We first heard about the existence of the Acer M310 Windows Phone last week, but literally no information was given besides the fact that two test units were discovered on a developer's traffic sheet. How about a few more shreds of meat to chew on? According to WindowsPhoneNZ, the Mango device was sighted at TechEd New Zealand with HDMI-out support. We may be seeing this feature across a large variety of Windows Phones coming out this fall, as the HTC Eternity has been rumored to include video output via HDMI as well. The observer claims the M310 has a "black shiny look" and "bevelled edges," has a similar appearance to the Acer W4 (shown in the above image), and includes DLNA support over W...

Ready to check out a phone brand you've never seen or heard of before? Of course you are. We just got our hands on exclusive photos and details of a mysterious Android handset from Verzo, a newcomer to the market. The phone's called the Kinzo and is slated for a launch in late September. Verzo's keeping a tight lid on the specifics for right now, but we know the phone was designed by Novague and it'll feature its own UI -- not in an attempt to be different, it says, but "to get the most from the Android system."

Rumor: Nintendo working on 3DS redesign, $10 joystick add-on

Rumor: Nintendo working on 3DS redesign, $10 joystick add-on

Posted on Aug 24, 2011 by MG15

By most accounts, the 3DS hasn't quite been the runaway success that Nintendo was banking on. The company attempted to address the lukewarm response with a significant price drop and an accompanying public apology. Now it seems that even more drastic measures may be in the works. French site 01net, which has hit past gaming rumors squarely on the head, is reporting that Nintendo is working on a $10 analog joystick add-on that will snap onto the portable console. That revelation poses all kinds of questions, like how the system will be able to close with the controller in place and whether 3DS users will really take to such a thing.

Failbook Phone: AT&T Already Looking To Ditch The HTC Status, Says Source

Posted on Aug 24, 2011 by MG15

Surprise! Even a clever little gimmick like a dedicated Facebook button can’t save a bad phone from an early demise.

After just 36 days on the shelves, a trusted source close to AT&T tells us the carrier is already prepping to ditch HTC’s so-called “Facebook Phone”, the Status. The reason? The thing just isn’t selling.

Since the initial tipster came forward, we’ve confirmed with multiple sources that sales of the Status are considerably lower than anyone expected. AT&T declined to comment.

Sprint to offer iPhone 5 in October, WSJ reports

Posted on Aug 24, 2011 by MG15

In line with recent analyst speculation, Sprint will offer the iPhone 5 in the “middle” of October, The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday, noting that the device will be sold at the same time as Apple’s current iPhone 4. That suggests that recent reports about the iPhone 4 being sold as a lower-priced option are accurate. Apple is expected to announce the successor to the iPhone 4 in September or October. The iPhone 5 is expected to be thinner and lighter than the iPhone 4 and recent reports have suggested that it will be a “bigger update” than expected. Other reports have also suggested that the device will offer an 8-megapixel camera and a dual-core processor.

Windows Phone Reaches 30,000 Apps, Opens Marketplace to Mango Submissions

Windows Phone Reaches 30,000 Apps, Opens Marketplace to Mango Submissions

Posted on Aug 24, 2011 by MG15

There are now 30,000 mobile applications available for Windows Phone, Microsoft’s newest mobile operating system. That’s a huge jump from the 11,500 apps Microsoft reported back in March, but still far short of industry leaders, iOS and Android. For comparison purposes, there are 425,000 iOS apps and over 250,000 on Android, at least according to the latest official reports. But 30K apps isn’t bad for an operating system that’s not even a year old yet, we’d argue.

New version of Swype includes gesture-based shortcuts for copying text, tweeting

New version of Swype includes gesture-based shortcuts for copying text, tweeting

Posted on Aug 24, 2011 by MG15

Filed in: Cell Phones

The Swype virtual keyboard has been updated to beta 3.25 with a couple of handy new features. The most flashy of them are new gestures that are made by tracing from the Swype key in the bottom-left. Trace up to A to select everything in the current text box, trace to C to copy it, and trace to V to paste whatever’s in the clipboard. That’s clever and practical, but the really cool stuff involves tapping into apps. With certain text selected, you can gesture from the Swype key to T then W to launch into composing a tweet with that text, or to G then M to launch into a Google Maps search for that query. There’s also a gesture for Facebook in there somewhere, though the demo video doesn’t give ...

Samsung could be preparing to purchase HP's PC business

Posted on Aug 24, 2011 by MG15

While Michael Dell laughs it up on Twitter, a new report suggests that Samsung could be preparing to purchase Hewlett-Packard’s PC business, which the company revealed it may soon spin off. The report states that Samsung is currently meeting with various leading manufacturers including Quanta and Compal to investigate outsourcing the production of its own netbook computers. Samsung has held similar meetings in the past to no avail, but anonymous source tell DigiTimes that the company ...

Google Wallet might roll out on September 1st

Posted on Aug 24, 2011 by MG15

Filed in: Cell PhonesGoogle

Google’s NFC-based Wallet mobile payment service aims to turn your smartphone into a credit-card replacement and it has the support of a handful of retailers include RadioShack. One of the Shack’s employees however did more to hint about the service release date than Google ever managed to do - basically he revealed September 1st as the exact date when Google Wallet is expected to go live.

Or at least that’s when RadioShack will start supporting it. This would also mean that NFC readers would be installed at the retailer’s numerous locations.

You might wonder, where you’d get all those NFC-enabled phones and rightly so as only a couple of current subsidized handsets come equipped with the ...

Is this AT&T's first 4G LTE handset, the Samsung Impulse 4G?

Posted on Aug 24, 2011 by MG15

We have received photos from a trusted source that show what could be AT&T’s first LTE smartphone, the Samsung Impulse 4G. We don’t have too many details to go on beyond the photo you see above along with an image of a case accessory that maps out the back of the device, but the Impulse 4G does look awfully like the Samsung DROID Charge, and this might be AT&T’s equivalent. Again, no firm release date on this one, but we definitely like where this is going. Full-sized images are in the gallery linked below.

Sony unveils SLT-A77 flagship APS-C DSLR-rival

Posted on Aug 24, 2011 by MG15

Sony has released the SLT-A77, a successor to its A700 semi-pro DSLR. The long-promised A77 makes use of Sony's translucent mirror technology to offer an impressive 12 frame-per-second shooting rate, despite its 24MP APS CMOS sensor. In addition has the highest-resolution electronic viewfinder we've ever encountered, with a 2.4M dot OLED viewfinder that rivals the company's full-frame A900 for size. We've been using a pre-production A77 for just over a week and have prepared a hands-on preview including real-world sample gallery. Has it been worth the wait for the Alpha faithful?
