Dell Streak 7 on track to get Honeycomb upgrade
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsDellGoogleAndroid 3.2
Erik Day, Dell's director of marketing for EMEA, has confirmed that the Dell Streak 7 will be getting an upgrade to Android 3.2 (Honeycomb).
Speaking to Thinq, Day demoed the softare on the 7-inch tablets at IFA 2011, but wasn't able to say when the Honeycomb update would come to existing Wi-Fi only Dell Streak 7s.
The Android 3.2 build of Honeycomb was intended to bring the tablet software to smaller than 10-inch slates, so it makes sense for Dell's 7-inch offering to be in line for the upgrade.
Languishing
The Android 3.2 update will take the Streak 7 up to Honeycomb from the seriously outdated Android 2.2 that it's currently languishing on.
This means taking the 7-inch slate to heady new ...

Google bids adieu to 10 products
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Google has had a bit of a clear out just in time for the new term, ditching ten products and services that aren't "improving the lives of billions of people".
Like an eager school girl ditching last year's pencil case in favour of a brand new stationery line up, Google has thrown out its tech equivalents of blunt crayons, chipped rulers and leaking biros ready for a fresh 'fall' start.
So say goodbye to Google Desktop, a plug-in that searched your computer rather than the web and which built-in OS search functions have made somewhat redundant.
Otis the Aardvark
It's also so long, farewell to Aardvark, a social search product that "helped people answer each other's questions" which Google acq...

Google revamps YouTube for Windows Phone
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftGoogleWindows Phone 7
Yesterday, the mobile version of the YouTube webpage mysteriously disappeared for Windows Phone users, but the confusion didn’t last long and Google is back, and it seems the daily absence has yielded only good results as when you access the webpage now it shows a refreshed and cleaner user interface. Why should you care for it? Well, the YouTube app in Windows Phone is nothing but a redirect to the mobile version of the website and when you tap on a video you are taken to the media player.
So now, you have virtually all the options of the desktop version of the website in a nice, touch-enabled redesign, so you can like, dislike, comment and find releated videos quickly. Nothing has changed ...

HTC has the most up-to-date Android phones
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsHTCGoogleAndroid
The Android Update Alliance (AUA) was set up back in May to unite phone makers under the umbrella of timely Android updates, but we haven’t heard a word about the idealistic venture since then.
And just a couple of days ago, we saw that Gingerbread is slowly replacing older versions of the platform, but Froyo is still the dominant flavor. So who can you trust for the fastest updates and the most up-to-date Android versions?
AndroidandMe has taken the time to compile a list of Android handsets with their respective versions from every phone maker from the AUA and has drawn some conclusions.
First of all, the list clearly shows that HTC updates its phones most often, while Samsung, LG and Mo...

Images appear of Honeycomb on HTC Flyer
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsTabletsHTCGoogleAndroid 3.0Flyer
It was only a couple of days ago that a RUU (ROM update utility) leaked online that contained an early build of Android Honeycomb to the HTC Flyer, but now the guys over at XDA have turned that RUU into a flashable ROM.
The screenshots show what Honeycomb looks on the HTC Flyer with the Sense user interface. It is very similar looking to the HTC Jetstream currently available on AT&T. At the moment, this ROM is not quite ready to get pushed out to Flyer owners everywhere. However, it is nice to see that it is possible in the future.
When this ROM becomes available will any of you HTC Flyer owners jump at the chance to put it on your tablet? Keep in mind that you would have to root it if you...

Acer says Google-Motorola deal "a good gift to Microsoft"
Like UnlikeFiled in: MicrosoftAcerMotorolaGoogle
Microsoft will end up being the big winner after Google’s acquisition of Motorola as other Android phone makers will be alienated by the prospect of rivaling with Google - this statement is not a fact, but comes from a senior executive over at Acer.
"They work against some of their clients," Walter Deppeler, Acer's Europe, Middle East and Africa operations president said. "It was a good gift to Microsoft," he added in an interview for Reuters at IFA.
With that in mind, Acer, which recently slipped from being the second-largest PC maker in the world, would be careful when placing its bets on a particular mobile platform. The company would first consider implications of the $12.5 billion Googl...

HTC Flyer Honeycomb update leaked, custom ROM on the way
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsTabletsHTCGoogleAndroid 3.0Flyer
HTC Flyer users, how would you like to see Honeycomb powering your 7 inch tablet? Thanks to a leaked Honeycomb ROM Update Utility (RUU), you can head over to the sourcelink and download what is called a "very early beta build" of Honeycomb for the HTC Flyer. Of course, by doing this you might not be able to root your tablet or put it through the wayback machine to load a more stable version of the OS.
If you want to wait for the custom ROM, well that is an option for you as well. If you go ahead and take the risk of downloading the Honeycomb RUU for your HTC Flyer, let us know how it goes by dropping us a comment in the box below!

Schmidt: Google bought Motorola for more than patents
Like UnlikeFiled in: MotorolaGoogle
Google Chairmain Eric Schmidt was at the keynote speech yesterday during Salesforce.com’s Dreamforce convention and he swatted away a bit of conventional wisdom by saying that Google bought Motorola for more than just patents.
Google plans to spend $12.5 billion to acquire Motorola Mobility and many believed this was due to the patents Motorola owns because this could protect Android from the variety of infringement lawsuits it is facing. You can’t blame people for thinking this, as the official announcement had multiple hardware makers praising the deal because it would “protect Android.”

Nokia exec says Google-Motorola deal won't end Android lawsuits
Like UnlikeFiled in: NOKIAMotorolaGoogle
Android has been hit hard with patents from all sides and when it announced its decision to acquire Motorola Mobility, it almost seemed like that’s the only thing Google could do to protect Android. The move was officially greeted by phone makers like Samsung, LG and HTC, but a Nokia executive said he doubts that the patent portfolio of Motorola would help Android.

Google Boss Schmidt praises Apple, teases new Android devices
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Eric Schmidt is in a good mood. The Google chairman has been heaping praise upon outgoing Apple CEO Steve Jobs, and lauding the recently-aquired Motorola Mobility, teasing us with hints of new products right around the corner.
“We did it for more than just patents,” Schmidt said of the $12.5 billion takeover of Motorola Mobility in an interview by Salesforce.com CEO Marc Benioff. “The Motorola team has some amazing products.”
Previously, debate has raged over Google’s patent wars. In acquiring Motorola, the Big G gained access to more than 17,000 patents which could be wielded in a patent battle against the likes of Apple and Microsoft. Meanwhile, others have claimed Google made the move in ...

Did Google Only Get "Crap Patents" When They Bought Motorola?
Like UnlikeFiled in: MotorolaGoogle
When Google ponied up $12.5 billion to swallow Motorola Mobility, many people thought it was to snare some patents to protect Android from the likes of Apple and Microsoft. But according to a patent expert, all Google got were some "crap patents".
David Martin, the founder and chairman of patent consulting firm M-Cam, says that spending $12.5 billion on Motorola Mobility was "an immense mistake" because Motorola had sold off a lot of its good patents years before. According to Martin, all Google did was paint an immense target on their back.
Google snagged 17,000 patents in the Motorola acquisition (18 of 'em were supposedly very important in protecting Android) but if they didn't do their h...

SSL certificate breach extends beyond Google, over 200 certificates compromised
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
A breach of Dutch SSL certificate authority DigiNotar is reportedly much bigger than initially thought, with more than 200 digital certificates having been stolen in July by hackers who breached the company’s network. Using the stolen certificates, hackers can potentially intercept and even alter data Internet users believe to be secure and encrypted. ”About 200 certificates were generated by the attackers,” Dutch security expert Hans Van de Looy told Computerworld, citing anonymous sources. Van de Looy says certificates for mozilla.com, yahoo.com and torproject.org were among those obtained by the hackers. Mozilla’s Johnathan Nightingale, director of Firefox development, confirmed the breac...

Gingerbread update for the Motorola DROID 2 is being pushed out pronto to handsets
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsMotorolaGoogleDROID 2Android 2.3
There’s no arguing that the Motorola DROID 3 exudes that perfect combination of dreamy specs and improved design to make it one of the more substantial handsets for Verizon, but its predecessor is also seeing some love now that Gingerbread is making its way to it.
Today, the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update is being sent out and brings the Motorola DROID 2 up to spec with some of its siblings. However, it’s only packing Android 2.3.3 as opposed to the more recent version of 2.3.4 – still, we’re sure handset owners are going to be appreciative. Obviously, one of the more prominent visual changes with it is the fact that it sports a new user interface and color scheme. Meanwhile, some of the oth...
