New Google search app for Android gets outed, pulled

Posted on Aug 10, 2011 by MG1

While not in the realm of some of Sony Ericsson's gaffes -- as far as pulled images and news, that is -- Google did its level best by throwing up a new version of its integrated search app for Android and then promptly pulling it. New features in the magically disappearing app include: a svelte new interface with categorized results which puts web hits up top then contacts and more in the rows below. Also added is the ability to long press search history to remove questionable search items and country-specific results in countries with Google domains -- think Google.ca, Google.ch, and so on. This may be part of the big search monster's ongoing efforts to "evolve the Google design and experie...

T-Mobile G-Slate is getting its Honeycomb 3.1 tasting tomorrow

Posted on Aug 10, 2011 by MG1

Not to be forgotten amongst the heap of newer Honeycomb tablets that are on the market, the 3D video recording capable T-Mobile G-Slate is more than likely to start receiving its Honeycomb 3.1 tasting tomorrow; August 10th.
Actually, LG says that they’ll be rolling it out some time today, but device owners would more than likely see it come in tomorrow – especially when it’s being rolled out in waves. Either way, it’s expected to arrive over the course of the next few days for the majority of people.
As we all know, Android 3.1 Honeycomb isn’t a dramatic upgrade, but rather, T-Mobile G-Slate owners will find the host of improvements to be more than satisfactory in the near term. In fact, it ...

Chromium's experimental touch UI demoed on video, made for meaty fingers

Chromium's experimental touch UI demoed on video, made for meaty fingers

Posted on Aug 09, 2011 by MG1

Google was pretty adamant at I/O that Chrome OS would not be coming tablets, but that hasn't stopped its open-source cousin from adding some touch friendly features. Chromium (the browser, not the OS) got its first tablet tweaks back in June, but this is the first time we're seeing them on video. While the larger icons, widgets, and virtual keyboard, may eventually make their way onto the rumored Seaboard, there's no guarantee these (obviously still early) experiments will ever debut as part of Chrome OS or even the browser. Check out the video after the break for a brief glimpse of this work in progress and, if you're feeling adventurous, hit up the more coverage link to download the latest...

I’m Android Watch Now Available For Pre-Order

I’m Android Watch Now Available For Pre-Order

Posted on Aug 09, 2011 by MG1

While I found the I’m Watch ridiculous and feel that wearable tech isn’t nearly as close to being viable as we’ve been led to expect, the watch is actually shipping and will cost $350 when Blue Sky begins selling their pre-orders.
The watch runs a Freescale IMX233 CPU and connects to a cellphone via Bluetooth. It lets you check messages and other wee bits of information and little else.
You can check out the exciting video render at the Blue Sky website, below, and place your order now so you can, eventually, forget about the watch after it runs out of power and you decide it’s too much trouble to recharge.

iOS, Android security flaw shown by 10-year-old girl at Defcon

iOS, Android security flaw shown by 10-year-old girl at Defcon

Posted on Aug 09, 2011 by MG1

A 10-year-old girl has figured out a way to outsmart game developers and cheat at games designed for iOS and Android by exploiting a security vulnerability within the clock system. The cheat works by modifying the clock settings on the device to accelerate time within the game's environment.

Apparently, CyFi, as the hacker calls herself, was bored playing Farmville-type games and wanted to speed up time in the virtual world to make crops grow faster. Her fiddling with the clock on the mobile device revealed a "zero day" exploit that tricked the game into thinking much more time had passed than was actually the case. Circumventing the game's built-in clock advancement cheat blocks involved m...

YouTube for Android updated

YouTube for Android updated

Posted on Aug 09, 2011 by MG1

Google has always had a somewhat idiosyncratic way of numbering its software versions. Sometimes, big software changes get a big number increase, like the jump from Android Gingerbread (2.3) to Honeycomb (3.0/3.1). However, sometimes big number changes fly by (Chrome's newest stable release is version 13, and the Chrome browser isn't even 2 years old yet.) But, with the newest version of YouTube for Android, Google is taking a different path: a minor version number bump (from 2.1.6 to 2.2.14), and brings a couple of very nice features.
Along with the requisite bug fixes, the new version of YouTube will allow you to edit the title, description and privacy of your uploaded videos, and create,...

Google Chrome 13 Now Available to Preload Your Pages

Posted on Aug 08, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Google

Back in June, Google revealed a new search technology in Chrome that would automatically preload webpages before you even click on them. For those on slower internet connections, this could shave off seconds of wait time with every click.
This week Google released Chrome 13, which brings this new preloading technology to the masses. Those who are already using Google Chrome will automatically update upon their next browser restart – but if you haven't installed Chrome yet and you want to check out Google's browser that thinks ahead for you, grab the download right here.

Google's Realtime Search will return, probably sans Twitter

Google's Realtime Search will return, probably sans Twitter

Posted on Aug 05, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Google

Lovers often split up and then get back together. According to Mashable, however, the tiff between Google and Twitter over Realtime Search is taking on a cold air of finality -- even though it seemed kinda temporary at the time. The Big G just reiterated plans to restore its social networking search function, based on Google+ and "other sources," but it made no mention of its former sweetheart. Oh well, a wise person once told us that when it comes to relationships, you should never press rewind.

Security hackers crack Google's Chrome OS using web tricks

Security hackers crack Google's Chrome OS using web tricks

Posted on Aug 05, 2011 by MG1

When Google first introduced its Chrome operating system, the search giant touted its rock solid security. In an effort to keep hackers out, Google automatically installs the operating system on three different hard drive partitions: one swap partition, one encrypted user partition and one read-only operating system root partition. Despite those security enhancements, VentureBeat says researchers Kyle Osborn and Matt Johanson of White Hat Security’s Threat Research Center were able to break into the operating system using “web-based hacker tricks,” that provided access to Google Docs, the address book, Google Voice messages and emails. The two hackers demonstrated how easy it was during the ...

Microsoft says Google is lying in its complaints about patent hoarding

Microsoft says Google is lying in its complaints about patent hoarding

Posted on Aug 05, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: MicrosoftGoogle

Apple sat quiet following Google Chief Legal Officer David Drummond’s rant yesterday, as it always does, but Microsoft was not content letting Drummond air his grievances without responding. Drummond on Wednesday penned a post on Google’s blog claiming that Apple, Microsoft and other companies are joining together to “strangle” Android with patent complaints. With all of the patent-related lawsuits against Android partners right now, this certainly seems like a valid complaint. Highlighting a specific example, Drummond wrote that the companies are “banding together to acquire Novell’s old patents (the “CPTN” group including Microsoft and Apple) and Nortel’s old patents (the ‘Rockstar’ group ...

Google has refreshed its mobile Gmail site for iOS and PlayBook OS devices with new higher-res icons and pull-to-refresh options. According to Google, these improvements make Gmail look sharper and feel smoother when accessed on mobile devices.
The message list can now be refreshed by pulling down on the list on all iOS devices as well as on the BlackBery PlayBook. Users of the iPhone 4 will now see higher-res icons that look better on the Retina Display when browsing Gmail in Mobile Safari. HTC ThunderBolt getting Gingerbread this quarter

HTC ThunderBolt getting Gingerbread this quarter

Posted on Aug 05, 2011 by MG1

The HTC ThunderBolt was the first 4G-enabled smartphone on Verizon's speedy LTE network, but since its launch not much has changed with its software – the handset continues to run on the quickly aging Android 2.2 Froyo, even though back in March HTC spilled the beans about an upcoming Gingerbread update. Well, four months later, it's still coming, but this time we have a particular time period for it – the third quarter of the year.
HTC representatives have been spreading the word about the update which will add Gingerbread tweaks and features, and fix some problems along the way:
“We are working hard to address the issues you have mentioned with future updates for the device. We are excited...
