There has been speculation that Microsoft will drop the Windows CE kernel for some time now, and this only accelerated once Microsoft ported Windows 8 to ARM.
Now Tom Hounsell, hacking around the recently leaked Windows 8 build has found some SMS handling code in some .dll’s at C:\Windows\\WinMetadata\*.dll.

Smartphone data usage jumps 89% in the U.S., Android users still biggest gluttons

The Nielsen Company on Friday released its latest findings regarding smartphone data usage and as expected, data consumption continued to increase at an explosive pace in the first quarter of 2011. In the same quarter last year, the average smartphone user consumed 230MB of data on their device each month. Last quarter, that number shot up 89% to 435MB. The heaviest data users are responsible for the bulk of the growth, with average data usage among the top 10% of smartphone owners having grown 155% from 1.8GB to 4.6GB on average each month.

Motorola puts brakes on DROID 2 Global Gingerbread update

Despite Verizon Wireless' announcement that the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the Motorola DROID 2 Global is rolling out to users now, Motorola has said that the update is not ready and is not available. Speaking on its support forums, a Motorola representative said that the update is not rolling out anytime soon and that there is no date given as to when it will be available for users. Sad news for owners of the DROID 2 Global who had gotten their hopes up, though this isn't the first time an update has seen rocky starts.

The lawsuit action between Oracle and Google started last August with Oracle's claims of Google infringing a bunch of Java patents in its Android code, but did you know how big this whole process is? In the latest development of the saga, Oracle states that Google tried to hide “references to the fact that Oracle damages claims in this case are in the billions of dollars.” But does Oracle really stand a chance in getting those billions?

Apple holding off on new Macs until Lion launch?

Apple may be eager enough to get Mac OS X Lion on new hardware that it's delaying new Macs until Lion's July release, tipsters maintained Thursday. The new MacBook Air is reportedly already set to go and is being held back only to flash them with Lion once the software is done. AppleInsider in getting the info also believed an upgraded Mac mini and a Thunderbolt-oriented LED Cinema Display were both waiting for the same treatment.
The only delays are likely to be triggered by Lion itself being pushed back.

Nokia VP Victor Saeijs has this week disclosed the six launch markets for the vanguard devices born out of the Microsoft-Nokia partnership. France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, and the UK will all count themselves as hosts to Nokia's Windows Phone debut, but the company's mother nation of Finland has strangely been left out in the cold. Sprint’s Kyocera Echo is currently the only dual-screen smartphone available, but the Echo may not hold that throne for much longer. Pocket-Lint has gotten its hands on several photos of a new dual-screen Android handset made by LG that’s possibly headed to T-Mobile in the U.K. The secondary display doesn’t look like it’s as versatile as the Echo’s — instead it appears limited to offering quick access to shortcuts — and it certainly has a unique split-keyboard design that would take some getting used to. The phone could launch as the Maxx Q or the Flip II if it ever makes a debut, but there’s no word if that’s definite. Hit the jump for a few more photos.

Yahoo Cranks Out Music Player App for Androids

Yahoo today announced Play by Yahoo! Music, a new music/MP3 player for Android handsets. The application offers a number of features that bank on Yahoo's existing services. The music player includes its own form of Shazam/SoundHound and can identify single tracks and a series of tracks. It also includes a streaming news channel that provides updates on musicians and artists. The player offers what Yahoo calls behavior-based smart shuffle. The player uses past playing history to create moods/playlists. Last, it includes Twitter and Facebook integration so users can share their music selections with friends. The application is free to download and is already available in the Android Market.
