Samsung Replenish getting a small firmware update on July 18?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungReplenish
We don’t have this official confirmed but are still pretty confident Sprint and Samsung will release a small firmware update for the Samsung Replenish. That “small” part means it won’t get Gingerbread to the eco-friendly Android smartphone — rather once the phone is updated, some of the known bugs and issues will be resolved, making the phone run faster. The information comes from AndroidCentral, which managed to get it from the leaked Sprint playbook, confirming the firmware release date is set for July 18th.

LG Optimus Net is an entry-level Gingerbread smartphone
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesLGOptimus Net
Aside from the LG Optimus Pro, the Korean company unveiled another Android smartphone – Optimus Net. From what I can tell, it looks like a successor to the super-popular Optimus One, which is now carried by every major mobile operator in the U.S. and elsewhere. In that sense, we’re talking about a low-to-mid end device that comes with the same 3.2-inch HVGA (320×480 pixels) capacitive touchscreen, 3.2-megapixel camera, HSPA and Wi-Fi connectivity and a memory card slot.

Fifty bucks and a new two-year agreement will net you an Android 2.3 Gingerbread smartphone with a 2.6-inch touchscreen and a portrait QWERTY keyboard. Of course, you also get a special button for all of your Facebooking needs, and HTC has included some Facebook-specific apps with the version of Sense that is installed on the Status. T-Mobile UK's Samsung Galaxy S finally gets the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGalaxy S
I’m not sure why it took so long for T-Mobile UK to finally launch the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the original Samsung Galaxy S. I know carriers like to test firmware updates thoroughly, but I don’t think that’s the excuse. Especially when we know that AT&T’s version of the device (Samsung Captivate) and Sprint’s Samsung Epic 4G already got the same treatment. What’s more, we know that the Android 2.3.4 is in works for unlocked Galaxy S.

The unofficial Gingerbread ROM for the Samsung Galaxy Ace leaked nearly three months ago, but it's only now that Samsung has pushed the official update through Kies in select regions. The first countries to benefit from Samsung's update are Russia and Poland, but others are expected to get it soon as well, according to SamFirmware.

16 of top 20 smartphones are Android powered says latest Media Mix report for June
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
No one can take raw data and come up with as many categories as Millennial Media and its monthly Media Mix report can. Using the number of impressions on the firm's media network, certain rankings can be devised. For example, 16 out of the top 20 phones globally in the June 2011 report are Android powered even with the Apple iPhone listed as number one and the BlackBerry Curve as number two, making 16.19% and 5.57% of impressions on Millennial Media's ad network respectively.

Foursquare promised for N9, updated S40 variant looks to tide you over
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIAN9
Been too long since your last MeeGo fix? Foursquare's stepping in to hold you over with a video of the popular location-based service on Nokia's upcoming N9. While waiting to get your grubby paws all over Elop's miscarriage, indulge yourself in an updated S40 app -- shown running here on a couple Touch-and-Type devices -- which now features tighter Ovi Maps integration and the heretofore omitted "Explore" function. The inclusions, the company reckons, will help those in emerging markets like South America and Asia grow its ten million over-sharing user base. Glimpses of both can be seen beyond the break along with Foursquare's CEO Naveen Selvadurai musing on all things Finnish.

BlackBerry Torch 2 slides through the FCC, bound for AT&T?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesRIM BlackBerryTorch 9810
We've already gotten our grubby little mitts on it, and it looks like soon enough you too will be able to wrap your QWERTY-loving digits around a Torch 2. It looks like the display-centric BlackBerry just slid its way through the FCC, sporting 850MHz and 1900MHz GSM bands, indicating this particular model (listed as RDM71UW) is destined for AT&T. Obviously, even if this is in fact the Torch 2, an FCC filing is not exactly a confirmed release date -- so don't start lining up outside your local AT&T outlet just yet.

Another software update due for the HTC ThunderBolt soon?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTCThunderBolt
Even though the HTC ThunderBolt received its second software update last week (version 1.70.605.0), we've got word from one of our tipsters that another update may only be a couple weeks away.
The customer had contacted Verizon support via e-mail this week due to some issues with their ThunderBolt and was told about a new update that is due out soon. Some of the fixes are to include an issue with SMS/MMS messages going to the wrong contact, Gmail, and to resolve the pesky 4G data connection issue.

Cincinnati Bell rolls out HSPA+ service, speeds past other 4G competition
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
Regional carriers don't often get to brag about their accomplishments. It's even rarer that their services best a handful of wireless industry titans, but Cincinnati Bell's managed to do both with its recent rollout of 4G service. Available to subscribers in the Greater Cincinnati area, the operator's HSPA+ offers download speeds up to 10Mbps -- that's twice as fast as T-Mobile's similar network, as well as 4G from Sprint and AT&T. If you've got an AWS-capable HSPA+ smartphone lying around -- like the HTC Sensation -- now would be the time to unlock it. And don't worry about having a limited service area, the carrier's inked deals with national wireless operators to ensure you cruise the 4G ...
