HTC faces smartphone ban in Germany
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesHTC
HTC’s German subsidiaries may soon be barred from selling smartphones in the country following HTC’s recent decision to forgo an appeal to a patent lawsuit won by IPCom in 2009. The ban could spell trouble for HTC smartphone sales during the holiday season. “We will likely use the right awarded by the courts, likely resulting in HTC devices disappearing from shops during the crucial Christmas season,” IPCom said, noting that it hopes to enforce an injunction against HTC’s devices as soon as possible. HTC did not specifically say why it decided to pull its appeal, although The Guardian said HTC has previously indicated that its appeal argument was redundant. ”While HTC can try to oppose the e...

Verizon Galaxy Nexus pre-orders may begin tomorrow
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungVerizon WirelessGALAXY Nexus
There still has been no official word from Verizon, Google or Samsung about the impending release of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, but the rumors surrounding the launch are beginning to coalesce into believable information.
According to Computerworld, sources at Verizon have confirmed a number of key pieces of the puzzle. Apparently, the leak we saw over the holiday weekend about the on-contract price of the Nexus being $199 is also true. And, new information has confirmed both the release date and the pre-order dates.
One of the most helpful reports even came from a customer. Mike Peak apparently contacted Verizon to detail his anger over the handling of this release, after a number of e-mails...

AT&T today announced the LG Nitro HD, a new Android smartphone that supports AT&T's Long Term Evolution 4G and HSPA+ networks, and includes a 4.5-inch AH-IPS (Advanced High-Performance In-Plane Switching) display with 1280 x 720 pixels for HD resolution. LG says the display offers 500 nit brightness, which lets it be used in direct sunlight, and RGB stripe pixels, which it says offer better color representation. Other features of the Nitro HD include a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, 8-megapixel camera, 4GB of built-in memory (plus microSD support), Wi-Fi Direct, and DLNA. It runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Best Buy runs out of BlackBerry PlayBook stock, cancels orders
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsRIM BlackBerryPlayBook
It looks like Best Buy over-promised to customers eager to snag a BlackBerry PlayBook for $300 off. Despite having the same attractive offer as many retailers over Black Friday and the weekend, Best Buy appears to be unable to fulfill many (and some say all) orders of the BlackBerry PlayBook. Prices were as low as $200, so as you can expect there was a lot of interest in the tablet as a holiday gift. Finding the cheap 16 GB model at retail stores might be a little tricky at this point, but it looks like stock is still strong when ordering directly from RIM at ShopBlackBerry.com.

Apple Store app tells employees when you arrive at a store
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Apple Stores have taken off from just a couple of stores to a global retail network, a place where creatives (and baristas) hang out in an Apple-incensed atmosphere. An Apple Store stands out with the Genius Bar offering personal assistance, but the newest addition to the retail experience is possibly even more interesting. A new system allows employees to track users who have already made a purchase via the free Apple Store application in the store. This is aimed at speeding up shopping, but could it be a bit too much for those who value their security and privacy?
To answer that, one would first need to understand the way the system functions. Basically, Apple Store employees have an iPod ...

Android fans could have a big day coming up next week as three sought-after devices are rumored to be launching on December 8th. DROID 4 accessories leaked: lapdocks, HD docks and wireless keyboard with trackpad
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesMotorolaDROID 4
Well what do you know – Verizon Wirelessmay actually launch the DROID 4 on December 8th, as we reported before. Or at least the growing number of information we’re getting about the QWERTY keyboard Android smartphone suggests so.
The latest info we got about Moto’s upcoming device shows us compatible accessories. As you’re about to see, future DROID 4 owners we’ll be able to connect it to a LapDock, HD dock or wireless keyboard with trackpad. I can’t recall seeing such keyboard before and I’m pretty confident it will also be able to sing along other Motorola smartphones like the DROID RAZR, DROID Bionic and Photon 4G.

ARM launches own Android development kit for improved energy performance with its chipsets
Like UnlikeFiled in: CPU
Considering that ARM's chip architecture is found in the vast majority of smartphones today, a new Android development kit issued by the Brits can only be welcome news.
The DS-5 Community Edition kit promises up to 4 times faster application performance than Java code, and differs from Google's own SDK and NDK in that it is optimized for energy efficiency.
Coming straight from the source we've no doubt that the DS-5 CE code can lead to more power-thrifty applications and software on Android devices, and hope that developers will take a long and hard look into it when compiling for ARM-based chipsets.

Amazon Kindle Fire registers strong Black Friday sales, 8 week on top of Amazon's charts
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsAmazonKindle Fire
The Amazon Kindle Fire might not be a direct iPad competitor, but it’s shaping up to be the second most successful tablet on the market. Amazon has issued a rosy press release confirming the huge demand for the Kindle Fire, which has stayed on top of Amazon.com’s best selling devices for 8 weeks in a row.
The $199 7-inch tablet offers a heavily skinned version of Android and serves more as a gateway to Amazon’s massive ecosystem of content rather than offering the full-fledged Android experience. To confirm that, estimates have revealed that Amazon might be selling the Fire at a loss, hoping to reap the benefits of having more customers in its ecosystem. Along with the lack of Android Marke...

Apple recorded its best-ever sales day this Black Friday
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Black Friday has passed and if you survived the craziness, you can tell the story, but what you probably didn’t know is that none other but Apple broke its sales record on that very day. Initial forecasts were for a four-fold increase in sales on Black Friday as Apple actually offered the lowest price on the most sought after devices of the season like the iPad 2. Customers however were more active than expected and the projected sales were surpassed by 7pm.
“Apple Retail was forecast and broke Retail sales records all over the country today, this is from [redacted] today, the forecast today is more than 4 times what we normally do. We broke the forecast by 7pm,” a source inside Apple Retail...

Apple serves iOS 5.1 beta to developers
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleiOS 5
Yesterday afternoon Apple started distributing iOS 5.1 beta 1 for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch to registered developers. The new version of the OS offers a number of new developer tools for coders and addresses some bugs in music playback and other functions. Apple did not say whether or not iOS 5.1 finally fixes the battery life issues that some users have faced since upgrading to iOS 5 and were not completely resolved in iOS 5.0.1. The beta is available to registered developers now and will likely be made available as an update for all users in the near future, though Apple has not announced a timeframe for a public release just yet.

SteelSeries lends Fnatic support to limited edition gaming mouse and headset
Like UnlikeFiled in: HeadphonesMouse DevicesSteelSeries7HSensei
We know who SteelSeries is going to be supporting at this winter's DreamHack gaming competition in Sweden. The peripheral maker has just announced new versions of its Sensei mouse and 7H headset, decked out in the black-and-orange regalia of Team Fnatic. While there's little difference in the products from their vanilla versions, SteelSeries says that Fnatic collaborated in the development of the original equipment — albeit along with several other teams, which makes us wonder what Fnatic did to get the gig. Maybe the folk at SteelSeries are into orange this season.
In any case, it's easy to see what's in it for Fnatic. The $99.99 Sensei mouse features 8 buttons and highly customizable sensi...
