LTE Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 pre-orders shipping on the 26th
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsSamsungGALAXY Tab 10.1 LTE
Well, it may not have launched this past Thursday but the LTE-equipped Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 pre-orders look to begin shipping on Tuesday, the 26th. This could mean that the powerful Honeycomb tablet could also become available in Verizon stores later in the week.
The super thin Android tablet should be quite the hit now that it has the nation’s fastest network underneath the hood. Of course, you’re gonna have to pay to play but that may be a non-issue for some. We loved the WiFi versions of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and having LTE added in just makes it that much more appealing. While the tablet is still lacking the Android 3.2 update that the Motorola Xoom just received, we’d still pick Samsun...

Customers sue AT&T to block T-Mobile acquisition
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesT-MobileAT&T
A handful of AT&T’s customers are now fighting against its planned acquisition of T-Mobile. Law firm Bursor & Fisher filed lawsuits against AT&T on behalf of 11 AT&T subscribers in an effort to block the merger, AllThingsD reported on Friday. The lawyers have created a pitch site titled FightTheMerger.com and argue that The Clayton Antitrust Act gives “anyone who may be affected by a proposed merger” the power to sue in a federal court. “Government enforcement is an important part of the antitrust laws, but the Clayton Act also permits private parties who may be adversely affected to challenge a proposed merger,” one of the lawyers, Scott Bursor, said. “That means any AT&T cellphone, data or...

Retina Display coming to Apple's next iPad according to LG Display CEO
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksLGAppleiPad 3
Apple’s next-generation iPad will employ the company’s famous Retina Display according to LG Display CEO Young Soo Kwon. The Korea Times reported on Friday that Kwon let slip the news while speaking with reporters following LG Display’s second-quarter earnings report, which saw the manufacturer’s profit tumble 96%. “[Kwon] said more smartphone manufacturers will release new models employing LG’s “Retina Display’’ that has been used in iPhones and iPads,” The Korea Times’ report states. LG Display manufactures the current Retina Display found on Apple’s iPhone 4 handset. Earlier reports suggest Apple is preparing to launch an updated iPad in September alongside the iPhone 5. The new Retina Di...

Leak: LG Fantasy looks a bit like the HTC HD7
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesLGFantasy
Pocketnow have managed to lay their hands on LG’s fall line-up, revealing amongst a bevy of Android handsets a single Windows Phone 7 handset, the LG Fantasy.
No specs accompanied the rendering, but the device appears to have a near edge to edge screen and similar styling to the HC HD7, suggesting to me that it will likely be a premium large-screened handset.
How do our readers feel about the design compared to LG’s previous lower-end looking devices? Let us know below.

Nokia's heartbreaking results yesterday might have toned down your expectations for the company, but a bit of sunshine broke through the clouds over Finland as now it's clear how much the company will get in licensing fees from Apple. Cupertino settled for an undisclosed amount in a patent lawsuit last month, and judging from Nokia's patent-related licensing earning for the quarter, the sum is $616 million (430 million euro).
It's not clear whether all of that comes from Apple, but it's likely tha...

Verizon's iPhone 4 activations slow significantly in Q2
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleVerizon WirelessiPhone 4 Verizon
Activations of Apple’s popular iPhone 4 handset slowed significantly at Verizon Wireless last quarter. The nation’s No. 1 carrier reported its second-quarter earnings early Friday morning, at which time it revealed its latest iPhone numbers. Verizon Wireless activated 2.3 million iPhone 4 units in its June quarter for an average of just under 177,000 phones each week. In the first quarter, Verizon Wireless activated 2.2 million iPhones, but the device had been available for just seven weeks in the quarter. During that period, the carrier was activating an average of more than 315,000 devices each week. It stands to reason that iPhone 4 sales would slow following the device’s debut with the c...

Verizon promotes Lowell McAdam to CEO, Ivan Seidenberg stays on as Chairman
Like UnlikeFiled in: Verizon Wireless
Ivan Seidenberg, the man who took the helm as Big Red steered its ship into the iPhone's waters, is stepping down as CEO effective August 1st, the completion of a succession plan that's been underway since last year. His replacement? Current President Lowell McAdam, who helped lead the charge to bring Apple's smartphone to the company's subscribers -- and who proudly stood on stage with Apple's Tim Cook to announce it. Seidenberg will remain Chairman for the time being to help aid in the transition, and while we're not sure for just how long that will be, we wonder if maybe he's not just waiting to pick up a Bionic before heading out.

Nokia leaves out mobile wallet support from newest NFC-equipped phones
Like UnlikeFiled in: NOKIA
Proponents of mobile payment systems shouldn't look to Nokia for devices to support NFC mobile payments, as the Finnish company has announced that its latest devices that have NFC chips will not support mobile wallets. The issue is at the hardware level, as the new phones don't have the secure chip required for mobile payment systems.
The C7 and N9 smartphones will not be able to be used with mobile payment systems because Nokia designed them before there was a standard in place for the secure chips necessary. Instead of the secure NFC chips, the C7 and N9 have an open NFC chip that can be used with NFC tags and Bluetooth pairing.
The head of sales, service, and marketing at Nokia UK and Ire...

Still unannounced HTC Ruby caught on Flickr
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTCArrive
We’re pretty confident HTC (and other handset makers for that matter) are constantly working on new products. From time to time we manage to get some leaked image before the company officially announces the device and that’s when we turn to you, our dear readers, to share any new information we have.
That said, today we spotted a new HTC phone, codenamed Ruby, on Flickr. We don’t have all the details, quite the contrary, except the reflections of the handset on the HTC Flyer’s screen. From that “not too revealing” (to say the least) photo we see that Ruby will come with a 3.5mm headset jack, camera with dual-LED flash and… that’s about it. We’ve no idea whether it will run Android or Windows...

Verizon Q2 earnings top estimates; CEO will step down
Like UnlikeFiled in: Verizon Wireless
Verizon Communications on Friday reported second-quarter earnings that topped the Street’s estimates, though it failed to match AT&T’s impressive wireless growth during the quarter. Revenue climbed to $27.5 billion in the June quarter, up 2.8% from the same quarter last year. EPS was up 6 cents sequentially to $0.57, a huge swing from the second quarter in 2010 when Verizon reported a loss of $0.42 per share. In wireless, the carrier netted 2.2 million subscribers — or “total connections,” rather — excluding gains made through acquisitions, and service revenues climbed 6.6% year-over-year. Verizon now reports total connections, which include machine to machine devices and other non-standard ...

Google adds multiple APK support to Android Market
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
Google has enabled a new feature in the Android Market that should make the lives of developers and users a bit easier. Developers can now list multiple APKs (the file type for Android apps) under the same app name in the Android Market. This will allow for both tablet and smartphone versions of an app to be listed under the same name.
When a user downloads an app that has multiple versions attached to it, the Android Market will provide the appropriate version of the app for the user's device, whether that be a smartphone or a tablet.
This will make it easier for users, as they will not have to separately purchase the tablet version and smartphone version of the same app to use it on multip...

Nokia N9 pops up at the FCC with photos and user manual in tow
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIAN9
Are you one of those smartphone enthusiasts crossing their fingers in hope that the Nokia N9 makes it to the US? Well, none of the nation's major carriers has officially expressed any interest in offering it, but here is something that slightly raises the chances of the N9 touching US soil after all. Nokia's first MeeGo-powered smartphone has cleared the FCC, and like the case is with most handsets that make it through, both external and internal photos are available accompanied by a complete user manual.
Digging through the filing we see something that was pretty much expected, namely that the Nokia N9 boasts support for pentaband 3G connectivity – just like any self-respecting world smartp...

BlackBerry PlayBook Android App player leaks, brings thousands of apps from the Market
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsTabletsRIM BlackBerryGoogleAndroidPlayBook
RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook features a handful of apps, but we've been teased with the promise of Android app support for months. And now we seem closer than ever to the final version as a beta of the BlackBerry PlayBook Android app player leaked out. The application was found through a changelog in an update to the Desktop Manager and tech blog N4BB has been sent an old beta build which might not have the final interface (there's no back button, so you have to swipe on the bezel at the bottom to go back), but it works.
Ironically, the app player is based on Android Gingerbread 2.3.3, a version that's only available on a few phones yet. That should translate into support for the more than 200,...

Qualcomm chip shipment forecast lower than expected, Europe to blame
Like UnlikeQualcomm said it expects to ship between 120 million and 125 million chips during the quarter ending in September, a figure that is lower than the 130 million units MLM Partners LLC analyst Tero Kuittinen expected the company to move. The lower projection hit Qualcomm in late trading on Tuesday when its stock price fell 3.8%. Qualcomm blamed the lower than expected forecast on a weak European economy and said that consumers there aren’t buying new phones as quickly. “Chip units for autumn are light,” Qualcomm chief financial officer Bill Keitel said during a conference call. “The blame likely lies in Europe. European inventory correction now seems to be a fact instead of a theory. We reduced...
