Ubuntu May Be Coming to a TV Near You

Posted on Nov 30, 2011 by MG1

According to Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth, there are a few developers who want to develop such a platform and have met in a chat to nail down some of the priorities of a Ubuntu-TV project.
There are no surprises in the first batch of ideas or initial mockups that may blow your socks off. Shuttleworth noted that it will have to be a 10-foot interface for watching media with remote control support, cloud and/or server storage, physical media playback, Ubuntu One accounts, installable image, easy configuration, integration with other Ubuntu devices, portable devices control, as well as media sharing and the option for media purchases.

The data meteorologists at Cisco say the upcoming forecast extending into the year 2015 calls for a 12-fold increase in global cloud traffic, compared to 2010. Cisco doesn't expect data center traffic to grow quite as steadily, but it will still zoom past 2010 levels and show a four-fold increase by 2015, according to data outlined in Cisco's latest study, "Cisco Global Cloud Index: Forecast and Methodology, 2010-2015."
Cisco's report is filled with staggering numbers, all of which revolve around cloud based traffic. According to Cisco, global cloud traffic will increase from 130 exabytes (EBs) in 2010 to 1.6 zettabytes (ZBs) in 2015 as businesses and consumers move into the so-called zettab...

Google redesigns navigation bar for consistent user experience

Google redesigns navigation bar for consistent user experience

Posted on Nov 30, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Google

Search giant Google’s just announced a completely redesigned navigation bar that aligns with the redesigns we’ve already seen for Google Search, Maps, News, Reader, and Gmail. The dark gray on top has finally been removed, the redesigned bar opting for a light gray tone across all Google products for a more consistent user experience. Hovering your mouse pointer over the Google logo drops down a menu with links to Google+, Image Search, Maps, and other products, gone are the static links for Google Calendar or Docs. The Google+ push clearly continues here with a share button integrated across all Google properties (something that Google is seemingly trying to do with every Google product the...

U.S. Judge Orders Hundreds of Domains Seized, De-Listed from Search

U.S. Judge Orders Hundreds of Domains Seized, De-Listed from Search

Posted on Nov 30, 2011 by MG1

A U.S. federal judge in Nevada has ruled on a series of requests from luxury goods maker Chanel allowing the company to seize several hundred domain names thought to be selling counterfeit goods. For good measure, the ruling also forces all search engines and social media websites to censor mentions of the offending domains. The court specifically called out Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Bing, Yahoo, and Google.
The troubling thing about the ruling is the apparent slapdash way the investigation was done. When Chanel added 228 sites to the nearly now 700-large pile in the case, it ordered merchandise from just three of them to verify it was fake. The remainder were deemed counterfeiters based o...

Acer Liquid Express includes NFC, is free with contract in UK

Posted on Nov 30, 2011 by MG1

Acer's Liquid Express is now shipping, and if there's anything memorable about the phone, it's that it might finally help NFC spread to the mid-range Android market. The 3.5-inch Express is the same size as most of the Liquid line, includes the same 5-megapixel camera, and has the 800MHz processor of the Liquid MT. There's no word yet on internal memory, but it comes bundled with a standard 2GB microSD card. It's also free with even the cheapest two-year contracts on both T-Mobile and Orange. That means the Liquid Express is a cheap way to join the NFC future, although you'll be doing it on a phone with specs that will rapidly be from the past.

AMD 'Not Competing with Intel Anymore'

Yesterday a big discussion already started in our forums after the an AMD spokesman made a remarkable remark.
"We're at an inflection point," said AMD spokesman Mike Silverman, according to a Mercury News report. "We will all need to let go of the old 'AMD versus Intel' mindset, because it won't be about that anymore."
Speculations are that AMD simply might halt high-end processors and focus more on mobile parts like the current Llano processors. We can already see processor prices rise ...

Microsoft sells nearly 1 million Xbox 360s in record week in Xbox history

Posted on Nov 30, 2011 by MG1

The aging Xbox 360 just recorded the biggest sales week in its not-quite-venerable history, moving nearly one million units over the seven day period, specifically selling more than 960,000 consoles in the U.S. during the week of Black Friday. For a console that’s entering the seventh year of its product lifestyle, that’s one very impressive statistic. Of course, Black Friday and Cyber Monday are the pivotal factors here, but the numbers themselves are still stellar, to say the very least.

Epson Gives Inside Look at 3D Projector Technology

Epson Gives Inside Look at 3D Projector Technology

Posted on Nov 30, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: ProjectorsEpson

Epson unveiled earlier this year their very first 3D projectors. Today, the company gave an inside look at what makes their projectors stand above the rest in 3D technology. The main feature for their 3D projectors is the impressive brightness level. These high levels are required in order to prevent the image from dimming when the user wears 3D glasses. Active shutter glasses have lenses that switch between clear and black. The switching is so fast that it gives the illusion that the user is looking through tinted glasses. To fix the brightness issues with active 3D technology, Epson increased the brightness with their new Bright 3D Drive System. This system doubles the refresh rate of imag...
