Report: Quanta sues AMD over faulty chips

Quanta Computer has filed a lawsuit in a California court against Advanced Micro Devices over faulty chips used in some computers, an accusation disputed by AMD.
Quanta has accused AMD and its ATI Technologies subsidiary of selling chips that could not tolerate some heat levels, making the chips unfit for use in some NEC laptops manufactured by Quanta, according to a news report by Bloomberg. The faulty chips caused the NEC laptops to malfunction, the suit claims.

Thunderbolt initially launched in February when Apple updated the MacBook Pro, but since then the technology has been an Apple exclusive. The understanding was that Thunderbolt would be a universal high speed interface, but uptake outside the Apple ecosystem has been slow. There have been rumors that Thunderbolt would come to PCs in early 2012, but we haven’t seen any concrete evidence of this until today.

Intel OEM Engineers Caught Selling Sample Chips on eBay

Taiwan's Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) arrested four engineers for allegedly selling Intel processors designated as Engineer Samples (ES) on eBay for personal profit. Intel ES chips are the property of Intel and are often sent off to reviewers and OEM manufacturers prior to commercial release in order to test for compatibility. In theory, they're supposed to be returned to Intel.

To make room for the upcoming launch of 22nm Ivy Bridge processors in April 2012, Intel has notified its hardware partners of its schedule for stopping the supply or production of over 25 existing desktop CPU models, according to industry sources in Taiwan.
Intel has issued a notice to suspend the supply of Core i5-661/660, Core i3-530, Pentium E5700 and Celeron E3500 and will cease the production of those models in the second quarter of 2012, the sources indicated.

Atom chip on Android smartphones expected at CES

LG Electronics and Samsung are expected to unveil Android smartphones next week that use Intel's latest Atom chip, dubbed Medfield, analysts said. The move, if it pans out, could portend a shift away from ARM-based chips, which are in 95 percent of smartphones.
The arrival of Atom-based smartphones at the International CES show in Las Vegas would join Google and Intel at the hip, said Jack Gold, an analyst at J. Gold Associates. With Google in the midst of acquiring Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion, at least some Motorola smartphones could be soon running Atom chips, as well.

Talk about multitasking. While LG Electronics gets ready to introduce the world to a 55-inch OLED HDTV at CES next week, the company is also lifting the curtain on the next generation of flat-panel televisions featuring Nano Lighting Technology. Two new sets will comprise LG's new Nano Full LED series, the LW9500 and LW7700, both of which are supposed to produce a brighter, more clear picture than current generation LED TVs.

It's hard to go back to work after a few days off, but HP is sure coming back with a bang. The company this week leaked a video to Engadget that shows an incredibly thin laptop that's believed to be the newest Envy and the latest notebook to join HP's Ultrabook line. The video itself gives away little in the way of information, however, with CES only a week away, it's likely that HP plans to share more about this device in Las Vegas in just a few day's time.

After some availability issues faced by the Transformer Prime in North America, the tablet has now received a series of new complaints regarding battery life, GPS problems and the locked bootloader which were recently addressed in a statement made by Asus officials, softpedia reports:
The first complaints about battery life made their appearance a short while ago, when reviewers have found out that in some tests the Transformer Prime lags behind the original Transformer tablet in this regard.
Soon after this discovery was made, it was also uncovered that the built-in GPS had a series of difficulties when it came to finding and maintaining the connection with navigation satellites.

AMD denies hidden cores in Radeon HD 7970

A leaked Sapphire document revealed a Tahiti GPU with 2304 cores. AMD however confirms that there are no hidden cores. The chip has 2048 shaders, so the 2304 number from Sapphire is likely a mistake, or part of a test by AMD to find out which partners leak specifications to members of the press.

Fujifilm develops FinePix T400 10x entry-level compact superzoom

Fujifilm has developed the FinePix T400, an entry-level compact camera with a 10X zoom lens. The camera is built around a stabilized 16MP CCD sensor and a 28-280mm equivalent lens to offer flexibility at an accessible price point. Its CCD underpinnings limit its video capability to 720p but this is easily accessed with a direct movie record button.

Fujifilm launches XP150 and XP100 rugged, waterproof compacts

Fujifilm has launched the XP150 and XP100, two waterproof, rugged compact cameras. Both are based around 14MP CMOS sensors and 28-140mm equivalent lenses. They are both waterproof to a depth of 10m, shockproof for drops of up to 2m, freezeproof to –10°C and are dust/sand proof. The difference between the models is that the US-only XP100 model doesn't offer GPS, which it uses to offer features such as electronic compass or photo-based navigation.
