Apple receives seven domain names used for porn, that use iPhone in the URL address
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
A few weeks ago we told you that Apple was in the process of trying to obtain a number of domain names used by porn sites that contained "iPhone" in the URL. For example, one of the sites that rankled the brass at Cupertino was www.iphone4s.com. That domain name, along with six others, is now under Apple's control. According to WHOIS, the seven names are now officially owned by MarkMonitor which is a company that protects brand names and in this case, is protecting Apple. In the spy business, MarkMonitor would be considered a "beard".
Besides www.iphone4s.com, the other six are iphonecamforce.com, iphonecam4s.com, iphoneporn4s.com, iphonesex4s.com, iphonexxforce.com, and porn4iphones.com. Th...

EU concerned mobile phone lawsuits may stifle innovation
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
Finally, a governing body is waking up to the reality that a growing number of mobile phone lawsuits are used as weapons against their rivals. According to a report in Reuters, the EU is “concerned” that intellectual propertyrights are being used to shut down the sales of a competitor’s products and stifle innovation.
Speaking to reporters, EU Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia said, “standardisation and IP rights are two instruments that in this new IT sector can be used as a tool to abuse.” The EU commissioner points to Apple and Samsung’s legal battle as a potential example of this type of abuse. The two manufacturers are engaged in a heated exchange of over 20 lawsuits in 10 differ...

More than 50% of all smartphones will be NFC enabled in 2-3 years
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
We’ve been hearing that smartphones will transform into mobile wallets “any year now” for at least the past five years. But with the introduction of the Google Nexus S, Google Wallet, the ISIS initiative, and a handful of smartphones with integrated NFC, it looks like the technology is finally poised to take off. According to Taiwanese phone makers, more than 50% of all smartphones will include NFC within the next 2-3 years. That comes as no surprise: Google’s latest Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) operating system has support for NFC built-in, a number of BlackBerry smartphones offer NFC, the Galaxy S II models on AT&T and T-Mobile have some form of dorment NFC support, and the brand new S...

Apple beats HTC in patent infringement case; HTC becomes top U.S. smartphone seller
Like UnlikeFiled in: AppleHTC
When HTC acquired S3 Graphics for $300 million this summer, the idea was that by purchasing the target's patent portfolio, HTC could defend itself against attacks from Apple's litigious lawyers. At the same time, the hope for the Taiwan based manufacturer was that the patents would allow them to go after Apple and its vaunted smartphone. On Tuesday the International Trade Commission ruled that Apple had not violated any of the patents acquired by HTC in the S3 Graphics deal and HTC said that it might appeal directly to a U.S. patent court. HTC General Counsel Grace Lei said the company was disappointed, but is still reviewing all of its options.
So was the S3 Graphics deal a waste of $300 mi...

Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesLGOptimus LTE
The LG Optimus LTE “Superphone” that Bell made available today has such a gorgeous display, 4.5-inches of “True HD” goodness that has a resolution of 1280 x 720 (see video here). Apart from rocking Android OS 2.3 (no plans yet on an upgrade to OS 4.0), the LG Optimus LTE has an 8-megapixel camera that shoots 1080p HD videos, 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera and a 1.5 dual-core processor. As for prices, Bell has pegged this in for $149.95 on a 3-year and ranges up to $629.95 on a no-contract. Since this is an LTE device, Bell notes that you can eventually get download speeds of up to 75 Mbps, but you should really expect “average speeds of 12–25 Mbps”. In addition, if you fall outside the LT...

LG holding 'exclusive launch event' on December 1st, Nitro HD the likely suspect
Like UnlikeFiled in: LG
In case you were wondering why LG hasn't been making huge waves in the US this holiday season yet, it appears we now know the reason. The company just sent us a nice invite in the form of electronic mail, detailing an exclusive launch event on the evening of December 1st (next Thursday). LG was trying to play coy by not leaving any clues in the image, but fortunately it left the name of the image file easily seen by our prying eyes: LG Nitro. The Nitro HD has long been rumored to be the Optimus LTE for AT&T and another name for the P930, which was referenced in an XML file as having a 1,280 x 720 HD display. Sounds great, but we never know for sure until it happens -- after all, we could be ...

CTIA and ESRB team up on new rating system for mobile applications
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
Details are fairly light at the moment, but the CTIA has put out a press release today announcing that it has partnered with the Entertainment Software Rating Board (or ESRB) on a new rating system for mobile applications. That's the same ESRB that is responsible for the ratings on video games. Unfortunately, any word on the ratings themselves or their possible acceptance by app makers or distributors will have to wait until the press event on November 29th, but it sounds like there will be a fairly big push behind them when they are announced -- the presidents of both industry groups, along with US Senators Mark Pryor and Kelly Ayotte are slated to be on hand for the announcement.

Quad-core Samsung Galaxy S III coming early in 2012?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGalaxy S III
With Nvidia officially taking the reigns off of its quad-core Tegra 3 platform, it was only going to be a matter of time before the quad-core smartphone rumours began.
But it's not a Kal-El powered phone whisper that has caught Pocket-lint's eye - but rather the murmur of a quad-core packing Samsung Galaxy S III that has got the fandroid in us all hot an bothered.
According to an Android and Me source, Samsung has some devices planned for early 2012 that will "blow minds" and that are a "big step past the Galaxy Nexus class, in every way".
Blimey o'trousers indeed - that's some prediction.

Apple delays release of iOS 5.0.2 due to memory leaks?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleiOS 5
Speculation that Apple would release iOS 5.0.2 this week has been replaced by a new report from German web site Macerkopf.de that the software release has been put on hold because of memory leaks in the code. The release was designed to improve the battery life on the Apple iPhone 4S, and to help fix some bugs on the phone and on Documents in the Cloud.
The battery fix is expected to give Apple iPhone 4S users 10 hours of active use. Apple's own information reveals that the handset should get 200 hours of standby time, up to 8 hours of 3G phone calls, as much as 6 hours of browsing time and 10 and 40 hours of video and audio playback respectively.

Facebook, HTC working on phone code-named Buffy
Like UnlikeFiled in: HTC
Here we go again. Reports from AllThingsD suggest that the world’s largest social network is working with HTC to build, develop and release a Facebook phone and the project, code-named “Buffy,” is being spearheaded by Facebook CTO Bret Taylor.
The details are actually pretty sparse but AllThingsD is promising that it will have a full series about this Facebook phone this week, so it’s probably just doling out what it knows to keep us clicking. The HTC Facebook phone is supposed to run a modified version of Android and it will use the HTML5 capabilities of the latest redesign to let users buy and use apps. As you may know, the HTML5 version on the iPhone doesn’t let browsers use Facebook Cred...

HP blew $3.3 billion killing Palm and webOS
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsHPPalmwebOS
HP released its Q4 2011 financial results this afternoon, and while the company did better than Wall Street expected it to in total, it still managed to lose billions of dollars on the webOS platform. Last year, HP bought Palm for $1.2 billion, and today the company admitted how much more money it sunk into webOS this year, only to leave it high and dry halfway through.
According to the company figures, HP spent $3.3 billion on the remainder of Palm and webOS this year, even though it decided that it would discontinue webOS smartphones and tablets this summer. The company did bring in $200 million from the firesale of the TouchPad, but all of those sales were at a loss, so that can't really ...

ITC dismisses S3's first complaint against Apple
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
The International Trade Commission has dismissed the first complaint filed by S3 against Apple saying there has been no violation of patents, but this does not affect the second complaint filed jointly between HTC and S3 against Apple.
It had been assumed that it would be unlikely for the ITC to find any infringement on Apple's part in this case, but it is unclear why exactly the ITC rejected the complaint. According to Florian Mueller, our favorite oddly-biased patent sleuth, it could be either because Apple had properly licensed the graphics chips in question, or it could be because of specific claims relating to one of the four patents involved in the case.
