China could be leveraging electronic exports to spy on the US
Like UnlikeThe United States is forcing telecommunications companies like AT&T and Verizon to hand over sensitive data regarding their network infrastructure to sniff out potential Chinese spies. Officials are concerned that China may be leveraging their exports into the county to spy on the US.
The US Commerce Department sent out a survey in April asking for detailed records regarding foreign-made software and hardware that telecommunications companies, software makers and information-security companies are using. Specifically, the survey requested to know the manufacturer of equipment including optical-transmission components, base-station controllers and transceivers.

GCHQ recruiting intelligence specialists through viral code-cracking game
Like UnlikeA seemingly innocent online code-cracking game could be your ticket to a career in intelligence. Users that can solve the puzzle correctly before the December 12 deadline are being invited to apply for a job with UK-based GCHQ.
GCHQ is one of three UK intelligence agencies and part of the UK’s National Intelligence Machinery. The group works in partnership with the Security Service (also known as MI5) and the Secret Intelligence Service (otherwise known as MI6) to protect national security interests. GCHQ is looking to hire up to 35 new members in the coming months and are using the puzzle game as an early interview of sorts.

Gingerbread now on more than half of Android devices
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid 2.3
Android Froyo was dethroned as the most popular Android version recently and Gingerbread-running handsets became more and more popular. They now account for more than a half of all Androids out there. Gingerbread versions from 2.3.3 and higher are the most common ones and this is good news for those fearing fragmentation on Android.
Froyo now accounts for just above a third of all Android devices, and the third most popular version is Android 2.1 Eclair with 9.6% but on the way out.
Donut and Cupcakce by now are almost extinct with shares of 1.3% and 0.8%, but as rare as they are, they are still comparable to the tiny share of Honeycomb tablets which stood at a mere 2.4% of all devices runn...

ISPs reportedly taking wrong approach to winning bandwidth battle
Like UnlikeData caps that wireless carriers and internet service providers often implement on heavy data users may not be the right solution for avoiding network congestion. Instead, ISPs and carriers should throttle data speeds to ensure solid network performance. Research firm Diffraction Analysis recently set out to discover if “data hogs” — the few people on the internet who consume more data than the general population — really do have a negative effect on the overall quality of a network. Read on for more.
The firm studied a medium-sized company in North America and tracked the data usage of its employees throughout the day. The average users on the network consumed an estimated 9.6GB of data ove...

MasterCard and mFoundry partner to offer NFC payments within mobile banking apps
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
Hoping to add more punch to the standard mobile banking app, mFoundry has announced that it will be making MasterCard's NFC feature PayPass available in its financial apps. What that translates to for the mobile banking user is a quick and easy way to pay without having to use an additional service like Google Wallet or whatever Isis has up its sleeve. mFoundry currently provides mobile banking services for more than 560 financial institutions and credit unions including PNC, Bank of America and Citi -- so chances are, if you're using a mobile banking app, it's powered by mFoundry. Sadly, the same cannot be said for the extremely limited amount of NFC phones that can actually support the fea...

Apple: We Don’t Use Carrier IQ… In Most Of Our Products… Anymore
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesApple
The tech world is up in arms this week about Carrier IQ, the mobile data logging software that comes pre-installed (and rather well hidden) on an increasingly huge number of handsets. It’s still entirely unclear as to what’s being logged and, more importantly, what (if anything) is being sent off the handset — but one thing’s for sure: people don’t like it.
As the controversy swells, companies are rushing to distance themselves from the matter. The latest ones looking to get on the right side of the air gap? Apple.

Ice Cream Sandwich has a hidden "Rocket Launcher"
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid 4.0
In case you've ever dreamed of flying through the cosmos with app icons zipping past you, you're in luck because for some reason or another Google has another Easter Egg hidden within Ice Cream Sandwich for you. This is of course in addition to the uber-weird homage to the nyan cat meme that Google also built into ICS, but at least this one is somewhat useful.
This Easter Egg, which is called "Rocket Launcher", is a little bit trickier to find than NyanDroid. For this one, you'll need to install LauncherPro (one of the better launcher replacements anyway), which will let you access Activity Shortcuts. When placing the Activity Shortcut, just choose the Rocket Launcher option from the menu, ...

White Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket arriving on AT&T just in time for the holidays
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungAT&TGalaxy S II Skyrocket
The Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket was among the first LTE-enabled handsets on AT&T, and with its thin profile and dual-core chip, the only thing it was missing was... a white paint job. Well, at least that would have been nice and we can see how many would go for the white version. It seems that AT&T and Samsung also think this way, and the companies have announced that a white Skyrocket is landing on the carrier just in time for the holidays.
The pale Galaxy S II Skyrocket will arrive on the carrier on December 4th and is expected to retail for $249.99 with a contract, the same price as the original, dark version of the handset.
The Skyrocket features a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED Plus screen wit...

Alleged Sony Ericsson Nozomi official render leaks
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSony EricssonXperia S
From the confines of Chinese forums we found this little excerpt from what is claimed to be an official picture of the Sony Ericsson Nozomi. The side render coincides with what we've seen leaked in flesh and blood in the wild before, and confirms the phone is coming in white.
Granted, the image is very small, and the technical specifications are cut out, but you can still see the word "Dual" which would confirm once again that we might be having the first mutlicore Android handset from the company in the face of the Sony Ericsson Nozomi. Another proof is the 1920x1xxx line under the camera section, which would imply 1080p HD video capture that we usually associate with dual-core handsets.

Carrier IQ tracking scandal escalates: it’s not the manufacturers, blame the carriers
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
Carrier IQ is a simple telemetrics company but there’s one thing that makes it stand out from the rest - chances are, it’s on your smartphone and researcher Trevor Eckhart has recently found out that it records your every keystroke, SMS message, phone call and logs a lot of the data you transmit. Scary? Add to that the fact that you can’t remove it, and things start to look very Orwellian.
Apparently, those previously unknown findings weren’t warmly embraced over at Carrier IQ as the company sent an absurd and inimical cease and desist order, a copy of which you can find at the source link at the end of this article. Here’s an extract of Eckhart’s report on Carrier IQ that must have triggere...

Motorola Milestone 2 Gingerbread update starts rolling out today across Europe
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsMotorolaGoogleMILESTONE 2Android 2.3
Motorola has started rolling out Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for its Milestone 2 smartphone in Europe. That, however, doesn’t mean you can get it right away; the new software will be released in stages so even if you can’t download it right now, check back again within few days.
The American handset maker turned to Facebook to spread the good news and we really applaud them for supporting their existing customers. Sure enough, they’re kinda late – but better late than never.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus will get the Adobe goods like Flash and AIR in the next few weeks

Adobe issued a statement that cleared up the confusion about Flash and AIR landing on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Previously it said that the ICS Flash update will come by year-end, and this stays the case.
The wait won't be long, as the minor updates to Adobe Flash 11.1 and AIR 3.1 that will make them ready to work on Android Ice Cream Sandwich, is coming in December.

ISPs May Institute Usage Fees To Counteract Streaming Video Surge
Like UnlikeIf you’ve cut the cable and switched to streaming services like Netflix or Hulu to fill your Sons of Anarchy viewing needs, you might be in for a nasty shock before long: higher prices. No, Netflix isn’t raising its rates again. It’s your Internet connection itself that your wallet should be worried about! Reports say that major U.S. ISPs, including Time Warner Cable, Charter, Cox and AT&T, are experimenting with usage-based Internet fees – not just to quell streaming users’ massive broadband needs, but also to make Netflix less attractive (and traditional cable more attractive) to TV watchers. Most of the largest ISPs sell digital TV services as well, remember?

Nintendo Wii still going strong, sales records smashed
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesNintendoWii
The seventh generation consoles, in tech terms, are pretty ancient. The Xbox 360 landed almost seven years ago to the day - around the same time as Motorola began offering the RAZR V3i handset in gold, and Mozilla went live with Firefox 1.5 - and when the Wii was launched a year later, the iPhone was a just a hopeful dream of fanboys everywhere.
But, along with the PS3, the consoles have survived the test of time and in Microsoft and Nintendo's case are still breaking records.
