Sony didn't hold back its engineers this year when it came to iterating on its extensive lineup of audio products for 2012. The new STR-DH820 AV receiver features five HDMI inputs that'll pass 3D and an integrated iPhone/iPod dock. There are three new Blu-ray enabled home theater systems, the BDV-N890W is leading the way with built-in 802.11N, wireless rear speakers and an iOS app for audio control wherever you put the included HomeShare wireless speaker. There are also two new HomeShare network speakers, the A-NS310 and SA-N4S10, which like its bigger brother, support AirPlay. Finally the very expensive SS-AR2 floor speakers are making their way stateside to replace the SS-AR1. The complete...

Posted on Jan 10, 2012 by MG3

Another year, another slate of new Blu-ray players from Sony. The BDP-S790 is of particular interest with its ability to convert Blu-ray's 1080p to 4K. Both it and the BDP-S590 of course do 3D and include WiFi, which like those before it, facilitates the delivery of more video and audio streaming opportunities than we can list. In addition to favorites like Netflix and Hulu Plus, you can also access the Video Unlimited and Music Unlimited streaming services from the Sony Entertainment Network. If you've ever wished there was an easier way to share what you were watching with your followers and friends, the new Socialize viewing application lets you do just that directly from the player. The ...

Performance zealots will remember the ASUS Z7S WS which went head on with then Intel 'Skulltrail' D5400XS Xeon luxury gaming platform (using dual unlocked QX9775 chips), but since then ASUS has done nothing of that sort, leaving EVGA with the iconic SR-2 to mop up things in the Xeon 55xx/56xx era, as vrzone reports today.

CES 2012: Sony intros Android-based Walkman Z1000 to battle iPod

Posted on Jan 10, 2012 by MG3

Sony unveiled an interesting gem tonight at CES 2012, as it introduced the Android 2.3-powered Walkman Z1000 series Mobile Entertainment Player to go against the iPod touch and the Galaxy Player.
For what is primarily a music player, Sony wanted to make sure this thing has a great music experience. In terms of audio quality, the Walkman Z1000 boasts a “S-Master MX” digital amplifier to reduce unwanted noise and distortion. In terms of usability, there’s a dedicated W button on board. Tapping it instantly launches the music app from wherever you are.

Sony just announced today the official break-up with its Sony Ericsson jailhouse tat, which has been bugging it for quite some time. The mobile phone joint venture with the Swedish telecom company Ericsson had a good run for over a decade, but recently it became an obstacle for Sony's grand "four-screen" idea for seamless convergence across its smartphone, tablet, computer and TV lineups.

Sony announces its Walkman Z Android PMP for the U.S.

Sony announces its Walkman Z Android PMP for the U.S.

Posted on Jan 10, 2012 by MG3

During its CES presentation, Sony announced it will bring its Android-based Walkman Z portable music player to U.S. markets. The device ships with a range of internal storage options, and the usual array of WiFi, DLNA, and Bluetooth connectivity.
While prior Sony PMPs did not officially reach U.S. shores; Sony has decided the time is right to unleash Android Walkman's on North American shores. Smartphones continue to eat into the PMP market – Apple’s iPod sales have contracted as iPhone sales increase – but there is probably a market for people who already have invested in the Android ecosystem who would like a touch-based music device that can use the apps they’ve already paid for.

AT&T serving up wireless data for the PlayStation Vita

AT&T serving up wireless data for the PlayStation Vita

Posted on Jan 10, 2012 by MG3

AT&T has announced it will be the exclusive U.S. wireless carrier for Sony’s upcoming PlayStation Vita release. AT&T will serve up two flavors of its data plans for the new 3G-enabled portable gaming unit – 250 MB for $14.99 and 2GB for $25. While that may seem steep, particularly if you factor in the already high hardware and software costs that are speculated to be the cause of the Vita’s poor sales overseas, the good news is both plans are month-to-month with no contract commitments required.

Nokia CEO: We won't fragment Windows Phone

Nokia CEO: We won't fragment Windows Phone

Posted on Jan 10, 2012 by MG3

Filed in: NOKIA

During the CES 2012 introduction of the Lumia 900, Nokia’s CEO Stephen Elop was touting the fact that the company would have exclusive apps from heavy-hitters on its Lumia line before any other Windows Phone got it. While Nokia needs to stand out from the crowd, Elop clearly stated that the company would never do anything to fragment the platform.

As Nokia and Elop have said many times, it’s now a battle of ecosystems between iOS, Android and Windows Phone. While Apple controls most of the aspects of iOS (the App Store still relies on third-parties for content), Nokia is in a trickier position because the success of HTC and Samsung Windows Phones could eventually help Nokia by raising aware...

Apple's head Tim Cook given stock options worth $376 million, the largest CEO package in a decade

Apple's head Tim Cook given stock options worth $376 million, the largest CEO package in a decade

Posted on Jan 10, 2012 by MG3

Filed in: Apple

Apple has given its current CEO Tim Cook a gigantic retainer package in the form of restricted stock options to vest in 2016 and 2021, says today's proxy filing. The package has been worth north of $376 million based on the August 24 closing price of Apple's shares, when the options were granted.
This way the CEO has every incentive to nurture Apple's stock price for the foreseeable future, and the package may one day be worth over a billion, if Apple continues to shatter its sales records all the way to 2016, when half of the options can be converted.

NVIDIA announces DirectTouch for Tegra3 devices, promises smoother touchscreen experiences

NVIDIA announces DirectTouch for Tegra3 devices, promises smoother touchscreen experiences

Posted on Jan 10, 2012 by MG3

Filed in: nVIDIA

During their CES presentation today NVIDIA introduced a new technology: DirectTouch. Exclusive to Tegra3 devices, DirectTouch will utilize the low-power 5th core to create a smoother, more responsive touchscreen experience.
While Ice Cream Sandwich has brought the smoothest touch and scrolling experience yet to Android, in the end Android still processes some interface interactions in the same CPU stack as the rest of the operating system, which once in a while leads to a lag between a touch input and response. If DirectTouch can reduce or eliminate that by offloading some of the touchscreen computation to the low-power 5th core, NVIDIA might have a real differentiator on its hands.

Then, during the NVIDIA press conference at about 4:45 PM PST, President and CEO of Asus Jen-Hsun Huang, announced the pricing of a 7" Asus tablet, but not the MeMO.
