Power struggles amid display manufacturers, as E Ink Holdings (EIH) apparently suspends its fringe-field switching (FFS) LCD panel production agreement with LG Display and instead shifts manufacture to rival CPT. FFS displays are a key rival to the IPS panels that LG Display and others supply Apple for the iPad, promising wide viewing angles among other benefits. In addition to ending the FFS production agreement, EIH will buy back bonds in its Hydis display subsidiary, DigiTimes reports, which LG Display had bought as part of its original agreement back in January 2010.

Dell posts misleading graphics card advice, apologizes and pulls it

Dell's efforts to entice prospective customers to upgrade their graphics cards have played a little too loose with the truth recently, which has been spotted by sharp-eyed members of Reddit. The company's "Help me choose" pop-up assistant on Optiplex machines featured the above image purporting to show a side-by-side comparison of how the Windows desktop looks on "standard" and "high-end" graphics cards. Needless to say, even the feeblest integrated GPU can successfully render a still desktop without the blur that Dell presents in its comparison, and the company has been alerted to its own misrepresentation by PC Pro.

Microsoft Working On Not One, But Two New Xbox Product Lines

Microsoft Working On Not One, But Two New Xbox Product Lines

Posted on Nov 28, 2011 by MG1

Finally, next generation gaming consoles are around the corner. It will have an uplifting effect on the entire gaming industry as it will raise the bar for visual and technical detail in games. Many of today's games are designed keeping consoles in mind, and so their PC platform versions don't look much more than what has come to be known as "console-ports". There are a few exceptions to this, but it would be refreshing to see most game developers move on to creating games that take advantage of today's insanely powerful PC platform, because the console platform will have caught up technologically.
Rumors have it, that Microsoft will be developing not one, but two product lines that succeed...

AT&T and T-Mobile USA flounder as disaster deal crumbles

AT&T and Deutsche Telekom’s decision to withdraw their FCC merger application yesterday is a sign that the deal is dead in the water, analysts and industry agrees, with the final question not whether the acquisition goes ahead but how much pain each carrier suffers as it fails. Deutsche Telecom is expected to in effect sink T-Mobile USA rather than commit the investments the carrier needs in order to remain competitive in the US market, though the exact way in which the company would be shuttered is unclear.

BlackBerry Bold 9790 Indonesia debut makes iPhone-style riot

Posted on Nov 28, 2011 by MG1

The launch of the BlackBerry Bold 9790 in Indonesia's capital of Jakarta on Friday gave RIM a rare Apple-like level of demand that also took an unfortunate turn. A report from the event through the Jakarta Globe had up to 90 people face minor injuries like broken bones after a crush and queue jumping triggered by a rumor spread that the Pacific Place Mall store wouldn't have enough of the new smartphone to supply everyone. As many as 200 public and private security officers had to step in to restore order.
The country has been friendlier to the BlackBerry as a whole than most parts of the world, where Apple and Google's Android are taking over, but it triggered the queuing more commonly asso...

BlackBerry Curve 9380 now on Telus

Posted on Nov 28, 2011 by MG1

After appearing in the Telus winter catalog earlier this month, the BlackBerry Curve 9380 is now shipping from the Canadian carrier. The 3.2-inch all-touch smartphone is priced at $49.99 with a three-year contract or $369.99 without one, and the Telus and BlackBerry sites confirm its 480 x 360 screen, 806MHz processor, 512MB of RAM, and 5-megapixel camera. Sadly, the Telus version of the 9380 only comes with 512MB of internal storage, not 1GB as previously announced, although it does include a 2GB microSD card.

Google piracy filter removes top BitTorrent sites from autocomplete and Instant search results

Google piracy filter removes top BitTorrent sites from autocomplete and Instant search results

Posted on Nov 28, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Google

Late last year, Google made changes to how its autocomplete and Instant search services dealt with piracy-related terms like "BitTorrent" — it blocked them entirely. Now Google's taking the fight directly to sites like The Pirate Bay, ISOHunt, and TorrentReactor by blocking their proper names from autocomplete and Instant. These results are not being filtered out of Google's search index entirely — Google just isn't making it any easier for casual pirates to get to these sites. We did some testing of our own, and found that while the piracy filter is largely effective, there a few inconsistencies. While "The Pirate Bay" is completely blocked from autocomplete and Instant results, a search fo...

HTC re-evaluates S3 Graphics deal in light of patent defeat

HTC re-evaluates S3 Graphics deal in light of patent defeat

Posted on Nov 28, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: HTC

Taiwanese phone manufacturer HTC is said to be re-evaluating whether to proceed with the intended $300 million purchase of S3 Graphics after the company suffered a defeat in its ITC patent dispute against Apple earlier this week.
Investors were concerned initially about the S3 acquisition because HTC's chairperson, Cher Wang, owned a stake in the business. Citigroup also questioned the deal, saying HTC could have just licensed the patents it needed to gain some leverage over Apple. The financial conglomerate later downgraded HTC's stock investment rating and prompted a drop in the company's stock value.
"HTC had decided to acquire S3 Graphics based on the strong belief that evidences of pate...

Verizon hires for LTE roaming in Canada, Europe

Verizon hires for LTE roaming in Canada, Europe

Posted on Nov 28, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Verizon Wireless

Verizon Wireless has posted a job listing for a Global LTE Roaming Manager position. The description reveals that the posting is based in New Jersey and requires the ideal candidate to manage Canadian and Western European markets, suggesting Verizon users might eventually travel on 4G without having to get a special phone. Canada currently uses the 1,700MHz and 2,100MHz bands for 4G, not Verizon's 700MHz, though a potential auction might bring the 700MHz frequencies to Canada.
The task of integrating LTE is complicated as Europe combines 800MHz and 2,600MHz bands for the job, depending on the landscape. There is also a push to make the 1,800MHz band the global standard for LTE, which would f...

Kleissner created a Windows 8 bootkit that can bypass the User Account Control using just 14KB of exploit code. It’s said to be the first proof-of-concept to find a vulnerability in Windows 8 and he’s posted a demo video of the process.
