HP calls it quits with webOS

HP calls it quits with webOS

Posted on Aug 19, 2011 by MG15

After acquiring Palm for $1.2 billion in April 2010, HP has decided to call it quits and will no longer sell hardware powered by the webOS software that was the key behind its purchase of Palm. In a terse statement, the Palo Alto based firm said, "that it will discontinue operations for webOS devices, specifically the TouchPad and webOS phones. HP will continue to explore options to optimize the value of webOS software going forward."

When HP bought webOS, the idea was to have the software in printers, tablets, phones and computers all connecting with each other through the use of the operating system. Instead, HP was slow in bringing products to market and when something new was produced, ...

Apple Wins Patents for MagSafe on iPad, Multi-Touch Displays, Original iPod

Apple Wins Patents for MagSafe on iPad, Multi-Touch Displays, Original iPod

The patents are flying over at the US Patent and Trademark Office, a series of 20 of them running their way through the “granted” process this week putting some smiles on the faces of the Apple crew. The biggest news here appears to be that the MagSave magnetic charge port system we’ve been using on our MacBooks and MacBook Pros and MacBook Airs for a while now has been patented for use on the iPad. That means that when you’ve got your iPad plugged into the wall and uncle Frank goes flying by, tripping on the cord, your iPad will safely unplug with just the first *plink* of force, leaving the cord itself to sustain the bulk of the damage.

Nexus Prime of Samsung make regurgitated for October landing in all its Super AMOLED HD glory

Nexus Prime of Samsung make regurgitated for October landing in all its Super AMOLED HD glory

Posted on Aug 18, 2011 by MG3

Following yesterday's reports that Samsung has mastered the Super AMOLED HD technology with current production methods, but new materials and clever PenTile matrix gymnastics, comes another rumor that the Nexus Prime will carry such screen.
Google's next poster child for Android Ice Cream Sandwich is to indeed sport a 720x1280 pixels 4.5" screen, which should be a sight unseen, considering the Super AMOLED technology. Utlization of the PenTile matrix means details won't be as distinct as they would be with a normal RGB one, but there will be more than enough pixel density to compensate.

Wireless Co. Eying Kodak Patents for Protection

Wireless Co. Eying Kodak Patents for Protection

Filed in: KODAK

Kodak has put a number of its patents up for sale in order to unlock their value and generate some income. Many of the patents in question pertain to imaging. The Wall Street Journal reports that one of the companies considering a bid on the patents is "a large, strategic buyer in the wireless industry looking to use the patents for defensive protection." The Journal doesn't say which company. The wireless industry is embroiled in patent litigation, and many of the players are looking for the best way to protect themselves from lawsuits. Owning more patents could help. Google earlier this week announced its intent to acquire Motorola, in part because it will gain 17,000 patents in the deal. ...

After Microsoft, it's Nokia's turn to scare the Android masses over the Google-Motorola deal

Posted on Aug 18, 2011 by MG3

After Microsoft's Andy Lees said the other day that Windows Phone is now the only "equal opportunity" platform, referring to the Google-Motorola deal, it is a turn of the company that actually stand to enjoy preferable treatment by Redmond to chime in.
Nokia's CEO Stephen Elop, speaking at a seminar in Helsinki, tried to make the other Android manufacturers worried in his turn. "If I happened to be someone who was an Android manufacturer or an operator, or anyone with a stake in that environment, I would be picking up my phone and calling certain executives at Google and say 'I see signs of danger ahead'", said Mr Elop.

Most Android apps sit idle, top-50 apps make up 61% of all usage

Most Android apps sit idle, top-50 apps make up 61% of all usage

Posted on Aug 18, 2011 by MG3

Nielsen on Thursday ushered in a new era of mobile device usage reporting brought about by customer metering software installed on thousands of iOS and Android devices around the U.S. Rather than relying on survey results as is typical in the industry, Nielsen is now able to directly measure consumer behavior with its metering software — installed on consumers’ devices with their approval, of course — and report extremely accurate data. This first report examines Android owners’ usage of apps and the mobile Web, and finds that time spent using apps is roughly double time spent browsing the mobile Web. More interestingly, Nielsen found that the top-10 apps in the Android Market account for a ...

Samsung, who many know from their rather large portfolio of Android smartphones and HDTV televisions, is also one of the world’s largest component suppliers. In fact, according to a recent article in The Economist, of the $178 worth of components Apple uses to make an iPhone 4, 25% of that money goes to Samsung. Two “industry insiders” who spoke to OLED-Info have told the online publication that Samsung will introduce several Super AMOLED panels later this year that pack a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. One of the said panels will measure 5.3 inches diagonally and be used in an upcoming smartphone.

Last month the big news in the patent space was the $4.5 billion winning bid for Nortel’s portfolio of 6,000 patents. This week it was obviously Google’s purchase of Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion, which includes their portfolio of 17,000 patents and 7,500 additional patents that are waiting to be approved, that showed us yet again how important it is for companies to have a vast stockpile of patents in order to defend themselves from potential litigation. Next month we’re going to have yet another huge patent acquisition story to report, the 8,800 or so patents owned by InterDigital. According to Reuters, Apple, Nokia, and Qualcomm are said to be in the bid for InterDigital’s extensive...

Yes people, this could be the day we all look back upon with sheer horror, as The Robots chase us from our houses and onto the streets.
