Microsoft rumored to be working on Office for iPad
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsMicrosoftAppleiPadiPad 2
The folks over at The Daily claim to have obtained information that Microsoft is planning on releasing a version of Office for the iPad. With Office being Microsoft’s second biggest seller, second only to Windows, and the iPad accounting for over 80 percent of the tablet market, it appears that an Office for iPad app would be a powerhouse release for Microsoft.
Since Apple has already established a $10 price point for its productivity iPad apps, such as Pages, Numbers, and Keynote, The Daily is speculating that Microsoft will release around the same $10 mark in order to be competitive.
Microsoft is also working on the next edition of Office that will be fully compatible with OS X Lion as wel...

Facebook settles privacy suit with FTC; will submit independent audits for 20 years
Like UnlikeFacebook settled a privacy lawsuit with the Federal Trade Commission on Friday and agreed to submit independent audits for the next 20 years. The FTC had accused the social network of being deceptive in its privacy practices, Reuters explained. ”Facebook’s innovation does not have to come at the expense of consumer privacy,” FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz said. Facebook will create two positions dedicated to privacy, including a chief privacy officer. In addition, Reuters said the social network must be transparent about what it does with personal user data in the future and it must receive user permission before changing how it shares private user data. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said he “is ...

FCC Provides Partial Explanation for AT&T Denial
Like UnlikeFiled in: AT&T
The Federal Communications Commission today provided a peek at the reasoning it employed when examining AT&T's proposed acquisition of T-Mobile USA. The FCC said that its analysis indicates that combining AT&T and T-Mobile's networks would result in some network efficiencies, but it believes AT&T has overstated what those efficiencies will be. The FCC is concerned that the roaming and backhaul markets will be severely impacted if the merger is allowed; it believes that any cost savings realized by the merger (unlikely as they are) will not be passed down to consumers; it believes that AT&T will eventually upgrade its entire HSPA+ footprint to LTE anyway; and the FCC believes there will be si...

Amazon Kindle Fire hacked to run CyanogenMod 7
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsAmazonKindle Fire
Though Amazon may have buried Android under a deep layer of custom interfaces on the Kindle Fire, underneath it all, it is still Android at its base, which means that enterprising hackers are going to tinker with it. That tinkering is already bearing fruit, as everyone's favorite custom Android ROM, CyanogenMod 7, has been shown booting on the Kindle Fire.
The developers that got CyanogenMod working on the Fire have not yet released it for public consumption, as it is mostly a proof of concept at this point. Its not for the faint of heart either, as it does not have the Amazon Silk Browser or the tight integration with Amazon's book, music, and video services - arguably the most valuable par...

Some Galaxy Nexus users reporting odd battery readings
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGALAXY Nexus
The rumors we had heard about the Samsung Galaxy Nexus having very solid battery life do seem to be true, many users are reporting a couple days of use without charging, but there are also reports of odd readings with the battery monitor.
There have been various reports that the battery monitor on the Nexus won't see much of a dip, but then will drop fairly quickly once it's past the first 20% of battery use. Additionally, the last 20% can often last a very long time. There have also been reports in the MoDaCo forums about large dips on the battery monitor overnight, as if the phone isn't going into sleep mode properly.
Of course, these are all unofficial reports, and don't even come from o...

BlackBerry PlayBook rooted, may eventually run full Android
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsRIM BlackBerryPlayBook
An exploit found in the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet a few months ago has begun to bear fruit for a trio of scrappy developers. The rooting application, which will be made publicly available within the next week, will be called Dingleberry, and lets you do a few cool things. Hulu, which had previously been blocked when visited through the BlackBerry browser, is now accessible. Another neat, though less exciting possibility is use of the PlayBook’s LED, which so far only blinks when powering up or charging when the device is turned off. Apparently there’s a blue LED in there that’s never used in any official capacity which we can see above. Root access also allows for remotely changing the back...

Nokia N9 software update PR 1.2 screenshots leak
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIAN9
Most people who either already picked up the N9 or are seriously considering buying it this holiday shopping season know full well that it’s the first, last, and only device that the Finnish handset maker will release running MeeGo/Maemo/Harmattan. That means developers don’t really want to support it since there’s no future in the ecosystem, not to mention the fact that Nokia refused the launch N9 in some of the world’s largest markets, instead opting to release it in a limited number of smaller countries. Now that being said, Nokia’s got a track record of keeping their devices up to date. If you’re lucky enough to own a Symbian^3 device then you’ve already experienced the upgrade to Symbia...

RIM dishes more details on Mobile Fusion - will support "consumerization" of mobile enterprise
Like UnlikeFiled in: RIM BlackBerry
We reported this morning on the announcement of Research in Motion’s new Mobile Fusion IT product, which will bring greatly simplified mobile device management to enterprise customers. RIM held a business webcast on it later in the day, and fleshed out both the offering itself and RIM's perspective on the future of mobile devices in the workplace.
Mobile Fusion will allow 10,000 mobile devices to be controlled from a single control console, can handle multiple devices per user, and can manage iOS, Android, and QNX devices in addition to current BlackBerry devices.
Perhaps most interesting was their positive embrace of the consumerization of mobile devices in the enterprise. In the past consu...

Samsung may exit netbook business in 2012
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksSamsung
Samsung is considering an exit from the low-margin netbook business as soon as next year according to a recent report. French CNET blog Blogeee claims to have obtained an email sent by the South Korea-based electronics giant to several of its partners. “Following the introduction of our new strategy in 2012, we stop the product range in 10.1” (Netbook) in Q1 2012 for the benefit of Ultraportables products (11.6 and 12 inches) and ultrabooks to be launched in 2012,” the email reportedly stated (machine-translated). The matter could be one of semantics, however — Samsung’s “ultraportable” class may include low-cost notebooks driven by inexpensive ATOM processors. Samsung did not immediately re...

Ban on Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1 reversed by Australian Court, Apple to appeal
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsSamsungAppleGALAXY Tab 10.1
Last month, Apple won a preliminary injunction from an Australian court which in effect banned Samsung from selling its flagship tablet, the Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1, in the country. Apple had alleged that the Korean based manufacturer infringed upon its patents and the court initially agreed. Hoping to somehow salvage the holiday season, Samsung quickly appealed the ruling with the company's lawyer Neil Young (who does not have a "Heart of Gold") saying that the tablet was dead if it could not be offered for the holiday season.
As we reported last week, the Australian appeals court seemed to agree with Samsung's position that banning the tablet from being sold in the country was too harsh of...

Even After Withdrawing Its Application, AT&T Hits Another Huge Hurdle In T-Mo Deal
Like UnlikeFiled in: T-MobileAT&T
In the wake of withdrawing its application to acquire T-Mobile, AT&T has hit yet another obstacle otherwise known as the FCC. See, before AT&T pulled its application, the FCC had big plans to put the deal before an administrative law judge, effectively prolonging the process and magnifying the details of the merger. As part of those big plans, the FCC had compiled an 109-page report with their findings during the review process. AT&T had expected this massive report to stay under the rug since it had withdrawn its application, but the FCC feels it “furthers transparency.”
And what, might you ask, is in this staff report?
Really, really bad news for AT&T. From the FCC’s official release:

Gigabyte updates its netvertible range with the 11.6-inch Booktop T1132
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksGIGABYTEBooktop T1132
With Gigabyte's gaming motherboards doing so well, it's nice to be reminded that the company makes whole PCs too. The latest in its Booktop line of swiveling tablet hybrids is the T1132, which trumps the T1125 with a 1.6GHz Core i5-2467M processor and a GeForce GT520M GPU with 1GB and NVIDIA Optimus switching technology. You get one USB 3.0, one USB 2.0, eSATA and HDMI on the 1.76kg (3.9-pound) lappie itself, but you can add more ports and an optical drive with the optional docking station. There's no indication as to availability or whether it'll cost more or less than the T1125's original $1300 asking price, but you could always try to snag a free one via Gigabyte's wanton Facebook bribery...

FBI arrests four hackers hired to infiltrate AT&T
Like UnlikeFiled in: AT&T
Earlier this week, AT&T claimed to be investigating an intrusion attempt on its system. However, the company said it did not believe any accounts were compromised. Reports are now surfacing that AT&T has been working with the FBI and Philippine law enforcement to apprehend attackers, although a link between the two events has not been confirmed.
The Philippine's Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) stated, "The hacking activity resulted in almost $2 million in losses incurred by the company", referring to AT&T's involvement as a target of the attack.

Government: School ICT programmes 'need reform'
Like UnlikeThe government has backed calls to change the way schools teach ICT, saying that the current programme is "in need of reform".
The Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) responded to the Next Gen report published by Ian Livingston and Alex Hope earlier this year, which criticised UK schools for failing to teach students programming code.
"The Government recognises that the current ICT programme is insufficiently rigorous and in need of reform," noted the response published today, going on to point out that a review of the national curriculum was launched in January this year.
Effective
However, the government is wary of including specific skills like coding in the curriculum, saying t...
