Chrome Engineer Explains Near Billion Dollar Investment in Mozilla
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Some people have been questioning why Google would dump nearly a billion dollars into a three-year search deal with Mozilla and its Firefox browser instead of leaving Mozilla high and dry after their existing agreement expired. Adding to the intrigue is the fact that the new deal is three times higher than the previous one, and is more than Microsoft was willing to pay Mozilla to have Bing featured as the default search. Why give all that money to a competitor? That's the wrong question to ask, according to one of Chrome's developers.
Peter Kasting, a Senior Software Engineer and a member of the Chrome UI team, got all riled up after reading MG Sielger's "Pay to Stay" piece, in which Sielger...

Google and Bing battled over Firefox search deal
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Some more details have emerged relating to the newly-renewed search deal between Google and Firefox, with sources claiming that big G is set to send a minimum of $300 million (£191 million) Mozilla's way every year.
It seems that Microsoft was keen to replace Google with Bing as the default search engine on the Firefox homepage. Its bid is reported to have been aggressive but couldn't out-do the dominant search engine.
Yahoo is also reported to have been sniffing around the deal but could not compete financially.
No surprises
The new $300m deal is significantly higher than previous agreements between Mozilla and Google. All Things D reckons that Google provided around 84 per cent of Mozilla'...

Sony Tablet S to get Android 4.0, but no release date yet
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsTabletsSonyGoogleTablet SAndroid 4.0
Sony Ericsson has already jumped ahead of the rest of the Android manufacturer pack by committing itself to releasing Android 4.0 on a slew of smartphones and even going so far as to to release "preview ROMs" for several of them. On the tablet side, Sony looks like it's being equally aggressive. In a post on its official Sony forums in the UK, a staffer posted a message proclaiming that "Android 4.0 will be available for Sony Tablet." The language was a little vague, but a follow up post narrowed it down to the Sony Tablet S. Unfortunately, Sony didn't announce a time frame for release of Ice Cream Sandwich or even when it might announce a time frame, saying only that those details would "be...

Google Books for Chrome now lets you read offline
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
So you're really enjoying War and Peace, but since you can't carry that tome around with you everywhere (it weighs like eight pounds, right?), you're reading whenever you get a chance on your smartphone, tablet, and laptop with Google Books. There's been one piece missing to that puzzle until now: unlike the phone and tablet apps, Google Chrome didn't offer offline reading. With a new update, you can hover over a book cover and click the "make available offline" checkbox, allowing you to read when you're stuck without an internet connection. It's especially good news for Chromebook users, as it gives them one more thing they can do without the internet. One thing to note, however: only EPUB ...

A Chinese web site is showing leaked photographs of the Huawei MediaPad running Android 4.0.1. While no definitive word has come out of Huawei yet, it certainly does indicate that the manufacturer plans on updating the tablet to Ice Cream Sandwich from the Android 3.2 build of the OS that was installed for the launch of the device. After the update, the tablet will have the ability to make voice calls and one of the leaked spyshots shows the dialer on the tablet.
So far, the Huawei MediaPad has been offered by one carrier in the U.S. where it is known as the T-Mobile SpringBoard. The 7 inch tablet (217ppi pixel density) has a dual-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm MSM8260 processor under the hood along w...

Following the footsteps of Samsung and Sony, LG has come forth with details on which devices will be getting Android 4.0 -- also known as Ice Cream Sandwich -- and when we can begin expecting those upgrades to roll out. The phone manufacturer made its official announcement via its Facebook page, stating that several of its 2011 models will be on the receiving end of ICS starting in the second and third quarters of next year, with a full-scale rollout occurring sometime afterward.
In the second quarter we should expect to see updates for the LG Optimus LTE, Prada 3.0, Optimus 2X, Optimus Sol, myTouch Q and the Eclipse. Fast forwarding to the third quarter, the Optimus 3D, Optimus Black, Optim...

Google's rumored Nexus tablet could cannibalize sales of partner tablets
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsGoogle
Google’s chairman Eric Schmidt made comments during a press conference in mid-December that suggested his company was working on building its own Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich tablet. It’s entirely possible that Schmidt’s comments were taken out of context, so we’re still chalking the slate up as a rumor. If Google does in fact decide to launch a tablet, however, sources speaking to DigiTimes believe it could have an adverse affect on tablet sales for Google’s Android partners. DigiTimes’s sources said Google may deploy a newer Android 4.1 operating system on its tablets while forcing other vendors, such as Acer, Lenovo and Asus to launch devices powered by an older Android 4.0 build. As on...

Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsDellGoogleMini 5Android 2.3
The Dell Streak 5, Dell's original smartphone/tablet hybrid, may be discontinued, but the company is doing good to support its customers, as it has just released the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the 5-inch devices. We will excuse the tardiness of the update since the Streak 5 is dead product. The update offers version 1.5.1 of Dell's Stage UI interface and version 2.27 of the Swype keyboard. Owners can head to Dell's website to download the update now.

Samsung Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab not getting ICS
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsTabletsSamsungGoogleGalaxy SGALAXY TabAndroid 4.0
Just recently, Samsung updated us on its Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) update schedule and which devices are getting it and to our great disappointment the Samsung Galaxy S and the 7-inch original Galaxy Tab are not in there. The latest models of the company are, of course, getting the update: the Samsung Galaxy S II, S II LTE, Galaxy R, Galaxy Tab 10.1, Galaxy Tab 8.9, Galaxy Tab 7.7 and Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus. But that’s little consolation for those owning Samsung’s 2010 flagship or Samsung’s first tablet.
Interestingly, the Nexus S, which is very similar to the Galaxy S, is getting ICS. Why is it so then that the Galaxy S is not? Samsung explains that it’s because of a combination of factors: usi...

Official Android 2.3 Gingerbread update is now available for the Dell Streak 5
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsDellGoogleAndroid 2.3Streak
Remember when the Dell Streak 5 brought big in a literally big way – with its still perceived to be monstrous sized 5” display? Yes, it has been long discontinued in the US, but nevertheless, it’s getting one snazzy update that no doubt brings some surprise.
Specifically, the official Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the original Streak is now available and ready for the taking, thanks to the team over at xda-developers. With the sizable 155MB update, users are required though to have version 350 of the stock recovery installed on the device prior to installation. Once that’s all squared away, you’ll have your Dell Stream 5 transformed completely to an almost new device with Gingerbread.

Firefox Google Deal Gets Renewed
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Early this month we mentioned that Google hadn't renewed the default search deal with Mozilla for Firefox. That deal made the bulk of the income Firefox generates. Neither Google nor Mozilla would comment on the deal that remained unsigned well past expiration.
Mozilla still expected search deals to make a bunch of its revenue showing it hoped the deal would be renewed. Google has now renewed the deal with Mozilla and while the terms were undisclosed I bet Google saved some money.

HTC loses to Apple, several Android phones banned in the U.S.
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleHTCGoogleAndroid
The U.S. International Trade Commission finally issued its decision on a patent dispute between Apple and HTC. The determination states that several of the manufacturer's Android-based handsets will be banned from sale and import in the United States on April 12, 2012. HTC says not to worry though -- they have a plan.
HTC dodged the bullet for 8 of the 10 patent accusations made in April, but those last two were still good enough to land an injunction from the ITC. The determination blocks several of HTC's Android-based devices from import and outright bans the sale of those devices in the U.S. It is currently unknown what exact phones are subject to the injunction.
