Did the Samsung Triumph just pass through the FCC?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsung
The FCC has given the green light to yet another handset, and judging by the clues that we managed to spot while digging through the filing, it seems like we are dealing with no other device than the rumored Samsung Triumph.
How do we know? Well, the strongest clue that we came across is the fact that the handset is listed with its SGH-T379 model name, which gets pretty close to the Samsung t379 Triumph that was mentioned in a leaked T-Mobile roadmap not long ago. In case if you are wondering, the device in the filing does support T-Mobile's frequencies and can even run on the carrier's 3G pipelines at theoretical speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps. Some of the other goodies that it sports are a side...

Google Talk getting real-time video calls image stabilization in Android Honeycomb devices
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid 3.0
Google Talk on Honeycomb tablets is receiving image stabilization during video calls, which should help with jerky picture while moving or walking around. The system is being provided by SRI, a California-based non-profit research institute, whose inventions range from the ultrasound to automatic checks processing. It's been about 10 years in the making, but only now are mobile devices powerful enough to allow for the software to work in real time.
The folks at SRI explain the magic behind the video image stabilization that is to grace Google Talk on your Android Honeycomb slate:
"Video chat applications capture video from the front-facing camera on smartphones and tablets. Once an image is ...

The old-new device is available from Sizz, which is a Vodafone and RTL-backed operator. The carrier is giving away the smartphone to anyone willing to commit on a contract. There are quite a few plans to choose from, plus anyone who jumps on board will also get a 60 EUR voucher. Alternatively, there’s the option to pay 150 EUR upfront with a cheaper plan.

HP's Stephen DeWitt takes over webOS, Rubinstein to focus on product innovation
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsHPPalmwebOS
Things haven't been exactly flourishing at HP's webOS division in the last year since the company acquired Palm as reception for both the HP Veer and the HP TouchPad has been lukewarm. And now a major shuffle at the top executive level aims to bring change: HP's Stephen DeWitt takes over webOS replacing Jon Rubinstein, who will now “assume a product innovation role.” But that's not all – HP seems to be also ditching the name Palm completely by renaming the division to “webOS Global Business Unit.”
DeWitt is a sales guy – he has been credited for improving sales and profitability of HP's Personal Systems Group, but he will also be responsible for overseeing R&D and marketing. HP will also try...

Netflix raises prices, intros new plans
Like UnlikeNetflix announced two new unlimited DVD plans on Tuesday, including a $7.99 option for one DVD at a time and an $11.99 option that allows users to rent two DVDs at a time. The company also said that it will discontinue its current $9.99 monthly option that provides access to unlimited DVD rentals and unlimited instant streaming each month. Instead, the movie rental service will charge users $7.99 a month for unlimited streaming and a minimum of $7.99 per month for unlimited DVDs (with one rented out at a time at that rate). Essentially, that means users with the current $9.99 offering will instead have to cough up $15.98 per month in order to maintain their current subscription plan. “Reflec...

HP plans major enterprise push for TouchPad
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksHPTouchPad
HP straddles two worlds: enterprise systems and consumer electronics. Its new TouchPad tablet is intended to satisfy the needs of both. But you'll have to look harder and wait longer to see HP's unfolding enterprise plan for TouchPad.
The Wi-Fi TouchPad, running the WebOS firmware created by Palm, goes on sale Friday starting at $500 in stores ranging from Amazon to Walmart, the same outlets that handle its PCs and printers. But the tablet is "enterprise ready," says HP's David Gee, vice president of marketing and enterprise solution for the Palm Global Business Unit. He oversees the marketing strategy for all WebOS devices as well as development of WebOS-based "solutions" for business custo...

Bowers & Wilkins gets into in-ear headphones with steady C5s
Like UnlikeFiled in: HeadphonesBowers & Wilkins (B&W)C5
Bowers & Wilkins broke from its focus on external audio Monday through launching the C5s. The in-ear headphones are tailored to runners with a new 'secure loop' that should keep the buds in an ideal position rather than gradually slip out. Even the weighting, made of tungsten, is designed to keep the design comfortable by balancing them towards the head rather than away from it, the company said.
A micro porous filter helps recreate some of the effect of open speakers by diffusing the sound even as it cuts back on the amount of outside noise getting in. The C5s have a wide 10Hz to 20kHz frequency range, a 32ohm impedance, and a 118dB signal to noise ratio. Bowers & Wilkins, as a regular iOS ...

LG Optimus Pro unveiled
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesLGOptimus Pro
A new Android-powered handset has been spotted in the form of LG’s Optimus Pro which is a slab style device that packs a QWERTY keyboard below the screen.
The Optimus Pro runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Given the form factor of this smartphone, screen size had to be sacrificed as evidenced by the 2.8-inch QVGA display. The Optimus Pro also packs a 3 megapixel camera on the back.
The Optimus Pro is more than likely an attempt to lure BlackBerry customers to Android much like the similarly built Motorola Droid Pro did. There isn’t any other specs on this device yet and we don’t know about planned availability, although this phone is apparently on sale in Italy already.

Google Apps Users Promised Google+ Access Someday
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
It is nothing new for users of Google Apps. A cool new Google service comes out, but they can’t access it. These dedicated users have been clamoring for access to Google+ (like half of the Internet seems to be), but Apps access to the social network is not happening. According to Google’s president of enterprise, they’re working on it, though.
Google tends to roll out new features and service to paid Google Apps users slowly. Part of the deal, and what users expect, is that Apps will have a certain uptime and reliability guarantee. So Google often delays beta products for Apps. But in the case of Google+, they may be adopting an accelerated timetable for the rollout.
We know that Google is ...

IBM announces computer memory breakthrough
Like UnlikeFiled in: IBM
IBM Thursday announced a breakthrough in computer memory technology, which may lead to the development of solid-state chips that can store as much data as NAND flash technology but with 100 times the performance and vastly greater lifespan.
Currently, NAND flash memory products, such as SSDs, have write rates as high as 2Gbps.

IBM said it has produced phase-change memory (PCM) chips that can store two bits of data per cell without data corruption problems, something that has plagued PCM development from the start.
