Xbox 360 dashboard update arrives tomorrow, new content partners confirmed

Posted on Dec 06, 2011 by MG1

Microsoft is set to roll out a new dashboard update for its Xbox 360 console tomorrow that places a greater emphasis on its media center capabilities rather than just gaming. It's based on the same Metro design paradigm as Windows Phone 7 and the upcoming Windows 8, using flat squares and live tiles. It'll be a mandatary update, but according to early reviews, that's a good thing. The Xbox has never looked better.
One of the biggest aspects of the update is that it'll bring new Metro-inspired 'apps' from different content partners, advancing Microsoft's effort to conquer your living room and beat out alternatives from Apple and Google. The initial lineup is not too different from what's av...

Xbox TV puts Microsoft ahead of Apple and Google

Xbox TV puts Microsoft ahead of Apple and Google

Posted on Dec 06, 2011 by MG1

Gaming has long been Microsoft’s wildcard: while the company struggles to find its feet with Windows Phone, and faces a difficult tablet market when its Windows 8 slates finally appear, the Xbox 360 continues to sell strongly. Now Xbox TV has arrived to not only reassure 360-owning gamers that they made the right console choice, but broaden the 360′s appeal to a whole new segment. It’s not entirely fashionable to praise Microsoft, especially when it’s over something that, buried in the company’s history books, they’ve tried and failed at before. Smart TV has suffered the usual ignominies and from the usual flaws: sluggish hardware, confusing interface, dawdling internet connections. Now, wit...

Microsoft sells nearly 1 million Xbox 360s in record week in Xbox history

Microsoft sells nearly 1 million Xbox 360s in record week in Xbox history

Posted on Nov 30, 2011 by MG1

The aging Xbox 360 just recorded the biggest sales week in its not-quite-venerable history, moving nearly one million units over the seven day period, specifically selling more than 960,000 consoles in the U.S. during the week of Black Friday. For a console that’s entering the seventh year of its product lifestyle, that’s one very impressive statistic. Of course, Black Friday and Cyber Monday are the pivotal factors here, but the numbers themselves are still stellar, to say the very least.

Microsoft Working On Not One, But Two New Xbox Product Lines

Microsoft Working On Not One, But Two New Xbox Product Lines

Posted on Nov 28, 2011 by MG1

Finally, next generation gaming consoles are around the corner. It will have an uplifting effect on the entire gaming industry as it will raise the bar for visual and technical detail in games. Many of today's games are designed keeping consoles in mind, and so their PC platform versions don't look much more than what has come to be known as "console-ports". There are a few exceptions to this, but it would be refreshing to see most game developers move on to creating games that take advantage of today's insanely powerful PC platform, because the console platform will have caught up technologically.
Rumors have it, that Microsoft will be developing not one, but two product lines that succeed...

Microsoft employees claim to be working on next Xbox

Microsoft employees claim to be working on next Xbox

Posted on Oct 11, 2011 by MG1

I think we all knew when the Nintendo Wii U was unveiled back at E3 that other next gen consoles would be coming too. It’s also safe to say that shortly after one version of a game console launches, the next is being worked on. When some workers at Microsoft hint they are working on the next Xbox, take it with a grain of salt. They probably could have said they were working in it years ago.
Over the last several months were have heard a few rumors that Microsoft was at work on the Xbox 720. This is the first “confirmation” from someone claiming to work on the project that another console is coming. The tip comes from the resume pages of some Microsoft workers on LinkedIn. I guess someone did...

Microsoft expected to announce Xbox 360 TV plans today

Posted on Oct 06, 2011 by MG1

Microsoft will likely announce plans to bring premium television programming to the Xbox 360 today. Essentially, users would be able to convert their Microsoft gaming console into a cable box / streaming video service, as first reported by All Things D.
Microsoft has allegedly been in talks with cable networks and media companies for nearly a year to bring television programming to the 360. But as we inch closer to an announcement, things aren’t looking as promising as they once were.
While the concept seems like a great idea, there is one big catch. The service isn’t really any different than other premium streaming offerings in that you need to be subscribed to cable through a traditional ...

Xbox 360 fall dashboard video leaked

Xbox 360 fall dashboard video leaked

Posted on Oct 04, 2011 by MG1

A video has been posted online which shows off the upcoming Xbox 360 dashboard update. The footage is courtesy of a recently leaked software development kit for the 360 that includes the new dashboard, says TG Daily.
It is suspected that an Xbox employee in France somehow obtained a copy of the software. Content in the video is in French and was originally posted by Logic-Sunrise. The soundless clip gives the general public their first look at the dashboard in full motion. Microsoft released some slides of the planned update earlier this year but video certainly provides a richer experience.
The scheduled update will allow users to browse content faster and use the Kinect motion-sensing devi...

Microsoft Makes Complete 180 On Xbox 3D

Microsoft Makes Complete 180 On Xbox 3D

Posted on Sep 02, 2011 by MG1

The latest rumor is that Microsoft will be integrating 3D features to the Xbox 360 in a firmware update. And it could be happening really soon.
If true, this would be a complete reversal from last year when Microsoft said 3D was too niche and it had absolutely no interest in encouraging developers to make engaging 3D content for the 360.
Microsoft faced a bit of pressure to jump on the 3D bandwagon after Sony made such a big deal of 3D on PS3 last year. Sony still thinks it's an important strategy and one that will keep it ahead in the always competitive console wars.

Microsoft eliminating glossy Xbox 360 in favor of matte finishes

Microsoft eliminating glossy Xbox 360 in favor of matte finishes

Posted on Aug 17, 2011 by MG3

Glossy finishes on things that we touch a lot like notebooks and game consoles are nice looking – when they are clean. That is a rare occurrence though because as soon as you touch the devices the glossy finish picks up fingerprints and smudges and starts to look rough. I know I don’t want to have to start polishing my console to make it look good.

Xbox 360 to go forever matte as glossy is discontinued, fingerprints look for a new home

Xbox 360 to go forever matte as glossy is discontinued, fingerprints look for a new home

Posted on Aug 16, 2011 by MG1

Say it ain't so! Within the next few weeks Microsoft will be phasing out its 250GB Xbox 360's glossy finish in favor of the murdered-out matte currently found on its 4GB models. Major Nelson recently took to his blog announcing the news amid apparent speculation that the pricier variant would actually be offered in both flavors. If you're a fan of shiny things -- and a lover of fingerprints -- Major says you'll still have time to pick one up as stock is shuffled, and also noted there'll probably be glossy limited editions in the future. Rest in peace dear glossy friend, our microfiber cloths won't know what to do with them themselves.
