Apple App Store Downloads to Grow 61 Percent, Analyst Says
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Purchases from Apple's App Store are expected to grow 61 percent this year as more and more consumers look for a rewarding app store experience when buying a new device, according to a Monday report.
The average iOS device user will download 83 apps in 2011, up 61 percent from 51 in 2010, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster wrote in a note to investors.
"We believe this trend points to the increasing importance of an app store with a broad selection of tested apps to drive device sales," Munster wrote. "Smartphone users are showing an increasing appetite to use apps to add features to their phones, and iOS has the leading app ecosystem."
Those downloads will also include paid apps; app purcha...

Google to keep Blogger brand after all
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Last week there was talk that Google would soon be retiring several non-Google name brands, such as Blogger and Picasa, sometime next month. The replacements would include Google Blogs and Google Photos, respectively. The search giant reportedly wants to keep the Blogger brand after all, a source familiar with Google's Blogger division told GigaOM.
If we had to pick between the two, Picasa makes more sense to rebrand. Blogger, which Google acquired in February 2003 and is one of the top 10 most visited websites in the world, is perhaps one of the strongest brands on the Internet. It's not clear if Google Blogs could match Blogger's level of recognition.

iRiver Story HD becomes first Google eBooks-integrated e-reader, won't be the last
Like UnlikeFiled in: Ebook ReadersiriverStory HD
We aren't exactly lacking for digital bookstores, but Google's eBooks offering is indeed one of the slickest around. And evidently, it's not in nearly as many places as the marketers in Mountain View would like. The Goog just announced that iRiver's Story HD would soon become the first Google eBooks-integrated e-reader, with the new model going on sale July 17th at Target. It'll still sell for $139.99, and none of the actual hardware specifications will change from the existing model. Of course, the eBooks platform has been open to all publishers, retailers and manufacturers from the start; it's just that iRiver has become the first manufacturer to heed the call. Naturally, Google's teasing ...

Facebook Deactivates Open-Xchange, Blocks Personal Data Migration
Like UnlikeAlthough the recently announced Google+ social platform is still in private beta, it has generated enough excitement to have Facebook making some preemptive measures. Over the weekend, another personal data migration tool, Open-Xchange, has also been deactivated.

Anonymous Leaks 90,000 Military Email Accounts in Latest #AntiSec Attack
Like UnlikeBooz Allen Hamilton is a massive American consulting firm that does a substantial amount of work for the Pentagon. This means they've got a lot of military business on their servers—which Anonymous hacked. Today they've leaked it.
The leak, dubbed 'Military Meltdown Monday,' includes 90,000 logins of military personnel—including personnel from US CENTCOM, SOCOM, the Marine Corps, various Air Force facilities, Homeland Security, State Department staff, and what looks like private sector contractors. Their correspondences could include exchanges with Booz Allen's highly brassy staff of retired defense folk: current execs include three former Directors of National Intelligence and one former he...

Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 7
Ballmer has said that Windows 8, the company’s next version of its operating system will be the “dawning of Windows slates,” at the company’s annual Worldwide Partners Conference.
Taking to the stage to talk all things Microsoft, including admitting that Windows Phone 7 sales are still small, the CEO said of the new OS:
"Windows 8 really does represent a true re-imagining of Windows PCs and the dawning of Windows slates."
But it’s not all future, future, future. Ballmer also used the conference to also confirm that the company had sold over 400 million Windows 7 licences around the world, and find time to take a pop at Apple and Linux:
"We're selling a lot of Windows and we've got a lot of c...

Cisco set to slash 10,000 jobs
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cisco
Cisco is reportedly preparing to reduce its workforce by approximately 14 percent, a move that may eliminate 10,000 positions. The company is said to be planning 7,000 layoffs by the end of August, while early-retirement incentives will be offered to another 3,000 employees, unnamed sources have told Bloomberg.
The workforce reductions are said to be part of a broader strategy to bolster profits as the company loses market share to its competitors. The sources suggest CEO John Chambers is also planning to shift the company's focus away from business segments that are struggling to make profits.
Cisco recently killed its Flip efforts following lackluster sales of the small video cameras. Ana...

Barnes & Noble NOOK Color leads eReader market for first time ever, IDC states
Like UnlikeFiled in: Ebook ReadersBarnes & NobleNOOKcolor
IDC recently published a report that provided a snapshot view of the tablet and eReader markets. The company noted that in the first quarter, for the first time ever, Barnes & Noble’s NOOK Color lead the eReader pack ahead of Amazon’s Kindle. Even though Barnes & Noble just introduced the “all new NOOK,” a black and white device, IDC says that the lack of a color screen on Amazon’s Kindle “clearly impacted the company’s previous dominance in the eReader market.” The research firm also found that the eReader market declined to just 2.2 million units shipped in the first quarter, and said that the “post-holiday season proved to be challenging” for the eReader market. IDC still expects the glob...

NTT DoCoMo to power cellphone towers with renewable energy, tenderness
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
When they're not busy carving handsets out of teak (or rockin' out with their pupils), the folks over at NTT DoCoMo apparently focus their efforts on saving the environment. Next year, the Japanese provider will begin outfitting its expansive cellphone tower network with ten "green transmission stations," to be powered by an artillery of biofuels, wind and solar energy. This kind of infrastructure would obviously bring a smile to the face of ol' Mama Nature, but it could also help mitigate the adverse effects of power outages and elfin insurgents. And for that, we should all be grateful.

1 million third-party apps now support Twitter
Like UnlikeTwitter has announced that there are now over 1 million third-party apps from 750,000 developers registered to use the service. A new app gets registered every 1.5 seconds. Just one year ago, the platform laid claim to 150,000 third-party apps, so the growth is truly tremendous. In response to this growth, Twitter has set up a new developer website to help new and seasoned developers alike get help with their apps and connect with Twitter engineers. This is in stark contrast to the stance Twitter took just a few months ago, when it requested that developers no longer duplicate services already covered by Twitter's in-house apps.

Sprint users unable to send texts around the country today?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
A tweet sent by Sprint Care in response to nationwide reports about an SMS outage for the carrier says that Sprint is now aware of the outage. The message continues that Sprint Care is working to restore texting service as soon as possible. Earlier, messages sent in the Sprint Community Forum revealed a nationwide problem for the nation's third largest carrier. Users were able to receive text messages, but when trying to respond to a text or start a new thread, a 2128 error code would show up.
So far, we have read complaints from Sprint users in Minnesota, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Houston and other cities. Any Sprint customers out there still getting the 2128 error code? Has Sprint made the n...

Google’s chairman and former CEO Eric Schmidt has agreed to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee’s antitrust subcommittee, Reuters reported on Monday. On June 24th, Google announced that the Federal Trade Commission would be reviewing its business practices. The search giant said it was “still unclear” as to what the FTC’s concerns were but that it would cooperate fully with the investigation. Watchdog groups such as Fairsearch.org have repeatedly accused Google of eangaging in anti-competitive behavior. “I look forward to discussing a number of important issues relating to Google and Internet search competition,” Senator Mike Lee, the lead Republican on the Judiciary Committee’s an...
