Google Nexus Tablet expected in July
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsGoogle
We’ve been hearing loud rumblings that a Google Nexus tablet would be landing soon and that Google would be offering this and other Android tablets directly to consumers through an online store. Well, the folks at The Verge are reporting that we shouldn’t expect Google’s tablet until July at the earliest.
While it’s tough to really call this a “delay” because the device has never been officially announced, The Verge said that Google originally wanted the tablet out in May. The report suggests that Google is pushing it back in order to get it out at a lower price.

Best Buy says ICS for the RAZR delayed, Rezound still on for Friday
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsHTCMotorolaGoogleRezoundAndroid 4.0RAZR
Droid-Life got ahold of an internal employee memo Best Buy sent out yesterday, updating employees on the status of Ice Cream Sandwich updates for some of Verizon’s most popular phones. First, Best Buy told employees what we already reported to you – that the updates headed to the Droid RAZR and RAZR MAXX aren’t going to be ICS, they will be bug fixes.
We’re not sure that translates as ICS being “delayed”; there was never anything but speculation that today’s soak test for RAZR devices would be Android 4.0, so Best Buy may have simply jumped the gun with their previous announcement.

Android marches on with 850,000 devices activated daily
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
With the Android Army growing ever-strong, it’s been a bit ridiculous to see how fast the geeky operating system has skyrocketed to where it is today. Larry Page, CEO of Google, posted an update for 2012 on the Google Investor website today and it seems like Android’s growth hasn’t ceased by a long shot.
Fast forward to today. Android is on fire, and the pace of mobile innovation has never been greater. Over 850,000 devices are activated daily through a network of 55 manufacturers and more than 300 carriers.

Nexus S 4G ICS update starts rolling out
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsGoogleNexus S 4GAndroid 4.0
A few weeks ago we told you Android 4.0 was coming to the Nexus S 4G soon, then just a few days ago we saw a leaked update based on Android 4.0.4. Sprint just let us know that the update is officially rolling out, starting now. The update brings a number of new enhancements from Ice Cream Sandwich, including Android Beam, a new camera interface with panorama mode and the new UI enhancements in Android 4.0 that we've come to love. Sprint's email says that the update will be automatically downloaded to the user's phone when it is available, so keep an eye out for a prompt to apply. It will be sent out in waves, and they make no mention of a manual download process. For those of you rockin...

Australian court holds Google responsible for misleading search ads
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
In a turnaround from a lower court ruling, three Australian Federal Court judges ruled yesterday that Google was responsible for its advertisers' content and that it breached the country's trade law by hosting misleading ads. The case centered on four ads in particular, in which the advertisers used the names of their competitors to ensure the ads appeared in search results for said companies. That, the court ruled, was likely to mislead folks searching for those competitors. While there's no fine imposed on Google with that judgement, the judges are asking Google to change its practices and to pay court costs. The ruling also, of course, sets quite a precedent if it is upheld. Not surprisin...

Gmail and Google Play Books get updated on Android
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Google pushed out two targeted updates for today for a couple of its own Android apps: Gmail and Google Play Books. Each update was targeted at specific versions of Android. Gmail's update targeted Honeycomb tablets with a small addition for Froyo and Gingerbread handsets, whereas the Google Play Books update targeted Froyo and Gingerbread handsets.
The bulk of the updates to Gmail are aimed at giving Honeycomb tablet users the "Android 4.0 (ICS) experience" by adding swipe gestures to move to next and previous messages, the dropdown label menu when tapping the account bar at the top, setting custom notifications for specific labels, and syncing up to the past 30 days worth of messages for ...

Meet Cid, the harbinger of a new CyanogenMod era
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
The team behind the popular Android ROM CyanogenMod has unveiled a new mascot, reflecting the ROM's growth from a small enthusiast project to an AOSP (Android Open Source Project) behemoth with over a million downloads. The new mascot is called Cid (short for Cyanogen ID), and it represents "each user’s unique place in [the] community." Those of you following the development of CyanogenMod 9, which is based on the Android 4.0 firmware, will know that the team is doing things a little differently this time round.
"This new mascot will be unique for CyanogenMod and provide an identity and attitude by which the project can continue to develop a mature Android OS."
As opposed to using the third-...

Google+ now pulls and displays information from Google Contacts
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Google+ has been updated to pull data from Google Contacts and display it in the profiles of your Google+ friends, starting today. If you're a Gmail or Android user, chances are you've got a well-populated contacts list, and now information on that list will automatically show up in a Google+ user's "about" section — for your eyes only. It's a minor update, but a useful one, and something that most smartphones and other services already do when they sync contact information from multiple sources.

The latest comScore numbers have hit the street; quick, all you fanbois need to go sharpen your pitchforks for the ensuing debate! Are they gone? Ok, let’s take a sober look at the numbers before they get back!
In some sense comScore is just reporting more of the same – Android and iOS grew their share of the smartphone market, while Microsoft and RIM continue to shed market share. This quarter’s numbers are punctuated by the fact that Android has now eclipsed the 50% barrier for all smartphones owned in the U.S.

HTC working on an Android-based media player?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Portable Media PlayersOperating SystemsHTCGoogleAndroid
File this under rumors but it seems HTC is working on an Android-based media player. Guess they like Apple’s iPod Touch sales figures and since Samsung is already doing it – why not give it a shot? Personally I don’t get the point of such devices — since my phone does all that plus allows me to make phone calls — but that’s me.

Australian court finds Google guilty of misleading consumers
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
An Australian court on Tuesday ruled that Google engaged in “misleading and deceptive” advertising practices, Reuters reported. The court said that between March 2006 and July 2007, Google published search results for queries related to Honda Australia with paid advertisements for Honda competitor CarSales. The advertisements led users to believes that CarSales was linked to Honda Australia. The search giant argued that it was not responsible for misleading search results since it was merely a conduit for advertisers. The court disagreed, however, and ordered Google to set up a compliance program that will ensure paid advertisements will not mislead consumers. The Australian Competition and ...

Ice Cream Sandwich melts and leaks for the Samsung Galaxy Note
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsSamsungGoogleGALAXY NoteAndroid 4.0
A functional Android Ice Cream Sandwich build for the one and only Samsung Galaxy Note has leaked on the Internets, and it even comes as a trendy one-click installer Odin file.
Don't expect the Premium Suite with this leak, just Android 4.0 covered in a layer of TouchWiz, but it should be good to play around with until the official thing hits this quarter. Your internal memory gets wiped during install, so make sure you move the stuff out temporarily while updating.

Oracle, Google Fail to Reach Settlement in Java Patent Lawsuit
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Google and Oracle sat down for a last-ditch, court-ordered settlement conference over the weekend, but their latest attempt at settling their longstanding patent dispute failed to yield any results even after six hours of parleying. With the latest settlement conference between the two companies proving just as sleeveless as those before it, their protracted patent dispute is now all set to go to trial.
"Despite their diligent efforts and those of their able counsel, the parties have reached an irreconcilable impasse in their settlement discussions with the undersigned," wrote U.S. Magistrate Judge Paul Grewal in an order Monday. "No further conferences shall be convened. The parties should...
