Orange UK's HTC Desire HD getting Android 2.3 update as we speak
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsHTCOrangeGoogleDesire HDAndroid 2.3
Orange UK and HTC have started rolling out Android 2.3 Gingerbread updates for the Desire HD. If you’re in the “affected” group you can already check to see whether a new update is available. If it isn’t – don’t worry. I’m sure HTC’s servers are dying at the moment as the company tries to push the software to all users.
You probably know what Gingerbread brings, so I won’t repeat it here. Still I’ll mention the improved Copy/Paste which actually makes the functionality usable.
As usual, we remind you it’s good practice to backup all of your PIM data (contacts and calendars) before updating. Your stuff may be in the cloud, but having a local copy is always a plus. When you’re done with that —...

Nokia Money finally starts shipping after a nearly 2 year wait, comes preloaded on the X1-01 in India
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIAX1-01
Nokia announced “Nokia Money” back in late August 2009 and with it the promise to deliver a service that would let anyone with a mobile phone send and receive money using nothing more than a text message or phone call. Here we are, several days before the start of July 2011, and the Finnish handset maker has just now announced that Nokia Money is finally coming to market; India only for now. The service works thanks to partnerships with Union Bank of India, Yes Bank, and Obopay, which Nokia invested roughly $70 million in during March 2009. What about devices? The first handset to ship with Nokia Money preloaded will be the X1-01, one of Nokia’s first dual SIM devices, but nearly every phone...

Ericsson trials LTE Advanced with 10x the speed in Sweden
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesEricsson
Ericsson has demonstrated the next generation of LTE networks in Sweden that promises 10 times the speed of the already fast LTE that we know today.
Called LTE Advanced, the new network uses larger chunks of carrier spectrum and extended multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) functionality to hit speeds of up to 900Mbps in the trials. The demonstration used 60MHz allocations of spectrum, compared to the 20MHz that is currently used by LTE today.
Ericsson expects the new LTE Advanced technology to be commercially viable by 2013. At that point we can expect AT&T to throw its hands up in the air and say there is just not enough spectrum available, as it is already having trouble piecing togethe...

HTC EVO 3D listed as “coming soon” on Vodafone UK's web page
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTCEVO 3D
Well, this didn't take long. The GSM version of the HTC EVO 3D may have been announced only yesterday, but Vodafone UK is already teasing us with a listing of the smartphone on its web page. Teasing seems to be the most suitable term for it as the EVO 3D is only listed in the “coming soon” section with no word regarding its price or availability, at least for now. However, if the rumor that we heard not long ago turns out to be true, it wouldn't be long before the smartphone hits Vodafone's shelves.
Currently, Vodafone UK appears to be the only European carrier to have the EVO 3D in its portfolio, but other carriers are very likely to follow suit. First of all, during its announcement yester...

Samsung rumored making Galaxy S II Plus with 1.4GHz chip
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsung
Samsung is rumored to be working on a high-end iPhone 5 rival, says Pop Herald. The phone, which may or may not be known as the Galaxy S II Plus, would sport a 1.4GHz processor instead of the 1.2GHz in the current S II. The iPhone 5 is expected to arrive in September, and would mean flagship handsets from competitors would be about six months behind.
There should also be 1GB of RAM onboard and Android 2.3.4 overlaid by the TouchWiz UI. Google Talk with video call support would come with the new OS build. The device, whatever its name, is expected to launch in August or September.
Samsung has already been having strong sales of the current S II and may have little incentive to upgrade the pho...

Nokia N950: a N900 successor offered exclusively for developers
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIAN950
Despite what you’ve heard the Nokia N9 is not the only MeeGo smartphone in town. Nokia has quietly unveiled the N950, but with it one small caveat — it will be a developer-only device. Though it’s not destined for retail consumption, our inner N900 fanboy has us itching for a fix. Let’s take a look at what’s inside the Nokia N950, shall we?
At first glance the only difference between N9 and the N950 appears to be the addition of a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Upon further inspection you’ll notice the N950 features a 4-inch TFT display while the N9 packs a more vibrant 3.9-inch AMOLED set.
In terms of build quality the N950 is forged from anodized aluminum whereas the N9 is encased in unibody p...

Nokia N5 leak hints at slow Symbian death
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIAN5
Just when you thought that Windows Phone 7 (with a bit of help from MeeGo) had kicked the last breath out of Symbian, the Nokia N5 - boasting an updated version of Symbian Anna - goes and leaks all over the web.
We know that the days of the Nokia and Symbian love affair are numbered, with the final signatures now in place for all developing and support of Symbian up to Accenture from October 2011.
But we also know that Nokia CEO Stephen Elop has said the company plans an additional 10 Symbian-powered handsets over the next 12 months.
And it looks like the N5 could be the first of these handsets, with rumours of the N6 and N7 to follow doing the rounds as well, after it was snapped by Blurryc...

Nokia X6 gets a new software update
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIAX6
Nokia released a new software update for the X6, its first Symbian S60 5th Edition smartphone with a capacitive touchscreen. Firmware version 32 (or 3.2) brings several performance enhancements while at the same time making the device more stable than ever. In other words, many (if not all) of the known/reported bugs have been fixed and some of the apps updated.
Presuming you own the Nokia X6, go to “Settings” -> “Tools” -> “Software update” or dial *#0000#, hit “Options” -> “Check for update” and take it from there. It is advisable to do this with your battery fully charged and while in a hotspot (so that the download is fast).
Before proceeding make sure to backup all of your data, just in...

CSI Virtual MasterCard app bringing mobile payments to iOS, Android and BlackBerry
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
Shortly after MasterCard announced plans to become entangled with Google Wallet (and a few months after those ambitious Isis plans were shelved), it looks as if the aforesaid company is diving into yet another mobile payment arena. And this time, it's personal. MasterCard and CSI Enterprises already offer a smattering of customized business cards for those with highly specific needs, and soon that partnership will extend to iOS, Android and BlackBerry OS. We've confirmed that the CSI Virtual MasterCard app is currently scheduled to launch in July, presumably enabling folks with a GlobalVCard to use their mobile device of choice to make payments. What's interesting here is the inclusion of RI...

Leak reveals Samsung's first Android slider for Verizon
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsSamsungVerizon WirelessGoogleAndroid
PocketNow obtained a couple of leaked photographs of a Samsung device that is apparently the SCH-i405. For the Korean based manufacturer, it will be its first Android flavored device with a side-sliding QWERTY keyboard for Verizon, and has a resemblance to the Samsung Epic 4G that currently resides at Sprint.
The SCH-i405 model number puts the handset right after the Samsung Continuum which means that the specs, when released, probably won't blow your mind. The phone did receive Bluetooth and Wi-Fi certification but has yet to meet the august members of the FCC. That gives us about 6-8 weeks before a possible launch on Verizon. Of course, most of the carrier's customers have their heart and ...

Orange UK will soon start selling two Android smartphones. The first of the two is the HTC Sensation, which we know as the monster phone thanks to its specs that include a dual-core processor, 4.3-inch qHD capacitive touchscreen, 8-megapixel camera, HSPA and Wi-Fi connectivity, an array of sensors and so on. We’ve no doubts Orange will offer the Sensation for free to anyone willing to commit on a plan starting at 30 or 35 GBP a month.
Then there’s the Samsung Galaxy Mini, which for many will be the first smartphone they ever bought. It should cost next to nothing, even free with some not-that-...
