AT&T Reveals First LTE Phones: HTC Vivid and Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungHTCAT&TGalaxy S IIVivid
For a few months now AT&T has had an LTE network, but no phones that could take advantage of it. Well, that all changes today — AT&T has just announced that the Android-powered HTC Vivid and the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket will be the first to run on their LTE network, and will hit store shelves on November 6.
The HTC Vivid packs a 1.2GHz dual-core processor under the proverbial hood, and a 4.5-inch qHD display graces its face. A 8-megapixel camera capable of shooting 1080p video occupies the Vivid’s rear end, and 16GB of internal storage (expandable up to 32GB with the right microSD cards) rounds out the package. HTC has kept mum on the specific version of Android the Vivid runs, but it d...

FCC bashes AT&T/T-Mobile merger in public report
Like UnlikeFiled in: T-MobileAT&T
The Federal Communications Commission released a 109-page report on Tuesday evening that provides a great deal of insight into what the government agency thought of AT&T’s planned acquisition of T-Mobile USA. However, AT&T has questioned exactly why the government agency decided to release the report since, hours before the report was released, AT&T successfully withdrew its merger application. The FCC said that the acquisition would give AT&T a “unilateral incentive” to increase its prices, which could have had an echo effect on the industry should Sprint and Verizon Wireless follow suit, The Wall Street Journal reported. Read on for more.
AT&T promised the deal would create thousands of jo...

FCC Provides Partial Explanation for AT&T Denial
Like UnlikeFiled in: AT&T
The Federal Communications Commission today provided a peek at the reasoning it employed when examining AT&T's proposed acquisition of T-Mobile USA. The FCC said that its analysis indicates that combining AT&T and T-Mobile's networks would result in some network efficiencies, but it believes AT&T has overstated what those efficiencies will be. The FCC is concerned that the roaming and backhaul markets will be severely impacted if the merger is allowed; it believes that any cost savings realized by the merger (unlikely as they are) will not be passed down to consumers; it believes that AT&T will eventually upgrade its entire HSPA+ footprint to LTE anyway; and the FCC believes there will be si...

Even After Withdrawing Its Application, AT&T Hits Another Huge Hurdle In T-Mo Deal
Like UnlikeFiled in: T-MobileAT&T
In the wake of withdrawing its application to acquire T-Mobile, AT&T has hit yet another obstacle otherwise known as the FCC. See, before AT&T pulled its application, the FCC had big plans to put the deal before an administrative law judge, effectively prolonging the process and magnifying the details of the merger. As part of those big plans, the FCC had compiled an 109-page report with their findings during the review process. AT&T had expected this massive report to stay under the rug since it had withdrawn its application, but the FCC feels it “furthers transparency.”
And what, might you ask, is in this staff report?
Really, really bad news for AT&T. From the FCC’s official release:

FBI arrests four hackers hired to infiltrate AT&T
Like UnlikeFiled in: AT&T
Earlier this week, AT&T claimed to be investigating an intrusion attempt on its system. However, the company said it did not believe any accounts were compromised. Reports are now surfacing that AT&T has been working with the FBI and Philippine law enforcement to apprehend attackers, although a link between the two events has not been confirmed.
The Philippine's Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) stated, "The hacking activity resulted in almost $2 million in losses incurred by the company", referring to AT&T's involvement as a target of the attack.

AT&T and T-Mobile USA flounder as disaster deal crumbles
Like UnlikeFiled in: T-MobileAT&T
AT&T and Deutsche Telekom’s decision to withdraw their FCC merger application yesterday is a sign that the deal is dead in the water, analysts and industry agrees, with the final question not whether the acquisition goes ahead but how much pain each carrier suffers as it fails. Deutsche Telecom is expected to in effect sink T-Mobile USA rather than commit the investments the carrier needs in order to remain competitive in the US market, though the exact way in which the company would be shuttered is unclear.

HTC Titan sold out on AT&T
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTCAT&TTitan
It may have been a mistake to sell the HTC Titan for only 1c yesterday, as it seems the gigantic handset has proven so popular that it is now temporarily out of stock on AT&T.
The handset was already in short supply even before the promotion, and many users had difficulty taking advantage of the deal.
Hopefully Microsoft convinced AT&T to order a good supply, and the shortage is an indication of popularity and not just low stock.
Are any of our readers having difficulty getting their hands on an HTC Titan? Let us know below.

AT&T hack attempt thwarted
Like UnlikeFiled in: AT&T
Adding to AT&T's earlier headache, a wireless data outage in the Northeastern part of the U.S., the company is emailing some of its customers to inform them of an "organized and systemic" hack attempt that was made on customer accounts. The company further states "we do not believe that the perpetrators of this attack obtained access to your online account or any of the information contained in that account." AT&T spokesperson Mark Siegel said that less than one percent of the company's customers were affected and that no accounts were breached. He also stated that AT&T would continue to investigate to determine the source of the attack.

AT&T iPhone 4S crushes Verizon in data testing

AT&T’s HSPA+ network is the carrier’s iPhone 4S trump card, according to data speed analysis in the US, delivering websites twice as fast as CDMA rivals like Verizon. The fifth-gen Apple smartphone bested competing carriers on page rendering, uploads and downloads, analysts Metrico Wireless found in their testing of the iPhone 4S, though Verizon proved slightly more stable when it came to connecting – and not dropping – calls.

AT&T remains the preferred carrier for iPhone 4S owners
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleAT&TiPhone 4s
Even though the iPhone 4 came to Verizon as an alternative carrier in February, the iPhone 4S was the first phone to launch without exclusivity to AT&T. AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint all carry the iPhone 4S nationwide — well, at least when it’s in stock — and even with all the complaints over the years, customers are still choosing AT&T more than any other carrier. Based on statistics from Localytics, more than half of all iPhone 4S units activated are on AT&T.
AT&T’s iPhone 4S has claimed 56 percent of market share, making it the leading carrier for Apple’s latest smartphone. Coming in far behind is Verizon with 32 percent and last but not least, Sprint with just 12 percent. The latter is fairl...

AT&T says T-Mobile deal will close later than expected
Like UnlikeFiled in: T-MobileAT&T
AT&T has pushed back the date it expects to close the books on its planned merger with T-Mobile and spectrum purchase from Qualcomm, The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday. The carrier had originally planned to close both acquisitions by March of 2012, although it now expects the required approvals to take as much as three months longer to gain. The carrier now says the deal should be approved by the end of the first half next year. AT&T recently ran into speed bumps with both deals. In August the Federal Communications Commission announced that it would review both AT&T’s spectrum purchase from Qualcomm and its merger with T-Mobile USA at the same time. Later that month, the U.S. govern...

HTC Vivid and Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket go on sale, lead AT&T's march on LTE

You didn't expect Ma Bell to open its first LTE markets without tossing in a few 4G friendly toys, did you? Of course not, we told you as much last week -- but today things get official: The Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket and HTC Vivid (formerly known as the Holiday) are ready to take Ma Bell's new LTE nodes for a spin. Not much has changed since the last time we saw these phones -- the Skyrocket still knocks the Galaxy S II's screen size and processor speed up a notch (a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED Plus Display and 1.5GHz CPU, for those of you keeping track), and the Vivid still has a 4.5-inch qHD display, 1080p HD video recording via an 8MP rear camera and a 1.2GHz CPU. What's new? AT&T is curren...

AT&T asks Sprint to disclose competition plans pending outcome of planned merger
Like UnlikeFiled in: AT&T
AT&T recently requested that a federal judge push Sprint to reveal what its plans for competition will be pending the outcome of AT&T’s planned acquisition of T-Mobile USA. Sprint has been a staunch opponent of the deal and it is clear that AT&T has at least some worry Sprint may try to team up with T-Mobile should the purchase be denied. “Sprint is a strong and vibrant competitor as evidenced by events in the past six months — a fact that is critical to AT&T’s defense of DOJ’s claim that the challenged merger will dampen competition in the mobile wireless industry,” AT&T attorney Steven Benz, who is an employee of Kellogg, Huber, Hansen, Todd, Evans & Figel PLLC, said. In addition to AT&T’s...
