Another Galaxy S II passes through the FCC, possibly rockin' a Tegra 2

Another Galaxy S II passes through the FCC, possibly rockin' a Tegra 2

Posted on Jul 06, 2011 by MG1

What we have here appears to be some variation of the Samsung Galaxy S II, with support for 850MHz and 1900MHz GSM frequencies, making its way through the FCC. Now, we know what you're thinking, "didn't we already see an AT&T ready S II?" Yep, but this one sports a different model number -- GT-I9103, and you know where we've seen that before? Those mysterious Tegra 2-equipped Galaxy S II benchmarks. The rumblings of Sammy's flagship handset coming in two versions, one rocking NVIDIA's mobile chip, aren't without precedent -- Exynos is still fairly young silicon and this could be a way to boost supplies (as we put it, in the most politically correct terms possible) "outside its critical marke...

Google+ sneaks NFC into its Android app, gets caught red-handed

Google+ sneaks NFC into its Android app, gets caught red-handed

Posted on Jul 06, 2011 by MG1

NFC is gradually turning to the social side, thanks to new functionality found within the Google+ app for Android. Software developer Ridzuan Ashim discovered that, when used on an NFC-enabled device, you can read tags and share them through the new social networking service. After scanning, the OS asks you if you want to share the associated text with Google+ or another relevant program. Though the abilities seem somewhat limited for now, we'll likely see more developer support tossed in as the service matures. Using NFC in this way could lead us into a group Huddle, check us in at a restaurant and share it with our Circles, and perhaps even add us into somebody's Circle or Hangout. It's on...

Apple Responds to Samsung's ITC Complaint In Kind

Apple Responds to Samsung's ITC Complaint In Kind

Posted on Jul 06, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: SamsungApple

Apple filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission on July 5 seeking to block the import of certain devices made by Samsung that Apple feels violate its designs and patents. Samsung filed a similar complaint with the ITC last week, seeking to prevent Apple from importing the iPhone and iPad into the U.S. The ITC complaints are the lastest part of an on-going patent battle between the two companies that started when Apple filed a lawsuit against Samsung in April, alleging that Samsung has brazenly copied Apple's products for financial gain. If the ITC agrees to investigate the complaints, a hearing likely won't be scheduled for more than a year.

Google, MapQuest, Microsoft and Aol sued for allegedly infringing 3D mapping patent

Posted on Jul 06, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: MicrosoftGoogle

The saga continues for Google's voyeuristic mapping service, but this time Microsoft Streetside and Aol's MapQuest 360 View may be the Bonnie to Street View's Clyde. Transcenic, Inc. is suing the tech giants for acquiring the tools necessary to offer 3D mapping by less-than-legitimate means. The Louisiana-based company alleges that all named parties borrowed, without permission, a bit from a patent it owns on a 3D cartography technology that captures spatial reference images and uses a database to navigate them on command. Google has been in hot water for its maps before, but it no doubt hopes this legal tiff ends as well as its one for trespassing, where it only paid a pack of gum's worth o...

It looks like Google is about to rebrand acquisitions Picasa and Blogger under its own Google products name.
Mashable is reporting that the search engine giant plans on retiring the older brand names, renaming them Google Photos and Google Blogs. Google is likely attempting some serious brand unification in preparation for the full launch of its Google+ service.
Expect the transition to Google Photos and Blogs to occur in the next 6 weeks, timed conveniently with the rumoured launch of Google+. Mashable is pointing to a pre 31 July public launch, an important date which will see all Google profiles required to be public.
Currently Picasa and Blogger are two of Google's most popular servic...

PayPal Twitter hack leaves customers concerned

PayPal Twitter hack leaves customers concerned

Posted on Jul 06, 2011 by MG1

PayPal UK has joined Fox News in the unfortunate club of firms who’ve had their Twitter accounts hacked. At around 8pm last night, an unknown individual with a grudge against PayPal took over the @paypaluk account and began sending a stream of angry tweets including a link to long-time anti-PayPal site, PayPal Sucks. With the help of Twitter support staff the company regained control of the account at around midnight.
PayPal immediately tweeted to reassure customers that they’re data and, more importantly, their cash is safe and sound: “This account was hacked earlier. We have it in our control now. Your personal data is still 100% safe, hack occurred on Twitter not PayPal.” However, a look ...

U.S. Claims Jurisdiction Over All .com and .net Domains

U.S. Claims Jurisdiction Over All .com and .net Domains

Posted on Jul 06, 2011 by MG1

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency believes it has the authority to shut down any and all .com and .net websites that run afoul of copyright law, even if the site's servers are hosted overseas. Erik Barnett, the agency's assistant deputy director, told the U.K.'s Guardian that ICE will seek to shut down overseas sites it believes are breaking U.S. copyright law and attempt to extradite website owners. Has ICE found a legal loophole?

Perhaps it has. The reason ICE feels its authority extends to any .com and .net domain overseas is because they're all routed through Verisign, a registry service based in Virginia. As far as Barnett is concerned, that alone gives ICE the ...

Sony briefly took down the PlayStation Network late Tuesday afternoon in a surprise move. The unannounced shutdown caught users off-guard forcing them to install an additional security fix. Gamers who tried to access their network accounts were greeted with this error message: “An error has occurred. You have been signed out of PlayStation Network. (80710016). Please wait." Following the outage, Sony posted a message on its support pages that tells users that to regain access, they will need to install a new firmware update and create a new password.

Anonymous Agent Threatens Mayor of Orlando

Anonymous Agent Threatens Mayor of Orlando

Posted on Jul 06, 2011 by MG1

The hacker vendetta against the City of Orlando took a strange twist into the real world yesterday, WESH reports, as a Twitter account claiming affiliation with the group posted a photo outside Mayor Buddy Dyer's house. Creepy? Definitely.
The pic, showing a trademark Anonymous mask hanging from a street sign outside the mayor's residence, sends a pretty unequivocal message: We know where you live. The photo follows an earlier tweet saying "Hey smiling Buddy Dyer someone in #OpOrlando has a message for you sir: Pew Pew Pew." Again, somewhat ominous (albiet pretty sophomoric). Although there's no way to definitively verify that the @OpOrlando2011 account is officially tied to Anonymous—in the...

HTC Marvel Hits FCC, Heading For T-Mobile

Posted on Jul 06, 2011 by MG1

Back in May, a leaked T-Mobile roadmap revealed a wide variety of delicious smartphones waiting to come out of the oven. One of the handsets getting close to making its entry is the HTC Marvel that’s slated for a July 15th launch. The handset has just passed through the FCC, indicating it should be right on time.
The HTC Marvel is essentially the T-Mobile version of the HTC Wildfire S for which we did a full review back in April. The FCC documents label the handset as only PG76240 and indicate that the device will sport T-Mobile’s GSM and WCDMA bands.

The new video is called Going smoothly and shows off the two tablets communicating autonomously through a native e-mail app.
It's possible that by the time the fifth video is released, the tablets will be ready for release. If the gaps between them remains consistent at nearly two weeks, that would put the release at roughly mid-August.
The tablets are powered by Android 3.0 and the S1 will have a 9.4-inch touchscreen and Tegra 2 processor, while the S2 will have a folding design and two 5.5-inch scr...
