Google Maps 5.7 for Android brings Transit Navigation beta, updated access to directions

Good news, jetsetters -- those of you relying on Google Maps Navigation will now find it even harder to wean yourself off of it. Not like we'd ever recommend that, though. The navigators in Mountain View have just updated Google Maps for Android to v5.7, and while it's just a point update in terms of numbers, there's a healthy chunk of new material here. For starters, there's the addition of added Transit Navigation (Beta), which brings GPS turn-by-turn (or in this case, stop-by-stop) navigation to public transit systems in 400+ cities worldwide. It'll tap into your GPS module to determine your current location, and then alert you when it's time to get off or make a transfer -- downright inv...

Facebook Skype video calling not coming to mobile yet

Facebook Skype video calling not coming to mobile yet

Posted on Jul 07, 2011 by MG1

Facebook just made a big announcement that it would be teaming with Skype to provide free, one-to-one video calling on the world’s largest social network but you won’t be able to use this feature in the mobile apps yet.
The Facebook Skype video calling service was the major feature of today’s announcement but it also included the ability to chat with Groups and a redesign of the chat bar to better take advantage of a user’s screen. Because there is limited screen space, the redesign won’t be coming to mobile either but the Group chatting feature should be available in the mobile apps soon.
The Facebook Skype integration does look pretty good, as it appears simple and easy to click on a perso...

Motorola Xoom WiFi price cut to $499 - Slow sales or Xoom 2 coming?

Motorola Xoom WiFi price cut to $499 - Slow sales or Xoom 2 coming?

Posted on Jul 07, 2011 by MG1

The price of the Motorola Xoom WiFi has been cut seemingly everywhere, no longer making Costco the go-to place for the first Honeycomb tablet. You can now grab the Xoom for only $499 in most places and even cheaper at Staples.
The Motorola Store, Amazon, and Staples now carry the tablet for the new $499 price point and the latter has a coupon code that will shave off an extra $50 from the overall price (51758). It took Moto long enough to bring the tablet’s pricing down but we’re wondering if it’s whether the competition is besting the Xoom, or if the price cut is a sign of things to come.

Unfortunately, the ad doesn't confirm the launch date or reveal a clue about pricing. The phrase "Coming Soon" is placed under the picture of the heavily anticipated phone.
This leaked ad allegedly shows off the long awaited Motorola DROID Bionic
Originally shown to the public at the CES, Motorola pulled the original DROID Bionic and replaced it with a whole new model and a delayed launch. The specs of the device have been rumored to be all over the place. We had told you about a tweet from Motorola th...

Anyone with a touchscreen smartphone knows that battery life is something you have to constantly keep an eye on. Regardless of the model of phone, or OS you may be running, chances are that at some point or another you've looked into ways to make your battery last longer, even if it's just a matter of carrying a charging cable with you at all times. As smartphones get more powerful, and users can do more, battery life will keep taking more hits. Microsoft sees this, and has built Batter Saver settings into Windows Phone 7 Mango.
If you're an Android user, you know that there are dozens if not hundreds of apps dedicated to squeezing more juice out of your battery. Most include turning off ce...

First — for a limited time — anyone who signs up will get unlimited space for music. That includes users who signs up for the minimum $20/year 20GB plan. Second, Amazon has announced that Cloud Drive customers can now store all MP3s purchased from the Amazon MP3 music store for free — that includes those that were bought before Amazon launched the Cloud Drive and Cloud Player services, and your tunes don’t count against the overall storage count. First OTA update hits non-carrier branded HTC Sensation units in Europe

Posted on Jul 07, 2011 by MG1

Needless to say, there are some happy HTC Sensation owners in Europe that are exuberant about the handset's loveliness, but for those affected by the stifling problem of lag with its performance, they’re going to be glad to see hear that some owners are seeing better results after installing a new software update.
Although it doesn’t necessarily bring along anything dramatic, this 27MB over-the-air update for non-carrier branded HTC Sensation units in Europe is being pushed out as we speak. Naturally, it brings the handset up to software version 1.35.401.1 and carries along some additional bug fixes with it. Moreover, we’re sure that handset owners are more interested about seeing an unlock...

Sony Ericsson's Xperia Play, arc, neo and pro to get updated to Android 2.3.4 soon?

Posted on Jul 06, 2011 by MG1

Sony's quartet of high-end Android smartphones including the Xperia arc, play, neo and pro might just have gotten updated to Android 2.3.3, but the engineers over at SE are already testing and working on delivering the latest version of Android Gingerbread, 2.3.4, according to an unspecified source quoted by SE-centric Semcblog. The update will bring bug fixes, but it will also patch some security holes and add new functionalities like Sony's audio filtering xLOUD technology to the handsets. It's expected to roll out widely in October.
The latest Gingerbread is not coming to earlier models like the X10 mini, X10 mini pro or the X8, but we already know that an unspecified version of Gingerbre...

Best Buy now offers Wi-Fi only HTC Flyer with stylus for $499.99

Looking to grab yourself the HTC Flyer but don’t want a carrier (Sprint) contract? There’s the Wi-Fi only version which up until this point was available for $499.99 via Best Buy. There was one caveat though – that money didn’t get you the stylus, which the electronics retailer sold separately for $79.99. In total you had to pour out $580 for the combined package. That’s a lot of money and although we love Flyer, we’re not sure pretty confident it’s not worth it. Heck even $500 is a lot of money, but then again there still isn’t that many options in the 7-inch tablet market. Hopefully that will change soon, but in the meantime – those of you with the cash and urgent need to spend it can proc...

Huawei in trouble with the government again, this time in Taiwan

Huawei in trouble with the government again, this time in Taiwan

Posted on Jul 06, 2011 by MG1

Huawei may be the world’s second largest provider of infrastructure equipment, but the fact that they’re a Chinese company has done them more harm than good when it comes to the interests of national security in the United States and India. Both of those countries have banned operators from using Huawei gear, and now it looks like a third nation is set to outlaw their hardware: Taiwan. According to the Taipei Times, the National Communications Commission (NCC) of Taiwan has decreed that telecommunications operators can no longer use technology supplied by Huawei. The operators that will be impacted by this decision include Asia-Pacific Telecom, Vibo, Taiwan Mobile and Far EasTone Telecommuni...

Microsoft Wants $15 from Samsung For Each Android Phone

Posted on Jul 06, 2011 by MG1

Microsoft has demanded that Samsung pay it $15 in licensing fees for each Android-based smartphone that it sells. Microsoft owns a number of patented technologies used in Google's mobile operating system, and has been seeking fees from Android handset makers. HTC and other phone makers have reached agreements with Microsoft over the patented technology. Reuters reports that Samsung will push to reduce the per-handset charge to $10 in conjunction with new agreements regarding Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 platform. Samsung has sold millions of smartphones based on Android.

Developers looking to attack mobile app segments where they might have the best chance of scoring big with smartphone users would be well served to take notice of Nielsen’s latest findings. The market research firm on Wednesday published some findings from its Mobile Insights and Mobile Apps Playbook reports for the second quarter of 2011, and “Games” was once again the most popular app category. In the second quarter, 64% of app downloaders — smartphone users surveyed who had downloaded an app within the past 30 days — reported having downloaded at least one game over the past 30 days, just ahead of weather apps at 60% and social networking apps at 56%. What’s more, a whopping 93% of app do...

Apple iPhone 5 be thinner, lighter than current model according to WSJ

Apple iPhone 5 be thinner, lighter than current model according to WSJ

Posted on Jul 06, 2011 by MG1

The Wall Street Journal is singing a new tune Wednesday morning, reaffirming parts of an earlier BGR report suggesting that Apple is preparing to release a redesigned iPhone 5 later this year. Citing anonymous sources in Apple’s supply chain, the paper reports this morning that Apple has placed component orders with key suppliers for fifth-generation iPhone parts. As has already been widely reported, Apple’s next iPhone is said to feature an 8-megapixel camera and Qualcomm radios. The report veers away from the consensus in suggesting that Apple’s next iPhone will not share its design with the current iPhone 4, however, and will instead be thinner and lighter than the current model. BGR repo...

Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer HTC has made a move to purchase S3 Graphics from parent company VIA and an investment firm. S3 Graphics develops graphics visualization technologies that are used in PCs, video game consoles, and mobile devices.
S3 recently made the news in a patent lawsuit against Apple that ended with the court ruling in S3 Graphics' favor on two counts. The $300 million that HTC is spending on S3 Graphics buys it the entire company, with its experienced team of developers, along with a suite of patents and intellectual property relating to graphics development.

Microsoft demands $15 for every Samsung-made Android smartphone

Microsoft demands $15 for every Samsung-made Android smartphone

Posted on Jul 06, 2011 by MG1

Taking the highly competitive smartphone market into perspective, one would assume that Android's steady growth would be a bad thing for Microsoft and its Windows Phone platform. However, this may not be necessarily true as the company is actually raking in some big money from other manufacturers' Android-powered devices.
HTC, for example, has to pay royalties to Microsoft for each Android device sold due to the fact that the latter holds a number of patents involved in Google's platform. However, the $5 per device sold, which Microsoft is getting from HTC, seem nothing compared to the $15 per device that the maker of Windows Mobile has just demanded from Samsung.
If we take only the Samsung...
