Google Currents gets its first update

Google Currents gets its first update

It may not be the biggest update, but for those who have found a lot to love with Google Currents, the new update should make your experience even nicer with various stability fixes and a big fix for refreshing content. Google Currents has only been in existence for about two weeks, but it has been a product on Google's radar for much longer. The product started life as a threat. Google attempted to purchase Flipboard, and when the company refused the offer, Google said if the company didn't sell, it would build its own competitor. That competitor was codenamed Propeller and launched as Google Currents.
It's definitely a solid app, but as with all apps, it came with some bugs and troubles. ...

Firefox for Android redesigned for Honeycomb tablets

Firefox for Android redesigned for Honeycomb tablets

Posted on Dec 22, 2011 by MG1

Firefox for Android has been updated to version 9.0 which brings a number of improvements to the browser, not least of which is a redesign for Honeycomb Android tablets. The increased speed of updates with Firefox has led to some less than impressive version jumps on the desktop version, but this update for mobile looks like it's worth the version number jump.
As always, Firefox for Android has been working hard to make startup faster, so that's the first on the list of improvements in this update. Another really cool feature is that websites will now be able to access your mobile device's camera, which could lead to some pretty interesting options. But, the big change this time around is a...

Mozilla has announced the arrival of its latest version of Firefox 9, which is optimised for Android tablets.
It's been a good week for Mozilla with the non-profit browser creator renewing its search deal with Google and cementing its future, which means that it can now focus on the bread and butter of its business and get new versions of its browser out.
The Android version of Firefox 9 has a number of new features. These include a new action bar, a veritable banquet of button shortcuts and browser load times have been made that little bit quicker. There's also more HTML5 love than ever before.

App Store generates 6 times more profit than Android Market

App Store generates 6 times more profit than Android Market

Posted on Dec 21, 2011 by MG15

We all knew the App Store was the most profitable app catalog out there, but recent findings from Distimo show just how shockingly more cash it yields for developers. The top 200 apps in the App Store generate 6 times the profits of those in the Android Market. This makes it obvious why most programmers focus on iOS first and Android is usually only second-best.

The stats were all published by Distimo reporting about the January to November state of the application markets. Other interesting findings include the fact that Microsoft’s Windows Marketplace has outgrown the Nokia Ovi Store and the RIM BlackBerry App Worlds.

Nexus S Ice Cream Sandwich update halted as battery issues abound

Posted on Dec 21, 2011 by MG15

Google has halted the rollout of the Android 4.0 update for the Nexus S, as users started to report problems with the mobile phone's battery.

The report comes from the Google Mobile Help forum in which a statement has been posted by Google community manager Paul Wilcox, stating that:

"If you received an update notification a little while ago but the update isn't currently available for your phone, this is likely the result of Google pausing the update in your area while we monitor feedback."

Mozilla and Google agree to new Firefox search deal for three years

Mozilla and Google agree to new Firefox search deal for three years

Posted on Dec 21, 2011 by MG15

Filed in: Google

The panic's over, people, Firefox will continue to have Google as its trusty default search engine. Mozilla has just revealed that it has come to a "mutually beneficial" revenue-sharing agreement with Google that will see the search engine appear on Firefox for at least the next three years.

Some doubts were raised recently when it emerged that the agreement providing Google search to Firefox users was set to run out without renewal, but we suppose it was just a case of negotiations stretching out to the final few hours. 84 percent of Mozilla's total revenue, as detailed in its most recent financial statement, comes from its search deal with Google, so it's very easy to see why the company ...

Intel Android smartphone and tablet prototypes tested by MIT, looking promising

Intel Android smartphone and tablet prototypes tested by MIT, looking promising

Posted on Dec 21, 2011 by MG15

Intel's 32nm Medfield system-on-chip has been teased all year as the platform for the company's big leap into mobile devices, and now we finally have some real hands-on feedback to report about it. The MIT Technology Review team was allowed to have a brief play with a pair of Medfield prototypes running Android — a phone similar in size to the iPhone that was on Gingerbread and a tablet close to the iPad 2 in thickness running Ice Cream Sandwich — and came away impressed. Responsiveness, we're told, was pleasing on both devices, though it was the ICS-equipped tablet that invited the greatest praise in being evidently faster and smoother than its Honeycomb brethren. The phone was described as...

Apple Takes One Small Step Against HTC, One Giant Leap Against Android

Apple Takes One Small Step Against HTC, One Giant Leap Against Android

Posted on Dec 21, 2011 by MG15

Apple has been duking it out with Android manufacturers for the past couple years, and very few are safe. Samsung has already suffered some big losses with the banning of its Galaxy Tab in Germany and Australia. HTC, however, has remained mostly safe from Apple’s wrath.

In July the Taiwanese manufacturer had a close call, as Administrative Law Judge Carl Charneski ruled that HTC was infringing two of Apple’s proposed 10 patents. Of course, before any serious action could be taken the ITC needed to have a look, which is exactly what’s happened.

Over 700,000 Android devices are being activated every day

Over 700,000 Android devices are being activated every day

Posted on Dec 21, 2011 by MG15

Andy Rubin (pictured above, left), the father of Google’s mobile operating system, just posted this status update on his Google+ account: “There are now over 700,000 Android devices activated every day.” At first glance it comes off as a hugely impressive number, that’s almost 5 million devices per week, but according to our estimates Android growth is slowing down. Back in May Google was saying they were activating over 400,000 devices per day. In June that number was raised to over 500,000 per day, but more importantly Andy Rubin, via Twitter, said that the activation rate was increasing at a rate of 4.4% week over week. Using Andy’s growth rate we calculated that by the end of October 201...

Only at Google Music: millions of tracks for 49 cents each

Only at Google Music: millions of tracks for 49 cents each

Posted on Dec 20, 2011 by MG15

Filed in: Google

Right after the 10-day 10-cent app extravaganza, Google is at it again with another blowout sale. This time, it is music that is being discounted – Google has slashed the price of over half a million albums down to $4.99. That also means that about ten million tracks can be purchased for a mere 49 cents, or about half their original price. And what makes things even better is that the hottest, most popular titles and the best oldies are both included in the sale.

It is not quite clear, however, how long the promo will run for. It could be just a holiday special, so it would be a good idea to act fast and grab all your favorite tunes on the cheap before it is too late. Just click the source ...

Google+ gets a 'goodie basket' of changes

Google+ gets a 'goodie basket' of changes

Posted on Dec 20, 2011 by MG15

Filed in: Google

Google has announced a 'goodie basket' full of Google+ changes – including a way to dial down the noise and a redesigned Google bar.

The social network got off to a promising start, but Google is aware that all the good work will be for nought if it cannot keep building audience.

So, a raft of changes will certainly be welcomed, especially the headlining feature that allows you to, in Google's words, 'graphic equalize' your stream.

Android is immune to viruses, Windows Phone is not, says Orange customer support

Android is immune to viruses, Windows Phone is not, says Orange customer support

Posted on Dec 20, 2011 by MG15

Okay, Windows Phone handsets may not be perfect when it comes to malware and exploits, but they are definitely safer than their Android counterparts, don't you think? Well, we now know of at least one person in the world who would disagree with that statement, and the disturbing part is that their job expects them to be much more knowledgeable on the matter.

What you see below is an excerpt from a conversation between an Orange service representative and a subscriber. In a nutshell, the unsuspecting user is being misled into believing that Windows Phone devices are prone to getting viruses, while Android smartphones are more or less immune to such problems.

Schmidt suggests Google tablet could launch within six months

Schmidt suggests Google tablet could launch within six months

Posted on Dec 20, 2011 by MG15

Filed in: TabletsGoogle

Google chairman Eric Schmidt may have let slip a Google-branded tablet that will launch in the first half of 2012. In the “next six months we plan to market a tablet of the highest quality,” Schmidt reportedly said during an interview with Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera. Schmidt’s quote could mean many things. First, that Google has plans to develop, market and sell its own tablet (possibly in partnership with Motorola) within the next six months. Or second, and perhaps more likely, Schmidt’s statement could mean that Google is planning to begin pumping up the marketing around Ice Cream Sandwich and improving the experience that Google offers on Android tablets. Currently, Android 3.0...

ITC bans U.S. import of multiple HTC devices in Apple patent ruling

ITC bans U.S. import of multiple HTC devices in Apple patent ruling

Posted on Dec 20, 2011 by MG15

A judge with the United States International Trade Commission (ITC) ruled Monday that HTC is guilty of infringing Apple’s patents in several devices. The ITC also ordered a ban on the import of several of HTC’s smartphones although it is unclear which models are affected. The ban will take effect on April 19th. “Notice is hereby given that the U.S. International Trade Commission has found a violation of section 337 in this investigation and has issued a limited exclusion order prohibiting importation of infringing personal data and mobile communications devices and related software,” the ITC said in its determination. “The Commission has determined that exclusion of articles subject to this ...

British Telecom files patent infringement suit against Google

Posted on Dec 20, 2011 by MG15

Filed in: Google

British Telecommunications (BT) has filed a patent infringement complaint against Google with the U.S. District Court of Delaware in which it has accused Google of “willfully” infringing on six patents. BT is seeking “triple” damages and a injunction against Google, patent expert Florian Muller wrote recently on his website, FOSS Patents. ”BT brings this action to recover the just compensation it is owed and to prevent Google from continuing to benefit from BT’s inventions without authorization,” the suit says. The patents are related to a “service provision system for communications networks,” a “navigation information system,” a “telecommunications apparatus and method,” a “communications ...
