Canon unveils 18MP, full-frame EOS-1D X with super metering

Canon unveils 18MP, full-frame EOS-1D X with super metering

Posted on Oct 18, 2011 by MG1

Canon brought out a long-anticipated new full-frame EOS pro camera in the EOS-1D X. The 18-megapixel camera unifies the EOS-1D camera line and is a major leap in performance over the 1D Mark IV with two DIGIC 5 main processors with about 17 times more raw power than the DIGIC 4s they replace. A DIGIC 4 still sits inside as a third processor but here is used for very advanced metering: it drives an Intelligent Subject Analysis system that, with a 100,000-pixel metering sensor, can check brightness, target colors, and human faces to get more precise exposure without burdening the main processors.
The two main processors contribute to a maximum continuous speed of 12 frames per second in RAW, e...

Canon DSLRs may get aperture adjustment rings

Canon DSLRs may get aperture adjustment rings

Posted on Sep 28, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: CamerasCanon

Canon may soon be offering aperture adjustment rings for its DSLR cameras. Adjusting apertures on modern day DSLRs has been relegated to electronic controls that make it difficult to get a smooth transition between aperture settings, which is especially important when it comes to recording videos. Thanks to a patent application from Canon, we now know that they’ve been working on addressing this issue.
These new lenses that Canon is working on, feature the typical focus ring and zoom ring, but add a third ring for controlling the aperture. However, unlike old school cameras, this aperture ring controls the setting electronically rather than through a mechanical iris.

Canon Develops Ultra-Large-Scale, Ultra-High-Sensitivity CMOS Sensor

Posted on Sep 20, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: CamerasCanon

Canon has announced that an ultra-large-scale, ultra-high-sensitivity CMOS sensor developed by the company has enabled the video recording of meteors with an equivalent apparent magnitude of 10. Apparent magnitude is a measure of a celestial body’s brightness as seen by an observer on Earth. A star (or meteor) whose apparent magnitude is 10 is absolutely invisible to the naked eye. The sensor, with a chip size measuring 202 x 205 mm - the world’s largest surface area for a CMOS sensor - was installed in the Schmidt telescope at the University of Tokyo’s Kiso Observatory, Institute of Astronomy, School of Science. The photo above shows just how big this sensor is compared to a 35mm full-frame...
