Steve Jobs Death Tweet Kills Web Show's Relationship with CBS
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Steve Jobs might be alive and kicking (as of this article's writing), but those responsible for posting a Twitter message suggesting otherwise have suddenly found a new death on their hands to talk about: The death of their Web show's affiliation with CBSNews.com.
The Twitter account for the web show "What's Trending" was responsible for the Friday Twitter message: "Reports say that Steve Jobs has passed away. Stay tuned for more updates." The problem? Jobs sure wasn't dead.
The show attempted to cover its bases by disavowing the death report minutes later, but armies of users retweeting the update had already cast the unconfirmed report out into cyberspace. And CBS was left to mop up the eg...

TouchDroid Project Dies, But Work Continues on Touchpad Android Port
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsHPTouchPad
The TouchDroid project, which was created just weeks ago in the wake of HP's Touchpad liquidation sale, has already disbanded. The project's discontinuation stems not from technical problems but because of accusations of code theft by the CyanogenMod team, which has also been working to bring Android to HP's defunct tablet.
After the TouchDroid team posted a video showing off the Touchpad running a touch-enabled install of Android 2.3, the CyanogenMod team accused TouchDroid team members of stealing code from the CyanogenMod port and passing it off as their own. In the end, the TouchDroid team gave the CyanogenMod team credit for its work, posted a dump of what they had done up to that point...

Bit.ly Says Web Users Move On To New Things Quickly, Old Links Die Fast
Like UnlikeThe Internet hoards are fickle, easily distractible masses – just look at the proliferation of Lolcats and the whole Rickroll phenomenon. We’re not passing judgment – who doesn’t like a well-played Rickroll? – we’re just saying. Turns out, the popular link shortening site bit.ly thinks the same thing, only they have numbers to back it up. That awesome link you posted on Twitter? It’ll see most of its clicks in less time than it takes to watch a Peter Jackson movie.

NVIDIA Announces "Grey", First Tegra SoC with Integrated Baseband Due in 2012
Like UnlikeFiled in: nVIDIA
Four months ago NVIDIA announced the acquisition of Icera, a baseband solution provider. Icera's technology didn't make it into any smartphones but it did have some success in the USB modem market. The obvious impteus for the acquisition was to eventually integrate Icera basebands into NVIDIA Tegra SoCs, providing a "single chip" solution for those customers who want it. Currently Qualcomm is the only major SoC player to offer an application processor with integrated baseband with its Snapdragon SoC.
After the acquisition was announced NVIDIA wouldn't commit to any timeframe for integrating Icera's technology, even going as far as to say that many customers weren't demanding that level of in...

Hacker Claiming He Can Exploit Windows Update
Like UnlikeThere's a hacker out there somewhere claiming that he can issue fake updates to Windows-based desktops and laptops thanks to a set of stolen digital certificates. This means he has the potential to pump malware into Microsoft's Windows Update service and infect the entire Windows user base.
Calling himself "Comodohacker," the supposed 21-year-old Iran resident recently took credit for several attacks against certificate authorities (CA) – organizations and companies authorized to issue secure socket layer (SSL) certificates – including one against Comodo in March, and one just recently involving Dutch-based DigiNotar and 531 stolen certificates. It was this latest DigiNotar hack in which Com...

Aol and Yahoo Might Merge into One Giant Clusternut of Awful
Like UnlikeIn the best tie-up since that time I made myself a Vodka and skim milk out of sheer desperation, Aol and Yahoo may merge. It'd be just like Voltron, if Voltron were a rotten egg riding atop a ruptured spleen.
As Bloomberg reports, the two companies are currently sniffing around each others' hindquarters like two mealy strays. Specifically, Aol CEO Tim Armstrong, whose vision for a content empire has proven positively Magoo-ian, has been speaking with Yahoo's investment banking and private equity advisers about what a tower of suck awesome the two companies could create together.

That Anonymous Cop Leak Was Much Worse than We Thought
Like UnlikeWhen Anon stuck their finger in the eye of many a Texan cop with their huge 3 GB data dump, we were more interested in the bigoted juicy stuff. Turns out, it was also an identity thief's wet dream.
Security firm Identity Finder ran a detailed analysis of the leaked goods, and came up with some astonishing stats—within the cache was enough to steal a hell of a lot of money:

Three UK takes legal action over NFC consortium
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
Three UK has filed a complaint with the EU over the proposed near field communications (NFC) payment consortium consisting of Vodafone, Everything Everywhere and O2.
The three major networks hope to develop a mobile wallet project that uses a pay as you go system on NFC chips that allow users to 'tap and pay' in shops and cafes.
Regulators are yet to give Vodafone, Everything Everywhere and O2 the go ahead, but Three isn't hanging around, having filed the legal action with the EU's antitrust authorities.
Cosy
Stephen Lerner, Three's general counsel, describes the networks' consortium as a "cosy collaboration" and said that the EU "should not allow this type of collaboration to go forward und...

Google Docs Outage Blamed on Memory Glitch
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Google on Friday blamed a recent Google Docs outage on a real-time collaboration update that exposed a glitch in its system.
Google Docs was inaccessible for about an hour on Wednesday afternoon, meaning users could not view or edit document lists, documents, drawings, or Apps Scripts.
"So what happened? The outage was caused by a change designed to improve real time collaboration within the document list," Alan Warren, a Google engineering director, wrote in a blog post. "Unfortunately this change exposed a memory management bug which was only evident under heavy usage."
Warren said that every time someone modifies a Google Doc, a machine works behind the scenes to look up the server that n...

How Researchers Stole 20GB of E-Mail from Fortune 500 Companies
Like UnlikeTwo researchers who set up doppelganger domains to mimic legitimate domains belonging to Fortune 500 companies say they managed to vacuum up 20 gigabytes of misaddressed e-mail over six months.
The intercepted correspondence included employee usernames and passwords, sensitive security information about the configuration of corporate network architecture that would be useful to hackers, affidavits and other documents related to litigation in which the companies were embroiled, and trade secrets, such as contracts for business transactions.

Sprint rumored to retain unlimited data with iPhone 5 launch, prove unicorns are indeed legit
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4s
Here's the word straight from Bloomberg's unnamed sources: Sprint's not only getting the elusive iPhone 5 -- it's keeping an unlimited data plan around just to sway buyers who may otherwise spring for the AT&T / Verizon Wireless variants. Furthermore, these folks in-the-know have good reason to believe that it'll be launched "next month," which gives Apple a shockingly small amount of time to invite us over for a west coast reveal. As it stands, the only folks who'll get limitless data with an iPhone 5 on its existing US carriers are those with grandfathered plans; any new customers on Ma Bell or Big Red will be forced to select one of many tiered options. Not surprisingly, neither Sprint no...

LG Marquee caught on candid camera, is this Sprint's Optimus Black?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesLGOptimus BlackMarquee
Is this a case of smartphone identity crisis, or just a repurposed chassis? Whatever the case may be, LG's got a Marquee handset ready to shore up Sprint's future line-up. The leaked shot comes courtesy of a now private video spotted by Android Central, and was taken at a Dallas-based Radio Shack Business Summit. It's evident from the one Mr. Blurrycam screen cap on display that the phone's currently running a vanilla build of Gingerbread, and sports a minimalistic design that's reminiscent of the Optimus Black. We can't be certain the two are indeed twins, however that leaked roadmap did indicate a stateside October bow for the Optimus Black -- this could simply be a rebrand for the Now Net...

AVG responds to malware allegations, claims to be only getting in early
Like UnlikeAVG have posted a lengthy response to the complaints and allegations which have arisen after the release of their AVG Mobilation virus-scanning app.
The product has been accused of being at best ineffectual and at worst spyware, stealing information and tracking users without their permission or knowledge.
CTO of AVG, Yuval Ben-Itzhak claimed they were just responding early to potential threats, just as they did on Android, where their product is currently discovering hundreds of thousands of viruses.

Rogers to soon launch an LTE enabled HTC Puccini?
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsHTC
A leaked document obtained by Mobile Syrup shows that Canadian carrier Rogers plans on bringing back the Puccini name on its variant of HTC's 10.1 inch Android tablet. The HTC Puccini was given the moniker HTC Jetstream for its launch on AT&T last week. Rogers has said that it would be launching an LTE tablet from an important manufacturer and this fits the bill. If the document is legitimate (and it appears to be, even with the misspelling of the Puccini name) the device will be known as the HTC Puccini LTE.
This leaked memo shows that the HTC Puccini LTE is coming to Rogers
If launched, the HTC Puccini LTE will be the first tablet on Rogers to use LTE for 4G speeds. Previously, the carrier...
