Nikon announces CoolPix P7100

Posted on Aug 24, 2011 by MG15

Nikon has announced the CoolPix P7100 - an updated version of its P7000 enthusiasts' compact. The P7100 addresses many of the faults that held back its predecessor in our round-up late last year. So, while the specifications improve by gaining an extra control dial and a flip-out LCD, the biggest improvement is to the camera's responsiveness (the image quality never really being in question).

Canon announces PowerShot SX150 IS, ELPH 310 / 510 HS point-and-shoot cams

Posted on Aug 23, 2011 by MG15

It's not every day that we see a new camera hit the market -- it only feels like it is. And today it's Canon's turn in the spotlight. Beefing up its point-and-shoot lineup with a trio of PowerShots, the company just announced its SX150 IS, ELPH 310 HS, and ELPH 510 HS -- that last one is billed as the thinnest camera to include a 12x optical zoom lens with 28mm wide-angle. All three models include a new IS system, Smart Auto with 32 shooting scenes, high-speed burst, and HD video capture. Photographers looking for manual control may want to focus on the $250 14.1 megapixel SX150, which includes aperture- and shutter-priority modes, a discrete-shooting mode, and a 3-inch LCD, but uses a CCD s...

New Sony A77 pictures and specifications leaked

New Sony A77 pictures and specifications leaked

Posted on Aug 23, 2011 by MG15

Pictures of a new Sony Alpha camera boasting a three-way tilt screen have made an appearance on German website D-SLT.

The new cam features a movie mode, in-built mic (or at least a mic grille), GPS and what looks like a decent sized APS-C sensor. Rumoured specifications include things like a whopping 24.3-megapixel Exmor HD sensor, plenty for a camera of its size.

Also impressive is the cam's supposed ISO range which extends all the way up to 16000 thanks to what is said to be a newly developed Bionz processor. The new Bionz hardware also helps the camera shoot at 12fps and have just a 50ms shutter time lag.

Fujifilm X10 may follow X100 with 4X lens, smaller sensor

Fujifilm X10 may follow X100 with 4X lens, smaller sensor

Fujifilm's plans to expand its premium cameras beyond the well-known FinePix X100. Sources maintained Monday that a new model, the X10, would sit in between the DSLR-grade X100 and compacts. The Quesabesde details gave it a two-thirds-of-an-inch sensor in between a Canon G12 and Micro Four Thirds, or enough to help quality but not to rival pro cameras.

It would similarly be the first X-series Fujifilm camera to have real zoom. Photographers would get a 4X real zoom but would still get the X100's f2 aperture at its nearest zoom. The optics would put it into competition with not just the G12 but also the Panasonic LX5, the Olympus XZ-1, and other compacts for experienced shooters.

Shoot first, focus later camera explained

Back in June, Lytro announced it was developing a new camera technology to allow photographers to shoot first, focus later. Using 'light field' technology, the camera would allow for action to be captured quickly as it happens, with the focus point being set later.

We spoke to Lytro to find out more about this interesting technology, which has the potential to change a fundamental area of technology, especially in consumer compact cameras.

The idea for the shoot first, focus later camera first came to Lytro's CEO and founder Dr Ren Ng while writing his dissertation for a computer science degree. While photographing a friend's 5-year-old, he realised the limits of digital cameras when shoot...

Having previously caught a glimpse of Sony's upcoming NEX-7, it was only a matter of time before we saw the whole enchilada. Ostensibly, the 1080p / 24fps shooter also wields a magnesium alloy body, integrated flash and a new auto locking hot shoe. We have a feeling it won't be too long before this puppy becomes official...
