Netflix updated to work on all Android 2.2 & 2.3 devices

Netflix updated to work on all Android 2.2 & 2.3 devices

Posted on Sep 12, 2011 by MG1

Netflix is awesome. That's not news, it's just an unavoidable fact. The trouble was that the Android app was only available on a couple dozen devices (unless you were willing to do some hacking), but those dark days are over. Netflix for Android now supports any device running Froyo (2.2) or Gingerbread (2.3).
According to Google's latest stats, about 82% of Android handsets are running 2.2+, so if you're one of the unlucky few who doesn't yet have a compatible phone, it might be about time to upgrade your device. Of course, Netflix recently lost a lot of content when the Starz negotiations fell through, and the price bump has gone into effect, but there is still a ton of good content on th...

Nokia CEO says Google Motorola deal creates uncertainty for Android ecosystem

Nokia CEO says Google Motorola deal creates uncertainty for Android ecosystem

Posted on Sep 09, 2011 by MG15

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop has come out all guns blazing in defence of Nokia's decision to jump aboard the good ship Windows Phone 7, rather than taking the Android path.

Speaking in China, Elop said that the Google / Motorola deal has caused some big waves in the Andoid arena, saying that "it's only with time that we'll fully understand" the deal.

He said that for other manufacturers such as HTC and Samsung, there will no be concerns as to how the deal will affect their Android allegiances.

Google set to introduce Dart, a new structured programming language

Google set to introduce Dart, a new structured programming language

It's a bird, it's a plane -- it's Dart, Google's soon-to-be-released computer language for structured web programming. Having hoarded dart-related URLs for the past couple of months, Google's confirmed the (previously) secret project on the Goto International Software Development conference website. A couple of Mountain View's finest will make the announcement official in the keynote at the event on October 10th, when presumably we'll find out what it can do. Dart makes a nice addition to Go, JavaScript and Python in Google's coding bag-o-tricks, but there's room for one more -- we're looking at you, Spot.

Google Music launches on iOS as a beta web app

Google Music launches on iOS as a beta web app

Posted on Sep 09, 2011 by MG3

Google Music Beta seems like the most logical thing to have on Android - after all it allows you uploading some 20,000 tracks to the Google cloud and use them from almost any device, and almost was partly constituted by the hoard of iOS device users, which have been missing an app.

Schmidt Says Ice Cream Sandwich To Arrive October/November

Schmidt Says Ice Cream Sandwich To Arrive October/November

Posted on Sep 09, 2011 by MG3

Last Thursday, Eric Schmidt sat down for a keynote interview at Dreamforce '11, Salesforce.com's cloud computing conference held in San Francisco. The keynote covered a lot of history, several patent issues, the Motorola acquisition and some broad stroke descriptions for what we can expect from Google in the future. One thing slipped through earlier coverage, though. During a brief discussion on Android (at 30:25 in the link below), Eric Schmidt revealed that Ice Cream Sandwich would be introduced in the October/November timeframe. This plays out with the rumors that the Nexus/Droid Prime would premiere in the November/December time frame. Big news? No, but it does tell us that an SDK might ...

Microsoft continues to profit off Android

Microsoft continues to profit off Android

Posted on Sep 09, 2011 by MG1

While sales of Microsoft’s burgeoning Windows Phone platform lag, the company continues to find significant revenue streams elsewhere in the mobile industry. Specifically, Google’s Android partners have proven to be an invaluable asset for the Redmond-based tech giant. Microsoft’s revenue from royalties HTC is forced to pay on each Android phone it sells is estimated to be between three and five times the company’s Windows Phone revenue, which could help explain why Microsoft has been so quiet to date when it comes to marketing its new mobile OS. Now, Microsoft has announced new agreements with ViewSonic and Acer that will bring in cash from two more Android vendors. Read on for more.

Google announced on Thursday that it acquired the restaurant rating company ZAGAT. “ZAGAT will be a cornerstone of our local offering — delighting people with their impressive array of reviews, ratings and insights, while enabling people everywhere to find extraordinary (and ordinary) experiences around the corner and around the world,” Marissa Mayer, vice president of local, maps and location services at Google said in a blog post. “I’m incredibly excited to collaborate with ZAGAT to bring the power of Google search and Google Maps to their products and users, and to bring their innovation, trust and wealth of experience to our users.” ZAGAT was started more than 32 years ago by a couple, T...

Google’s cloud music service now available on iOS

Google’s cloud music service now available on iOS

Posted on Sep 09, 2011 by MG1

The Google Music service that launched back at Google I/O will now work on iOS devices, including both iPhones and iPads. The service has generated very little buzz since its inception and still remains in a private beta stage. However, the service had been rumored for months before its launch and is Google’s first major attempt to rival Amazon’s Cloud Player and Apple’s iTunes with iCloud.
Google struggled with securing licensing deals with major record label companies, causing several delays, and ultimately decided to launch it without much music industry support. Hence, Google Music operates similar to Amazon’s Cloud Player as a digital locker for mp3s rather than a fully integrated music...

Android 'Ice Cream Sandwich' Coming in October or November?

Android 'Ice Cream Sandwich' Coming in October or November?

Posted on Sep 09, 2011 by MG1

Last Friday, Google chairman Eric Schmidt slipped that Android 4.0, the next major overhaul to the mobile operating system, will be released in "October or November."
Speaking to Salesforce.com CEO Marc Benioff at the Dreamforce conference, Schmidt said, "We have a new operating system, internally known as Ice Cream Sandwich for some reason, which is being released in October, November." Scroll down to watch the entire keynote; Schmidt slips at 30:28 mark, as reported by AndroidandMe.com.
Up to now, Google hasn't provided a release date for Ice Cream Sandwich, but perhaps Schmidt thought it was an obvious point given unconfirmed reports of Verizon possibly launching the Droid Prime, the firs...

Google gives HTC Patents to Sue Apple

Google gives HTC Patents to Sue Apple

Filed in: AppleHTCGoogle

I am not a fan of patent wars in the technology space. Especially if its about software patents. In most cases consumers lose at the end as innovation and broad availability of products get stifled. Apple is currently trying to slow down the Android camp with patent infringement lawsuits. Samsung and HTC are the most well known targets right now. HTC has got now indirect support from Google. Bloomberg reports that HTC has sued Apple yesterday using a bunch of patents they got from Google.
Looking at what the lawsuit is about, it just shows how lame these patent battles are. The infringed patents are about a way to upgrade software wirelessly, a way to transfer data between a microprocessor a...

Samsung GT-I9250 'confirmed' as Google Nexus Prime

Samsung GT-I9250 'confirmed' as Google Nexus Prime

Posted on Sep 08, 2011 by MG1

Samsung's upcoming GT-I9250 smartphone has been pretty much confirmed as the Google Nexus Prime based on the handset's user agent profile (UAP) hosted on a Samsung-owned website.

Sitting on the wap.samsungmobile.com domain, the UAP is titled nexusprime.xml and makes reference to the model number GT-I9250 – we already guessed that this would be the Nexus Prime, leaving the GT- I9220 as be the Samsung-branded version of the phone.
The other sliver of information gleaned from the file is that the handset will have a 480x800 WVGA resolution display – which fits with the rumoured Super AMOLED screen we've been hearing so much about.
The prime of life
Sadly there's no indication of whether or not...

Eric Scmidt confirms ICS for October or November (w/ video of full Dreamforce interview)

Posted on Sep 08, 2011 by MG1

Eric Schmidt is a dream for journalists. He is constantly giving out great quotes and sound bytes, regardless if he means to or not. In his recent interview at the Dreamforce conference, Eric went through an overview of the history of Android and even let it slip that Ice Cream Sandwich is almost ready and will be released in either October or November.
This information jives perfectly with everything that we've heard about ICS and the Nexus Prime/DROID Prime, which will be the flagship device for the new version of the OS. It's definitely good to hear that everything is still on track. And, even better is the bit where Eric said it may be released in November, meaning that Google is not ru...

Samsung accidentally confirms the upcoming Nexus Prime

Samsung accidentally confirms the upcoming Nexus Prime

Posted on Sep 08, 2011 by MG1

Samsung has accidentally confirmed the existence of the next Nexus device by uploading something called a “user agent profile”. Mobile phone makers create said files so developers and websites know the capabilities of the device a user is using to access their content. While it doesn’t provide a complete spec sheet, it does give some hints as to what we can come to expect. For one thing, the name “Nexus Prime” has finally been confirmed. We’d honestly be shocked if Google or Samsung decided to change this. Next up, we know the technical name of the device, the “GT-I9250″. This will come in handy when combing through FCC documents and other certification pages, looking for hints as to the typ...
