Waiting for those new BlackBerries arriving on AT&T? After they've arrived on Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile, the wait will soon be over for AT&T as well. The nation's second-biggest carrier will get three new BlackBerries riding its 4G HSPA+ network:
- the RIM BlackBerry Bold 9900 has its release date set for November 6th,
- RIM BlackBerry Torch 9860 coming November 6th,

Sprint denied access to AT&T documents in fight against merger

U.S. District Judge Ellen Huvelle recently shot down Sprint’s request to access a number of documents related to AT&T’s planned acquisition of T-Mobile USA. “You don’t stand in the shoes of the consumer or the Department of Justice,” Huvelle said. Sprint originally sued to block the merger in September, shortly after the U.S. Justice Department filed a similar case in August. AT&T recently asked a judge to toss the suit entirely and, like Huvelle, said Sprint was not in a position to argue from the consumer’s standpoint. “Sprint cannot wrap itself in the cloak of wireless service consumers’ interest because Sprint is not a consumer but instead a competitor in the sale of wireless services,” ...

The Motorola RAZR has made it past the FCC and inside it carried radios tuned to AT&T's frequencies. But before you AT&T customers start getting excited, the frequencies are also used by many Canadian carriers and it is expected that the Motorola RAZR will be heading across the border after it is launched by Verizon. The shared bands are GSM 850/1900 and WCDMA Bands II/V for 3G.
No one is ruling out an AT&T variant of the Motorola DROID RAZR as it would make sense for the Schaumberg based company to spread its flagship phone to as many carriers as possible. Whatever happened to tradition? After all, it was AT&T that helped RIM step up and become a more relevant smartphone manufacturer with the launch of the BlackBerry Bold 9000 in 2008. The shape and size of the device had many becoming fans at first touch. And of course, the physical QWERTY on that phone is one of the best ever to be melded onto a handset. We can still remember the ads AT&T was running proclaiming it the fastest 'Berry ever with a 624MHz processor under the hood (compared to the single-core 1.2GHz processor in the BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930).

MetroPCS is interested in purchasing spectrum and subscribers from AT&T and T-Mobile, Bloomberg said Friday. Leap Wireless and Dish Network were also approached and Leap may still be interested in making an offer. The deal with MetroPCS would likely amount to less than $4 billion. In August, The Wall Street Journal revealed AT&T had hired Bank of America’s Merill Lynch to advise it on selling as much as $8 billion in assets. Later that month, the United States government sued to block the planned merger when the U.S. Justice Department said the deal would “substantially lessen competition” in the U.S. wireless market.

Verizon Communications on Friday revealed that it sold 2 million iPhone handsets during the third quarter of 2011, 700,000 fewer than top rival AT&T. Verizon reported its third-quarter earnings on Friday and during a conference call with analysts, the carrier revealed that it sold 2 million iPhones last quarter. AT&T Passes 100 Million Wireless Subscriber Mark as Revenue Falls Flat

AT&T added 2.1 million wireless subscribers during the company's third fiscal quarter for 2011, enough to get over the hump of 100 million subscribers, the wireless carrier announced today. The company also said that sales of Android and other non-iPhone smartphones were nearly half of 4.8 million smartphone sales for the quarter, which has to be news to Google's ears.
The iPhone is still selling well too, and in fact AT&T said in a separate press release that it sold 1 million iPhone 4S devices as of Tuesday. FCC petitions AT&T for more clarification on T-Mobile purchase

The Federal Communications Commission has sent a letter to AT&T asking the carrier how its proposed acquisition of T-Mobile will add jobs to the American workforce. The FCC has asked AT&T similar questions already, but it deems that AT&T's answers have been incomplete thus far.
The FCC is looking for the last five years of reports covering workforce and job creation from AT&T. It wants "all analyses, reports, data, or other information in AT&T's possession, custody or control that analyze the size and location of AT&T's workforce both before and as anticipated after the merger. Rick Kaplan, chief of the Federal Communication Commission’s Wireless Telecommunications Bureau, sent a letter to AT&T on Thursday asking the carrier to clarify just how the proposed merger with T-Mobile USA will add jobs in the United States. “Our review of the information currently in our record suggests that AT&T’s responses on this issue remain incomplete,” Kaplan said.
