BlackBerry Torch 9860 lighting up the FCC? (Update: frequencies added)
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesRIM BlackBerryTorch 9850
We're not precisely sure which model this mystery phone is with the neon-green back, but we know it's from RIM, and it looks an awful lot like some of the early leaked shots we've seen of the 9860, aka the Torch. It's made a visit to the FCC under the moniker RDH71CW / RDP71UW / RDQ71UW, different designations for various frequency flavors we presume, but at this point is only being tested for Bluetooth and WiFi compliance, leaving us guessing as to future carriers. Place your bets in comments below, and feel free to speculate about when this thing might actually ship -- and what color it might be when it does.
Update: Digging deeper into the filings, we discovered that RDH71CW supports GSM ...

Google Answers G+ Privacy Questions, Declines Others
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Dan Gillmore, writer, teacher, and Google+ member has been in communication with Google over the past few weeks, asking questions about security and safety of information as it pertains to Google+. As he says in his own words, “I find Google’s responses (and non-responses) disappointing.” As you’ll see below, Google answered some key questions and uncovered a few rocks we’re sure you’ll be interested in seeing under. There’s also a list of questions they did not reply to, and assuming Gillmore actually DID send these questions in and Google DID decline to answer, the implications are immense.

Logitech slashes its Revue price to $99 «
Like UnlikeFiled in: Digital Media PlayersLogitechRevue
After a net loss of $29.6 million for the first quarter, it seems like Logitech wants its Revue, which was the first Google TV device, to be able to take a bigger share of the market from its competitor, the Apple TV, during the second quarter.
Today Logitech announced that its device that launched at a steep $300 will now be competitively priced at just $99.
With the first generation, unproven platform, not enough for the consumers to justify a purchase, hopefully this price drop and the update coming sometime this summer with Android Honeycomb 3.1 and Android Market support, can save it from the ashes.
Although Logitech, Best Buy and Amazon are still showing the device at $250, look for th...

New AVG Premium Security Guards Your Good Name
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksDesktop Computers
Security vendor AVG Technologies today announced a new top-tier antivirus suite, AVG Premium Security. The new suite includes everything you'll find in AVG's Internet Security package plus aggressive identity protection. According to AVG, it's the only Internet security solution around that actively surveys the Web for incidents of stolen identity, rather than taking a passive approach to protecting your name.
AVG's Identity Alert module combs through known criminal webpages, chat rooms, and bulletin boards to find out if a customer's personal information is changing hands someplace it isn't supposed to. It monitors a user's email address and debit and credit card numbers, which AVG claims a...

AMD Catalyst 11.7 Drivers Now Available for Download
Like UnlikeFiled in: Graphic CardsAMD
AMD on Wednesday made available it's Catalyst 11.7 driver package for Radeon graphics card owners, and in doing so, the chip maker fixed a barrel full of issues, many of them related to Windows 7. AMD said the Catalyst 11.7 package addresses any and all quirks with mouse cursor lag, and if you've been experiencing system hangs on specific HDMI and DisplayPort displays using the previous driver package, 11.7 will fix that too.
Some of the other resolved issues in Windows 7 include:
Blu-ray playback using PowerDVD under High Performance no longer randomly hangs or displays a blank screen
Some DiVX format files no longer display video corruption using WinDVD
Random screen corruption is no longe...

Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini measures up to FCC scrutiny
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSony EricssonXperia mini
We've already had some hands-on time with Sony Ericsson's pint-sized Xperia Mini, and now it's the FCC's turn. The Android-packing smartphone got measured, prodded, and generally taken apart by the commission. The device, which the company is calling the "world's smallest Android powered HD video smartphone," is certainly tiny, but lacks the keyboard found on the similarly named Xperia Mini Pro, which also recently made its way through the FCC. Both are currently listed as "coming soon" on SE's site.

Ultimate hack: LulzSec may have duped British authorities into arresting innocent man
Like UnlikeFollowing reports on Wednesday that British police had arrested a 19-year-old suspect thought to be the spokesperson of notorious hacker group “LulzSec,” new information suggests authorities may have been duped into arresting an innocent man. According to DailyTech, a hacker by the name of “The Jester” has discovered and published chat logs that suggest “Topiary,” the hacker reportedly arrested by authorities on Wednesday, is still at large. According to the exposed chat, Sweden-born Daniel Ackerman Sandberg — the alleged real LulzSec spokesperson — recently assumed the online identity of another man in an effort to mislead authorities. Sandberg, who has reportedly changed his name numerous ...

Apple patent looks to extend battery life on future iPhone models using 'Jelly Rolls'
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
A patent filed by Apple back on January 26th 2010 and outed this week by the USPTO, addresses the issue of improving battery life on a future version of the Apple iPhone. The patent would improve upon the current 'Jelly Roll' design seen in round, cylindrical fuel cells that are rechargeable. In this design, anode and cathode material is rolled up, divided by a separator, and put in a hollow cylinder. The Apple patent, called "Battery with Multiple Jelly Rolls in a Single Pouch," would do exactly that to increase battery life on a future Apple iPhone model.
Apple's patent would increase battery life and power by putting multiple 'Jelly Rolls' in a pouch

Does Apple have any interest in buying Barnes & Noble?
Like UnlikeFiled in: AppleBarnes & Noble
We received a tip from an unproven source claiming to have knowledge of discussions within Apple to possibly purchase Barnes & Noble. While this might seem like a strange move at first, it actually makes a whole lot of sense. Apple would be able to take Barnes & Noble’s vast digital library of books and publications, and fold them into Apple’s own iBooks store. Apple would have no use for the NOOK, and that would likely be discontinued in this scenario. Apple could then convert some of the brick and mortar Barnes & Noble stores into Apple stores and close the rest. It’s out there, and with a price most likely around $1 billion to $1.5 billion, it might be a stretch (though it would barely ma...

US Cellular launches the messaging oriented Samsung Character for $39.99
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungCharacter
Last week, we reported that the messaging oriented Samsung Character was bound for the US seeing that it was up on Samsung’s US web site, but there was no mention as to which wireless provider would be offering it.
Well, it appears that US Cellular decided to nap the device for themselves as it’s now currently available for purchase for the affordable 2-year contract price of only $39.99. If owning a smartphone is rather too cumbersome or complex for you, then you might want to consider the Samsung Character instead seeing that it’s nothing more than your middle of the road messaging phone. Nothing really big to boast about, it features a landscape sliding keyboard, 2.8” QVGA touchscreen, 1....

BlackBerry Torch 9810 coming to Rogers
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesRIM BlackBerryTorch 9810
We’ve been hearing an awful lot about the U.S. carriers getting OS 7 BlackBerry devices, but not so much about us poor souls up north. Luckily, a few shots of Rogers in-store materials for the new Torch 9810 have slipped out. No mention of pricing, nor if Rogers will be getting the other OS 7 devices soon, like the Torch 9860, but it’s a safe assumption that Rogers and all of the major Canadian carriers (like Bell) will get at least a few of the new smartphones.
Athough the Torch 9810 looks an awful lot like its predecessor, it does bump up the processor speed to 1.2 GHz, improves RAM to 768 MB, and though the screen is still 3.2 inches and camera 5 megapixels, the display resolution is now ...

Motorola Solutions hits $2.1 billion in sales for Q2
Like UnlikeFiled in: Motorola
All said, Q2 wasn't such a bad one for the black logoed Motorola Solutions, with sales of $2.1 billion, up six percent from this time last year. That number includes $1.3 billion for government sales and $747 million for enterprise, up four and 11 percent over last year, respectively. Motorola Solutions, Inc. (MSI to its friends) was formed earlier this year, when the tech company split in two. Solutions specializes in things like barcode scanners and two-way radios, while Motorola Mobility Holdings deals with the more familiar (to us, at least) smartphone and Xoom-y side of things.

Nielsen: Android accounts for 39 percent of smartphones in the US, Apple is the top device maker
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsAppleGoogleAndroid
Nielsen's just released a study confirming what some other studies have already concluded -- that Android devices account for the single largest swath of smartphone users in the US, with 39 percent OS share as of the second quarter. That compares with 28 percent for iOS, although Apple still reigns as the country's top-selling device maker. Simply put, that's a reflection of the fact that Apple is the only outfit churning out iOS devices, whereas a bevy of companies led by HTC, Motorola, and Samsung have helped make Android the dominant OS in the states. And let's not forget about RIM, another hardware / software shop, which still commands a 20 percent chunk of the market. Rounding out the l...

Qualcomm Offers Devs Augmented Reality SDK for iOS

Qualcomm recently made a new version of its augmented reality software developers kit available, this time targeting Apple's iOS devices. Qualcomm released a similar SDK for the Android platform last year (specifically those running SnapDragon processors). This new SDK will allow developers to create augmented reality applications for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. Augmented reality can be used to create a variety of 3D landscapes over the live view from a phone's camera.

Sony Ericsson opens R&D center in Beijing, China

Sony Ericsson opened a Research and Development (R&D) operation center in Beijing, China. At the same time, the Swedish-Japanese handset maker has also extended its partnership with Suning, one of the leading retailers in China, to work together to drive further adoption of Sony Ericsson’s smartphones across the world’s most populous country.
And that’s about all we have. Plus there are words of Magnus Ahlqvist (President of Sony Ericsson Greater China) – he said: “As Sony Ericsson continues to develop a differentiated experience on Android with our Xperia smartphone portfolio, this new R&D center will contribute to both local and global R&D efforts. The new center will play a central role i...
