Apple announced a new program today called Developer ID that will allow third-party developers to distribute apps outside of the Mac App Store, while keeping things safe for consumers. Broadcom unveils Android 4.0 optimized chips for 'affordable' smartphones
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid 4.0
With more and more devices supporting Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, Broadcom has announced a trio of chips designed specifically to take advantage of Google's latest mobile OS — but without breaking the bank. With its new line, Broadcom says smartphone makers will be able to "affordably" deliver a solid Ice Cream Sandwich experience, and the three different chips will support different tiers of devices. The high-end BCM28145 and BCM28155 chips, for instance, feature dual ARM Cortex A9 cores clocked at up to 1.3 GHz, as well as Broadcom's VideoCore graphics engine, which supports playback and recording at up to 1080p. Meanwhile, the lower-end BCM21654G includes ARM Cortex A9 processing at 1...

WikiLeaks Publishes Millions of Emails from Intel Agency Stratfor
Like UnlikeWikiLeaks on Monday began to publish more than 5 million emails from Texas-based intelligence company Stratfor.
The emails span a seven year period beginning in July 2004 and detail Stratfor's dealings with big corporations such as Dow Chemical, Lockheed Martin, and Raytheon, as well as government agencies like the Department of Homeland Security and the Defence Intelligence Agency, WikiLeaks said in a statement.
WikiLeaks did not reveal its source, but Stratfor noted in a statement of its own that in December it suffered a breach at the hands of hacker collective Anonymous, which swiped thousands of emails and published names, contact info, credit card numbers, and other personal data of th...

Intel CEO: mobile phone processor cores dont matter
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesIntel
In a move that the Intel CEO and president joked “may have just started another core war”, Paul Otellini has dismissed the importance of cores in mobile phone CPUs.
With the rest of the market racing towards quad-core processors on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich phones, Otellini very bluntly replied to comparisons with his company’s Medfield processor at the Intel press conference at Mobile World Congress 2012.
“I don’t think it [the number of cores] matters. What matters is the chip itself," he said. "The core comparison is really improper in my mind. What does matter is the performance and the efficiency of that performance.”

Facebook calls for mobile browser and payment standardization
Like UnlikeSince introducing Open Graph, Facebook has driven huge amounts of traffic to external sites like Digg with the sharing feature. Meanwhile, mobile use of the social network has risen over 20 percent, much of that on browsers rather than dedicated apps, and it looks like Facebook is trying to leverage that growth with an increased focus on mobile web apps. This morning, the company announced that it was joining the new W3C Core Mobile Web Platform Community Group, an "industry-wide effort to help accelerate the improvement and standardization of mobile browsers." It's also releasing Ringmark, a testing platform for mobile apps.

Carrier IQ lets carriers open their network quality stats to subscribers
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
Vilified just weeks ago (somewhat inaccurately) for its behavior in collecting network performance metrics directly from subscribers' phones, Carrier IQ is taking the opposite approach at Mobile World Congress this week. The company's IQ Care product — designed to help service reps get a sense of what's wrong with customers' devices when they call in — is being retrofitted with a customer-facing "dashboard" that will allow them to see "health and performance of their device, applications, battery life, network coverage and dropped calls." This won't automatically become available to everyone whose carrier uses Carrier IQ, of course — it'll be up for each carrier to integrate the new option a...

Mozilla's Boot to Gecko project: the internet is your phone
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
We stopped by Mozilla's booth at MWC today, and in addition to all the Firefox promotion the company's doing, it was also showing off something a little different: its Boot to Gecko project. Boot to Gecko is, in essence, a phone operating system that is entirely web- and HTML5-based. From the moment you turn the phone on, everything you see is HTML5. Even the dialer uses Mozilla's "telephony APIs," and is itself web-based. There are no native apps, just a series of the most impressive bookmarks you've ever seen.

Samsung confirms Windows Phone 8 coming by year's end with elements of Windows 8
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsSamsungMicrosoftWindows 8
Samsung can certainly be labeled as a company with much more invested in Android than Windows Phone, but the company has reiterated its resolve to support Microsoft's mobile OS and has confirmed some suspicions about the next big update to Windows Phone 8.
We have heard rumors for a while that Windows Phone 8 (codenamed Apollo) will be released in Q4 of this year, but Samsung confirmed that WP8 will be hitting by the end of the year. Samsung also said that WP8 will "increase the compatibility of the platform", which is somewhat vague, but we're hoping that means that we'll see an increase in supported hardware, possibly meaning higher-resolution screens, multi-core processors and maybe new ...

The Home Depot Brings PayPal to its Nearly 2,000 U.S. Stores
Like UnlikeOperation PayPal in every Home Depot is near completion, as the e-commerce giant has rolled out its in-store payment service to nearly 2,000 stores. This push further into mobile shouldn’t at all be surprising, especially when you consider how its parent company (eBay) has gone big on mobile. Both companies have worked close together since its first announcement of the partnership almost six weeks ago.
When this partnership began, the program only started off with a small five-store pilot with The Home Depot to test PayPal’s ambitious in store payment system. Now things seem to be rolling out in rapid speed. Customers will be able to use the checkout service using a PayPal card, or mobile ph...

Qualcomm: More cores don't equal better phones
Like UnlikeThe big story coming out of Mobile World Congress 2012 is the launch of multiple phones with the quad-core Tegra chipset made by NVIDIA. Consumers may see “quad-core” and immediately think it’s much better than a dual core but Qualcomm is saying that it’s more complicated than that.
While it has its own quad-core chips coming down the line, Qualcomm believes its dual-core S4 will outperform the the quad-core chips from the competition because the company has done a lot of system-wide optimization. Qualcomm’s Rob Chandhok said Qualcomm is focused on providing a great, real-life user experience rather than trying to be first to the market.
He also said that some of the competition brags about ...
