Apple's big Black Friday sale brings little discounts, leak reveals
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Details surrounding Apple’s Black Friday sale have reportedly been revealed and as has been the case in the past, the discounts afforded are minimal. 9to5Mac on Wednesday published what appear to be images of a pamphlet outlining all of the deals Apple has in store this coming Friday, November 25th. Sale items this year include the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and iMac, all available for $101 off retail pricing. Discounts on Apple’s iPad 2 will range from $41 for the less expensive models to $61 for the high-end tablets, and Apple is lowering the iPod nano’s price by $11 during its one-day sale. The iPod touch will also see discounts ranging from $21 to $41 depending on capacity, and Apple Store...

China passes U.S. in smartphones shipped for Q3
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
According to a new study by Strategy Analytics, China surpassed the U.S. in smartphone shipments in Q3 2011, making it the world's largest smartphone market by volume for the first time.
Strategy Analytics' report says that 23.9 million smartphones were shipped to China in Q3, edging out the 23.3 million that went to the U.S. There are significant differences between the two markets, obviously, as the largest provider of smartphones in China was Nokia, with 6.8 million units shipped (28.5 percent of the market). In the U.S., Apple and HTC were the top dogs, with HTC shipping 5.6 million units and Apple delivering 4.8 million.

Like UnlikeFiled in: NOKIASiemens
After Nokia and Siemens failed to sell Nokia Siemens Networks, the joint venture announced on Wednesday that it will cut 17,000 jobs around the globe by 2013 as part of a restructuring move that will focus on services and mobile broadband. “Our goal is to provide the world’s most efficient mobile networks, the intelligence to maximize the value of those networks, and the services capability to make it all work seamlessly,” Nokia Siemens CEO Rajeev Suri said. “Despite the need to restructure parts of our company, our commitment to research and development remains unchanged, with investment in mobile broadband expected to increase over the coming years.” In addition to the layoffs, Nokia Sieme...

LG Optimus One for Republic Wireless has features borrowed from CyanogenMod
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesLGOptimus One
The first group of Beta testers have been testing the specially outfitted LG Optimus One that Republic Wireless requires customers of its $19 a month unlimited service to use. As we reported, the carrier uses Wi-Fi to connect calls, send texts and to download and upload data with Sprint's 3G pipeline as a backup, and service started November 8th. One of the beta testers who just received her phone has recorded an unboxing of the handset.
While much of the UI is stock Android, some features such as the lock screen, almost look like they have been taken from CyanogenMod. Also added are quick setting toggles in the notification bar. Outside of those two things, the rest of the phone has pretty...

First game subscription hits iOS App Store
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleiOS 5
Until now, if you wanted to purchase an app on an iPad you had to pay a one-time purchase fee. Now, Apple is opening up its policies a bit to allow developers to create applications that charge monthly subscription fees for access to content. Big Fish Games is the first studio to gain approval from Apple to introduce an app subscription model, Bloomberg said. Big Fish Games will allow iPad owners to pay $4.99 per month for unlimited access to all of its games, and Apple takes a 30% cut of all revenues. “This is the first time that the technology has matched the business model,” Big Fish founder Paul Thelan said. Big Fish said it will also allow users to play its games for 30 minutes per day ...

Spanish wireless carrier Telefónica Digital announced Wednesday that it has partnered with Research In Motion on a new NFC-based mobile wallet pilot in Spain. The phones can be used to purchase goods and services at local retailers, or to open doors at the Telefónica’s headquarters with a simple tap to another NFC sensor. Read on for more.
“We have chosen the BlackBerry solution for this pilot because of the security that the platform brings,” Telefónica Digital chief operating officer Julio Linares said. “RIM’s participation has been important for thi...

HTC may be developing Chrome OS/Android hybrid device
Like UnlikeFiled in: HTC
HTC has had a rough week with the loss in the S3 case against Apple and subsequent drop in projected sales, but a new report from DigiTimes is saying that HTC may have an interesting new device in the works which is a Chrome OS/Android hybrid.
Right now, the only manufacturers in the Chrome OS ecosystem are Acer and Samsung, but reports say that even with the recent price drop for Chromebooks, they may see fewer than 30,000 devices sold by the end of the year. Chromebooks have a relatively limited appeal since they run just a modified Chrome browser and nothing else, but do have benefits for certain markets because of their speed, auto-updates and affordability. Although the current Chromebo...

Android 2.3 Gingerbread update headed to Samsung DROID Charge "soon"
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsSamsungGoogleAndroid 2.3Droid Charge
Verizon Wireless has revealed that the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the Samsung DROID Charge smartphone will be released in the near future, or "soon" as the carrier puts it. The update will add security fixes and performance enhancements along with all of the other goodies that come with Android 2.3. Verizon typically rolls these updates out slowly, so users will have to sit back and wait for the notification on their phones alerting them that the update is ready to download and install.

Cyanogen 9 coming soon to Galaxy Tab 10.1
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsSamsungGALAXY Tab 10.1
The last we had heard, Cyanogen 9, which is based on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, wouldn't be rolling out for a couple months, or at least we shouldn't bother asking Team Douche about it for a couple months. But, now it seems Galaxy Tab 10.1 users may get in on the fun much sooner.
Just last week Steve Kondik, founder of Cyanogen, tweeted that work had begun on Cyanogen 9. A mere four days later, he posted on Google+ (he plussed? he GPed? We need a good verb for it...) and said that Cyanogen 9 is "great" on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, and should be "coming soon" to CyanogenMod mirrors.
We expected work on Cyanogen 9 to go faster on Honeycomb tablets because the drivers for those devices...

LG, Prada officially renew phone partnership, confirm v3.0 for early 2012
Like UnlikeFiled in: LG
Five years after first linking up for a "new iconic phone" (the first one may be best remembered for slightly predating the iPhone's large touchscreen / few buttons look) LG and Prada have announced the renewal of their exclusive phone partnership, as well as the planned arrival of the third phone in the series early next year. The teaser image (above) shows a design that resembles the Prada K2 / P940 phone we've seen in leaked pictures and passing through the FCC recently, and will supposedly feature Android 2.3, a 4.3-inch display, and 21Mbps HSPA+ speeds in a 9mm thin frame. Check out the press release after the break and try to remember where you left your old Prada Link watch.

Galaxy Nexus shipping now in America: unlocked for $750 through Expansys

Pre-order, pre-schmorder. Americans more anxious to blow $750 on the planet's first Ice Cream Sandwich handset than anything on Black Friday can do so right now, as Samsung's Galaxy Nexus is shipping from the warehouses at Expansys. We've received independent confirmation that orders placed today are shipping out, with the aforesaid tally nabbing you an unlocked 16GB GSM (HSPA+) build that plays nice with T-Mobile and AT&T's 3G bands. What it won't nab you, however, is a pack of nabs. Can't win 'em all, right?

HTC G1 gets a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsT-MobileGoogleG1Android 4.0
Even though Ice Cream Sandwich is popping up everywhere since its source code was released to the public, we've got to give a shout out now that its been squeezed onto the original Google phone, HTC's G1. The G1 was last seen sporting an unofficial Honeycomb port, and now jcarrz1 from XDA-Developers is showing off his device running Android 4.0 in this video. So far the touchscreen is (slowly) working, along with all apps and "ICS goodies", though WiFi, Bluetooth and rotation are still out. That's a nice effort for a device that some said wouldn't see any versions past 1.5, so press play and witness the unholy fusion of Android's past and present working all at once, or hit the source link b...

Google ends Wave, Buzz, Knol, Health and Google Desktop

Most of us in the U.S. are preparing for Thanksgiving, but it looks like Google is getting a head start on its New Years resolutions. As part of an effort to slim down the company’s multiple projects and put more focus on important sectors, it’s ending service for a handful of once-vibrant projects. Among the biggest are Google’s ambitious but under-used collaboration tool, Wave, Twitter competitor Google Buzz, Wikipedia-like aggregate Knol, medical records engine Google Health, and PC file-searching tool Google Desktop.

iOS 5 code references support 'J2' model iPad 3
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsTabletsAppleiOS 5iPad 3
Code strings in iOS 5 support the existence of the "J2" model iPad 3 claimed by Digitimes, according to 9to5Mac. The device is listed alongside familiar codenames for other Apple devices such as the iPhone 4. Apple has allegedly been considering two different designs as a successor to the iPad 2, the J2 being a more advanced device than the J1, also using different dimensions. The iOS 5 code also groups the J2 alongside other 3G-capable hardware.
The J2 is expected to have a extremely high-resolution 2048x1536 display, and by extension twin LED light bars. Few other details have emerged about its design, but parts for an iPad 3 are already believed to be in production. The likely goal is hav...

Microsoft announces Windows-specific Kinect for 2012 release
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksDesktop ComputersMicrosoft
While hackers have been having their way with the Kinect on the PC for a long, long time, Microsoft itself has only recently embraced this sort of behavior. First it was with an official SDK and then, soon after, a follow-up letting things go commercial. We've been eagerly awaiting Office integration -- imagine lazily waving away every boring PPT that lands in your inbox -- but also struggling to figure out just how such a device would fit on our cluttered desks. Microsoft is now promising a PC-specific version to release sometime in 2012, able to focus on objects as close as 50cm from the lens -- quite an improvement given our current Kinect seems unhappy if we're standing anywhere within f...
