandwich nears release: phones will be able to install Honeycomb apps

Android Ice Cream Sandwich nears release: phones will be able to install Honeycomb apps

Posted on Sep 21, 2011 by MG1

Android Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) is the upcoming major redefinition of Google’s mobile platform and while we don’t know what it will look like, we already know that ICS will run on all kinds of screen sizes - from small to large and covering everything in between. Thanks to a post on Android Developers, we also have a pretty good idea of how apps will behave in ICS with the biggest change coming to Honeycomb apps which devs are adviced to make compatible with smaller screen sizes in a single APK.
Basically, this puts an end to the confusion whether an app would or wouldn’t work on a handset. Since ICS is compatible with both phones and tablets, a developer having a Honeycomb-only app would h...

Samsung Nexus S 4G updated to Android 2.3.7, brings Google Wallet support

Posted on Sep 20, 2011 by MG1

It looks like the rumors are true, folks -- the long-awaited update that brings Google Wallet to the Samsung Nexus S 4G on Sprint is indeed here, just two days shy of missing the "summer" deadline completely. We're pretty scant on details at the moment, but the announcement has shown up on an official FAQ page on Samsung's site informing us that build GWK74 is available. If you're a proud owner of the now fully-functional device, you should receive a notification stating that an update is available to deliver the goods via an OTA refresh. We're not sure how long it will take for this to get pushed out to everyone, so a bit of patience may need to be exercised here as you wait. Let us know if...

HTC rumored to work on Android devices with Intel chips inside

HTC rumored to work on Android devices with Intel chips inside

Posted on Sep 20, 2011 by MG1

Just as there will be Windows 8 tablets with NVIDIA, Qualcomm and Texas Instruments ARM-based chips, so goes the other way around - we will see Android devices, powered by Intel silicon.
In fact, rumors suggest that Intel employees have been walking the floors at IDF 2012 with HTC-made devices in hand running Android, but powered by an Intel chipset, which will be previewed around CES or MWC time early 2012.
Google's Andy Rubin announced a strategic move the other day to support Intel's x86 architecture in the next versions of Android, and the announcement was scheduled for the same day when Microsoft introduced Windows 8 running on ARMed tablets.
Now what is HTC doing sniffing around and ...

Telstra won't be Gingerbreading the HTC Desire after all

Telstra won't be Gingerbreading the HTC Desire after all

Posted on Sep 20, 2011 by MG1

If you're on Australia's Telstra network and you're still clinging to hope of an OTA Gingerbread update for your beloved HTC Desire, then now it's officially time to let go. For a while it looked like Telstra might opt for a smart workaround to the old handset's lack of memory, but now the operator's update page makes it clear that it has fallen in line with the wider HTC stance: Android 2.3 just isn't viable on this device, unless you're prepared to go off-piste with the developer build or an unofficial ROM.

Google Nexus S 4G getting update for Google Wallet compatibility

Google Nexus S 4G getting update for Google Wallet compatibility

Posted on Sep 20, 2011 by MG1

The time has come, Samsung and Google have finally made the update for the Nexus S 4G smartphone that enables Google Wallet compatibility available.
According to Samsung's support site for the Nexus S 4G, the GWK74 build for the phone adds the necessary parts to make Google Wallet work. The update is installed over-the-air, so owners should be seeing a notification on their phones when it is ready to be downloaded and installed.
Of course, this could be a mistake, and it could take even longer for the update, and Google Wallet, to arrive. Google did promise that it would show up this summer, so technically it has two days left to get this update out to users.

Google prepping devs for impending Ice Cream Sandwich update

Posted on Sep 20, 2011 by MG1

With the Ice Cream Sandwich likely just weeks away, Google is getting Android developers ready for the impending update with some tips on how to optimize applications for phones and tablets alike for the next version of the mobile operating system.
Google introduced the Fragment API in Honeycomb and we’ve been expecting them to be implemented into handsets at some point in the future. The latest post on the Android Developers blog shows how a developer can optimize a Honeycomb application to run on a phone and how fragments are treated differently between the two. The post also shows how one can keep their application for tablets only.
While Honeycomb is strictly for tablets only, Ice Cream ...

Google: Offline support making apps better online

Google: Offline support making apps better online

Posted on Sep 16, 2011 by MG1

Introducing offline capability is improving Google applications' online functionality, according to Chrome Web Store senior product manager Rahul Roy-Chowdhury.
One of the key complaints about the Chrome OS has been that usage of the cloud-centric operating system is hamstrung when an internet connection is missing.
Therefore, apps that can be used even when offline are key additions for Chrome, and Roy-Chowdhury told TechRadar that the process of adding this kind of functionality is also having a positive affect on the applications overall.
Better overall
"Interestingly, although offline is very nice in and of itself – in that it allows use when not connected, having offline support is maki...

Samsung Infuse 4G gets minor software update, no Gingerbread to be found

Samsung Infuse 4G gets minor software update, no Gingerbread to be found

Posted on Sep 16, 2011 by MG1

AT&T is pushing a minor software update out to the Samsung Infuse 4G, though its not the one that users have been waiting for. Instead of upgrading the phone to Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and hopefully a newer version of Samsung's TouchWiz interface, the update seems to just be a maintenance fix, and its difficult to tell what it actually offers. It could very well be an update to prepare the Infuse 4G for its promised Gingerbread upgrade, which is expected to arrive this fall. The update weighs in at about 14.5MB, and users can go to the About Phone section of the Settings app to download and install it.

Google Search Slips an Inch, Still Miles Ahead of Bing

Google is the big man on campus when it comes to search and it's said the bigger they are, the harder they fall. Unfortunately for Microsoft, Yahoo, and everyone else trying to carve a larger slice of the search pie, a little slip by Google here and there doesn't add up to anything close to a fall. Does it really matter that Google is the only search player out of the top three to give up a bit of market share?
In the short term, the answer is no, and at this pace, Google has plenty of time before it has to worry about long term results. Here's what happened in August. According to comScore, Google's share of the search market slipped to 64.8 percent, a 0.3 percent drop from July. Meanwhile,...
