Notion Ink CEO Rohan Shravan has been keeping everyone up to speed on the development process for the Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Notion Ink Adam tablet, and today marks a pretty big day in that process. Just before the new year, Rohan showed off a pre-Alpha build of the Android 4.0 update, but today brought the beta release of the ROM.
The development seems to have come along fairly well, and the team now has confirmed that 3G is now working, as well as graphics acceleration, YouTube HD, and USB. Swype updated to support Ice Cream Sandwich

The popular third-party software keyboard Swype has been updated to support Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Swype is an app that uses word prediction in combination with swiping motions to allow users to quickly write emails, text messages, tweets and anything else that requires text input. The software is still not available in the Android Market, unfortunately, and it must be downloaded from the company’s website. Though the software is currently in beta stages for Android 4.0, users have yet to report any major issues.

RIM extends free PlayBook offer for Android developers

Earlier this month, Research in Motion began to offer free BlackBerry PlayBook tablets to any Android developers that repackaged their apps for App World. Due to overwhelming interest, the Monday deadline for registration has been extended to February 15th and all developers will have until March 2nd to submit their apps. As of last Friday, there had been more than 1,500 app submissions and over 6,600 new developers registered in the BlackBerry App World according to RIM. According to a post on its blog late Monday, the company is “working around the clock to approve vendor registrations and app submissions.”

Samsung has outed its latest tablet, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0), the Ice Cream Sandwich successor to the original Galaxy Tab model from 2010. Built around a 7-inch 1024 x 600 PLS LCD display, the new Galaxy Tab 2 has a 1GHz dual-core processor paired with 1GB of RAM, along with WiFi and a 3-megapixel rear facing camera.
There are several signs that this is a budget model, targeting the entry-level in Samsung’s expansive tablet line-up. Looky what we have here – a brand new HTC Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone! What's that model we're dealing with here? Well, you might be surprised, but we actually don't have a clue. We were recently approached by a tipster of ours who was generous enough to share these pics with us. Thanks to the photos, we can learn quite a bit about this mysterious handset, but unfortunately, we can't be sure how it's going to be called, or what carriers it may end up on. However, some of our observant readers have noted that the 4G LTE logo that's visible during the loading screen is the one that Verizon uses for its handsets, so that's a pretty good guess as to where the phone may end up.

Motorola exec's comments on Android updates don't jibe with reality

This seems like a strange claim, and we're not even sure that we believe what Motorola is saying, but it seems that Motorola executive Christy Wyatt believes that the Nexus hardware which is to blame for the slow updates from manufacturers.
Wyatt is the senior VP and general manager of Motorola's Business Enterprise Unit. According to Wyatt, "When Google does a release of the software ... they do a version of the software for whatever phone they just shipped. The rest of the ecosystem doesn't see it until you see it. Considering that the white HTC Sensation is shipping in Europe starting March 1st with Android 4.0, it might be no surprise that the Sensation series will be the first HTC phones to be updated to the latest Android version. Google Wallet PIN cracked on rooted Android devices

The security of the PIN that protects Google Wallet transactions has been compromised — though most users won't need to worry about the issue for now, as it only applies to users who have rooted their Android smartphone. The key issue is that the PIN is stored on the device itself instead of in the secure NFC element, although it is in an encrypted format. That means that if your Android smartphone is rooted, if somebody takes your phone, he or she will be able to access the encrypted file that stores your PIN. From there, it's a relatively simple matter of running a program that uses a brute force method to guess your PIN.

Chrome for Android may have set its sights on being the default browser on your Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone, but you’ll have to make do with no Flash Player support if you give in to the new beta’s allure. Having announced that its Flash Player mobile plans were over back in November, Adobe has confirmed that Chrome for Android does indeed arrive too late for a plugin of its own. That’s despite Android 4.0 already having Flash Player support in the native browser.

CyanogenMod team releases another CM9 progress report

Long-time users of CyanogenMod are used to seeing a new version released shortly after the code is deposited to AOSP. That usually places CM users on the latest version of Android weeks, if not months, ahead of all non-Nexus Android phones. This time has turned out to be a bit different, and the CM team posted an explanation on their website today.
The biggest factor seems to be the huge jump in the code base between Gingerbread (Android 2.3) and Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0). The CM team indicates that they more or less started from scratch with the ICS build of CyanogenMod (CM9), and have been porting their CM7 customized tools to the ICS code.
