Samsung reportedly confirms Nexus Prime

Posted on Aug 29, 2011 by MG15

In an attempt to stop the spread of a leaked Nexus Prime firmware build, Samsung’s legal department appears to have confirmed both the existence of the phone and rumors that device was built by Samsung. “It has come to our attention that you are wrongfully in possession of, and intend to release or otherwise publicly disclose without Samsung’s consent, firmware for the Nexus Prime,” a letter obtained by Geek.com said. “The Nexus Prime firmware is the exclusive property of Samsung and/or its partners, suppliers and affiliates.” The letter is signed by Samsung’s General Counsel, Bryan Hopkins, though the source of the letter has removed the name. We’ve reached out to Samsung to confirm the leg...

This is according to the Telegraph, which believes that the service is to launch in the UK within six months despite it getting lukewarm reviews in the US.

Google TV is a set-top box that allows you to watch online content alongside traditional TV channels.

In the UK this is nothing new; the majority of high-end TVs launched this year allow Smart TV functionality, where you can access web content and the myriad catch-up TV services available.

Nexus Prime confirmed by Samsung lawyers

Posted on Aug 26, 2011 by MG15

That another Nexus device existed and would launch as the first phone running Ice Cream Sandwich, we already knew that to be true. It's always been the specifics about the device that have been subject to the rumor tag, but it looks like at least one rumor can be smashed. The Nexus Prime is a Samsung device.

Rumor had it that Samsung was showing off the Nexus Prime at Verizon HQ recently, but that was just a rumor. This information was confirmed by Samsung themselves after company lawyers issued an injunction against someone who had obtained the firmware of the Nexus Prime. Samsung lawyers want to keep that person from sharing the firmware. In the letter, Samsung confirms that the device i...

Google Wallet might roll out on September 1st

Google Wallet might roll out on September 1st

Google’s NFC-based Wallet mobile payment service aims to turn your smartphone into a credit-card replacement and it has the support of a handful of retailers include RadioShack. One of the Shack’s employees however did more to hint about the service release date than Google ever managed to do - basically he revealed September 1st as the exact date when Google Wallet is expected to go live.

Or at least that’s when RadioShack will start supporting it. This would also mean that NFC readers would be installed at the retailer’s numerous locations.

You might wonder, where you’d get all those NFC-enabled phones and rightly so as only a couple of current subsidized handsets come equipped with the ...

First case of Android running on HP TouchPad caught on video

First case of Android running on HP TouchPad caught on video

Posted on Aug 23, 2011 by MG15

What would happen if the HP TouchPad could run Android instead of its native webOS platform? Although it was not originally meant to do that, in terms of hardware, the tablet is more than capable of booting Google's operating system, and there is already a team of developers trying to turn this crazy idea into reality.

However, somebody seems to have beaten them to it. There is a rumor circulating on the web claiming that a Best Buy customer who took advantage of the tablet's aggressively discounted price of $99 received a unit, which had Android 2.2 Froyo installed instead of webOS. Although we cannot confirm the credibility of the story, there is a video showing the Froyo-flavored TouchP...

This beta test, of course, comes ahead of the roll-out of their Kansas City experiment in 1 Gbps fiber internet service. Speedtest results linked and pictured below for you to drool over.

Android (Finally) Taking Steps Towards WebKit And Chromium

Android (Finally) Taking Steps Towards WebKit And Chromium

Posted on Aug 23, 2011 by MG15

Why isn’t Chrome a part of Android? It’s a question as old as time itself. Or at least a few years old. But given that the same company, Google, makes both products, it never made much sense. Now they’re finally taking steps to resolve this. A bit. Maybe.

As a group of Googlers have announced on the WebKit-Dev group today (relayed by Google’s Peter Beverloo), the Android team is now committed to working more closely with the WebKit community. Yes, it’s a bit odd that a product so devoted to “open” wasn’t really working with the open source community before — but hey, better late than never.
