Qualcomm and Texas Instruments talk about Windows 8 on ARM
Like UnlikeQualcomm and Texas Instruments have commented on one of the biggest developments on Windows 8, the OS running on ARM processors. Eager to show Windows 8 on ARM will provide a full desktop browsing experience, Qualcomm ironically concentrated on showing Flash while browsing, something which Microsoft is in fact deprecating in favour of HTML5. Obama inks patent reform bill
Like UnlikeA patent reform seems to have been long due - patent wars escalated in recent months, but it’s really companies like Lodsys speculatively buying others inventions to profit from them that have underlined the urgency of reform. Two weeks ago, the US Senate finally approved a patent reform bill known as the America Invents Act introducing change into a piece of legislation dating back 50 years ago or so.
The new bill aims to change the way the system functions at its core switching from the first-to-invent to the first-to-file method used in virtually all developed countries. But the bill had to pass one more hurdle before coming into force - the president’s approval. Barack Obama inked the l...

Developers should release their Mango apps now
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Phone 7.5
There is a debate whether developers should wait for the official roll-out of Mango or release their Mango-ready apps now, as Microsoft has been suggesting.
Developers reluctant to update their apps in Marketplace to Mango worry about leaving their NoDo users unsupported to chase a very small audience, and there have even been arguments that developers who release apps now will miss being in the “new release” Marketplace charts when Mango does actually come out, and then be buried deeply in the avalanche of newly updated apps.
The counter argument however is typified by the above tweet by qReadie developer Chris Sainty, which shows that there is in fact already a pretty large number of Mango...

Samsung Galaxy S II graphics processor found to be fastest among current smartphones
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGalaxy S II
We didn't have high hopes or hard numbers for the Mali-400 GPU desinged by ARM that found its way in Samsung's first dual-core chipset Exynos, but going with PowerVR was obviously no longer possible in light of the battles between Apple and Samsung.
The last year's finest Apple A4 and Samsung Humingbird both utilized PowerVR, but this year the new dual-core chipsets A5 and Exynos went separate ways with both the architecture and the graphics subsystems.
AnandTech, however, compared the Mali-400 GPU performance, and found it to be better than other graphics chips in current high-end smartphones, including for the Adreno 220 GPU as found in Qualcomm's Snpadragon S3 in phones like the HTC Sensa...

Netflix spins DVD rentals into new business dubbed 'Qwikster'
Like UnlikeNetflix CEO Reed Hastings in a letter to subscribers on Monday stated that Netflix will no longer operate the DVD rental-by-mail service that carried it to the top of the home entertainment industry. Instead, Netflix will be a streaming-only service while the DVD rental business — which will soon add video games to its portfolio — is spun off and rebranded Qwikster. “I messed up. I owe you an explanation,” Hastings’ letter to Netflix customers begins. “It is clear from the feedback over the past two months that many members felt we lacked respect and humility in the way we announced the separation of DVD and streaming and the price changes. That was certainly not our intent, and I offer my s...

Samsung Galaxy S III to feature quad-core CPU?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGalaxy S III
An anonymous 4chan user is either leaking some seriously mind-boggling information about the Samsung Galaxy S III, or is just trying to troll us (which they’re well-known for). Either way, it’s caught our attention. Apparently, this random person has a huge inside scoop on the upcoming handset thanks to a briefing with some Samsung reps.
Samsung allegedly plans on unveiling the Samsung Galaxy S III at the 2012 Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. According to the source, it will include — get your grains of salt ready — a 2.0 GHz quad-core CPU, 1.5 GB of RAM, a 4.65-inch display with a 1280 x 1024 resolution, 10 MP camera with 1080p 60 fps video, and 32 GB of internal storage. HTC rumored to work on Android devices with Intel chips inside
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsIntelHTCGoogleAndroid
Just as there will be Windows 8 tablets with NVIDIA, Qualcomm and Texas Instruments ARM-based chips, so goes the other way around - we will see Android devices, powered by Intel silicon.
In fact, rumors suggest that Intel employees have been walking the floors at IDF 2012 with HTC-made devices in hand running Android, but powered by an Intel chipset, which will be previewed around CES or MWC time early 2012.
Google's Andy Rubin announced a strategic move the other day to support Intel's x86 architecture in the next versions of Android, and the announcement was scheduled for the same day when Microsoft introduced Windows 8 running on ARMed tablets.
Now what is HTC doing sniffing around and ...

Telstra won't be Gingerbreading the HTC Desire after all
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsHTCGoogleDesireAndroid 2.3
If you're on Australia's Telstra network and you're still clinging to hope of an OTA Gingerbread update for your beloved HTC Desire, then now it's officially time to let go. For a while it looked like Telstra might opt for a smart workaround to the old handset's lack of memory, but now the operator's update page makes it clear that it has fallen in line with the wider HTC stance: Android 2.3 just isn't viable on this device, unless you're prepared to go off-piste with the developer build or an unofficial ROM.

Apple hiring fresh security personnel
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Apple is hiring fresh personnel to beef up its security in the fight against counterfeiting and theft of its products, following yet another incident of a lost iPhone prototype.
The Cupertino-based company is searching for two experienced professionals to bump up its “new product security”. These workers would join a team at the $350-billion company that has included ex-FBI agents and other highly trained pros with backgrounds in intelligence and law enforcement. Geez, is this a tech company or a government defense contractor we’re talking about?
It should come as no surprise as to how Apple is hush-hush about its security problems, but Jim Stickley, co-founder of corporate security consulti...

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 priced at $469.99
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsSamsungGALAXY Tab 8.9
Are you looking for an Android tablet but don’t want to settle for the usual 7 and 10.1 inch varieties? Worry not, as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 has received its official pricing for the US and should land on shelves very soon.
The Galaxy Tab 8.9 is just as powerful than its 10.1 inch brother, but ships with the obvious smaller display, and because of that we weren’t surprised to hear that the price of the 8.9 isn’t much cheaper than the 10 incher. Starting at $469.99, the Tab 8.9 is virtually identical to its larger variant but can be wielded in one hand and weighs only 447 grams. While it may not be as comfortable as holding a 7 inch tablet in one hand, the Tab 8.9 is much more manageable ...
