Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1: On sale in UK 3 August

Posted on Jul 26, 2011 by MG1

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, the super skinny Android tablet, will be hitting UK shops on 3 August.
Well, we say shops we actually mean shop. One shop - the Currys and PC World Tottenham Court Road branch in London, which will open its doors at 5pm to sell the 10.1-inch slate.
The official launch date for the UK is the day after, 4 August, where he Wi-Fi version will be available exclusively for a month both online and in Currys and PC World stores across the country.
Priced from £399, Samsung seems to have learnt its lesson from the incredibly overpriced original Galaxy Tab - the 7-inch Froyo device launched at the end of 2010 priced at £599 before having its price slashed only a couple of ...

Apple will replace some 1TB Seagate iMac HDDs

Apple will replace some 1TB Seagate iMac HDDs

Posted on Jul 26, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Apple

If you were one of the many people that upgraded to a new iMac back in May when they got new hardware you aren’t alone. We reviewed the new iMac when it launched. The machines got new processors and larger storage drives. If you opted for one of the iMacs that had a 1TB HDD from Seagate inside you may need a new HDD. Some of those early iMacs had an issue with the 1TB HDD and Apple is looking to replace those drives for you.
Apple has said that the HDDs could fail under certain conditions and that the issue only affects a very limited number of machines. The iMac had to be purchased with the Seagate 1TB HDD between May 2011 and July 2011 and the issue affects both the 21.5-inch and the 27-in...

Panasonic Raboo UT-PB1 e-reader gets official, acts more like a tablet

Panasonic Raboo UT-PB1 e-reader gets official, acts more like a tablet

Posted on Jul 26, 2011 by MG1

Panasonic already took its UT-PB1 e-reader out for a step-and-repeat at the e-Book Expo Tokyo this year, but kept some important details under wraps. Now the tablet e-reader is ready for its official coming out party. The 7-inch, color touchscreen Raboo UT-PB1 is set to launch in Japan on August 10th, retailing at about ¥34,800 (that's $444) and packing 600 plus "pre-viewable books." There's an Android OS running on an unspecified dual-core CPU under that book-mimicking surface with the company's own UI slathered all over it -- so there'll be no tablet-esque shenanigans here, yet. The 400 gram (14 ounce) handheld also comes furnished with 8GB of storage, WiFi, Bluetooth, microSDHC, support f...

Windows Phone 7 Mango finished as Microsoft tries again

Windows Phone 7 Mango finished as Microsoft tries again

Posted on Jul 26, 2011 by MG1

Microsoft has quietly finished Windows Phone 7's major Mango update, according to details in an episode of the Windows Phone Dev Podcast. Build 7710 has been released to manufacturing, which will make it the version the first shipping phones use. The company has already said it will take app submissions on August 22, likely a sign the OS will be on shipping devices soon afterwards.
The company is suspected of stepping up the release schedule to avoid a repeat of last year, where original Windows Phone 7 devices only arrived in November. Fujitsu is rumored shipping the first Japanese WP7 phone as soon as August. Nokia's Sea Ray prototype was caught using a final build and is also expected bef...

Verizon class action lawsuit to award free minutes

Verizon class action lawsuit to award free minutes

Posted on Jul 26, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Verizon Wireless

It’s not unusual for large companies to have class action lawsuits brought against them for any number of reasons. Payouts from these settlements, if any, are usually so meager for the users that it’s not worth the time and effort to get involved. I know I’ve opted out of a few cases myself as it simply wasn’t worth my time.

This time around Verizon Wireless is the unlucky recipient, the result of a recent judgment against them stemming from a domestic roaming dispute. The plaintiffs allege that Verizon failed to provide a specific roaming service under the America’s Choice II Calling Plan. According to the settlement, any current or former customer who, since February 21, 2005, subscribed...

AT&T Google Nexus S on sale today, exclusive to Best Buy

Posted on Jul 26, 2011 by MG1

If you shelled out 600 clams for an unlocked Nexus S, buyer's remorse starts now: the subsidized AT&T version is out today. Available exclusively from Best Buy (and exclusively in black), the AT&T Nexus S will set you back only a paltry $99 with a two-year contract. Is the loss of color choice (and that whole "SIM-locked to AT&T" thing) worth the savings? We'll leave that up to you and your (Google) wallet.

Budget MSI Android 2.3 tablet floats through FCC

Budget MSI Android 2.3 tablet floats through FCC

Posted on Jul 26, 2011 by MG1

MSI is readying its very low-cost Enjoy 10 Android 2.3 tablet for the US with an appearance in an FCC filing on Friday. Only labeled as MS-N0Y1 in the manual, the device has a 10-inch screen with a lower 480x800 resolution and a 1GHz ARM Cortex-A8 for a processor. The slate would have 512MB of RAM and lean on a full-size SD card slot for much of its storage.
Only Wi-Fi and Bluetooth provide wireless.
Very little is known about if or when the Enjoy 10 would ship to the US, and if so what it would cost. Such modest specs could keep the design at or under $300 given that even ASUS' Eee Pad Transformer costs $400. MSI also has an Enjoy 7 but hasn't indicated whether or not it would reach the US.

Texas Instruments earnings beats expectations but stock flat

Texas Instruments earnings beats expectations but stock flat

Posted on Jul 26, 2011 by MG1

More and more smartphones these days are beginning to ship with Texas Instruments’ processors these days but this may just be the beginning for the company in the mobile space. TI (TXN) announced its quarterly earnings today and beat expectations, even though the guidance given in the earnings call wasn’t as promising.
The company faces some stiff competition in the mobile spaces and will do battle with NVIDIA’s popular Tegra 2 dual-core CPU, the Exonys CPU found in Samsung’s Galaxy S 2, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon, and likely Apple’s A5 when the iPhone 5 finally lands. This isn’t to say the TI doesn’t stand a chance, as its multi-core processors are expected to be found in Motorola’s Droid Bionic...

Amazon stops selling Nintendo 3DS

Amazon stops selling Nintendo 3DS

Posted on Jul 26, 2011 by MG1

Amazon has stopped directly selling the Nintendo 3DS citing customer complaints as the cause of its decision. The portable gaming console currently has 359 reviews and an average of 4/5 stars on Amazon’s website, which suggests customers are happy with the unit itself, but the online retailer has posted a note that states:
While this item is available from other marketplace sellers on this page, it is not currently offered by Amazon.com because customers have told us there may be something wrong with our inventory of the item, the way we are shipping it, or the way it’s described here. (Thanks for the tip!)
We’re working to fix the problem as quickly as possible.
It remains unclear but Amazo...

LG Thrill 4G for AT&T priced at $99 on a new two-year contract

LG Thrill 4G for AT&T priced at $99 on a new two-year contract

Posted on Jul 26, 2011 by MG1

While it’s not as cheap as we previously thought, it looks like the US version of the LG Optimus 3D, the Thrill 4G, will land on AT&Tshelves for only $99 on a new two-year contract. This almost doesn’t need to be said but we can imagine that a dual-core toting, glasses-free 3D display-rocking handset for $99 should sell like hotcakes.
The LG Thrill 4G would be the first handset of its caliber to land at such a price in the US, third-party retailers notwithstanding. When the handset is released, we can imagine that some of those retailers will be offering up the handset at an even lower price. Say, $50, if not free.
On AT&T’s website, you can now grab the Motorola Atrix 4G for only $99 and wh...

AT&T prepping mid-September iPhone 5 launch?

AT&T prepping mid-September iPhone 5 launch?

Posted on Jul 26, 2011 by MG1

We all know that an iPhone 5 will be coming sooner or later but the latest rumor from BGR suggests that AT&T is preparing for a launch of the next-generation Apple phone in the middle of September.
There’s no specific source named other than it’s a “proven source,” but the timing does seem to make a bit of sense. In previous years, Apple would release an update to its iPhone in the middle of summer but it held off on that this year. The decision seems to have worked, as Apple was able to sell a record amount of iPhones last quarter even without a refresh.
The company generally has an iPod-focused event in September and it would be quite easy for it to transition this to its Fall iPhone event...

Unnamed Samsung Android slider headed for AT&T

Unnamed Samsung Android slider headed for AT&T

Posted on Jul 26, 2011 by MG1

If Samsung’s Android lineup is feeling a little sparse on AT&T, don’t worry… there’s about to be a new flagship in town. We have just exclusively received a photo of an unnamed Samsung device complete with sliding QWERTY keyboard that’s headed to AT&T in the coming months. While we don’t have much to go on, the device will sport the four-button Android layout as opposed to Samsung’s typical three-button layout at AT&T’s request, and the QWERTY keyboard even reflects that.
