LG 'heavily in discussions' with Google to make next Nexus phone
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesLGGoogle
Google's Nexus program produces the pinnacle of Android devices every year — they're always the first to get the latest version of the operating system and they follow strict Google guidelines. So far HTC, Motorola, and Samsung have had their turn with the program, and now LG is working to get in the game. Ramchan Woo, the leader of the company's smartphone division told CNET that "We're heavily in discussions" with Google to make the next Nexus phone. However, it's noted that no firm commitments have been made yet.

Mozilla teams up with LG for a mysterious device, aims to rival Apple and Google
Like UnlikeFiled in: LGAppleGoogle
Mozilla has teamed up with none other than LG for the release of its first mobile device at MWC 2012, a “source close to the matter” confirmed for ExtremeTech. What’s more - Mozilla CTO and creator of JavaScript Brendan Eich said there will be multiple partners, not just one partnership announced at the show.
The Mozilla-LG phone is expected to be powered by Mozilla’s brand new Boot to Gecko (B2G) operating system, which should strengthen Firefox’s position in the battle of browsers. The actual device will be aimed at developers, not the mass user initially.
There are no further details about specs or price of the upcoming device, but it’s allegedly possible for it to go on sale as soon as ...

Google's Nexus tablet may enter production in April
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsGoogle
Speculation surrounding an own-brand Google tablet began late last year when Google chairman Eric Schmidt was quoted as saying the company planned to soon “market a tablet of the highest quality.” The slate is expected by many to be a 7-inch Nexus-branded device that will run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and compete with the Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet at $199. The device could also push some Android partners out of the tablet market. Speaking with CNET, DisplaySearch analyst Richard Shim stoked the fire, noting that the Google slate will enter production in April and the initial run will yield between 1.5 million and 2 million units. Shim also said that the Nexus Tablet will feature a hig...

Veteran Googler Dennis Woodside To Replace Sanjay Jha As Motorola Mobility CEO
Like UnlikeFiled in: MotorolaGoogle
With Google’s purchase of Motorola nearing completion, some anonymous sources close to the situation have revealed that a management shakeup is in the works too. According to a new report from Bloomberg, Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha will be replaced by veteran Googler Dennis Woodside when the deal comes to a close.
Woodside is no stranger to the Google-Motorola situation — in addition to serving as an SVP and President of Google Americas, Woodside was also chosen to lead Motorola Mobility’s integration into Google last September. Though Woodside’s selection for the spot isn’t a huge surprise considering his role in bringing the two companies together, earlier rumors indicated that Google Chief Bu...

Box gives Android users 50GB free
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
On the heels of its latest release for Android, Box is sweetening up the pot with an offer that is pretty hard to refuse. Between now and March 23, 2012, any Box personal user who downloads Box for Android will receive 50 GB of storage free for life.
For those not familiar with Box, it is a cloud storage service, not to dissimilar from the wildly popular DropBox. The personal version is free, supports 1 user per account, and allows files sizes from 25 MB to 1 GB. It does need to be noted that, traditionally, file sizes over 25 MB subject the account to additional monthly fees. Another huge plus of the current offer is that file upload limits are being bumped up to 100MB. Once your files ar...

Google Nexus tablet may have a 7-inch display, $199 price tag, rumors reiterate
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsGoogle
Wow, it has been a while since we last had a rumor about a Google branded tablet. Last time, which was about six weeks ago, it was claimed that a 7-inch slate priced at $199 was being readied for a late Q2 release. But although that information seemed a bit shaky for us at the time, the odds of it turning out to be accurate are raising as we now have another source providing similar claims.
According to Richard Slim, who is an analyst with DisplaySearch, Google is indeed working on a tablet with a 7-inch display and 1280 by 800 pixels of resolution. Moreover, manufacturing of the first batch of tablets – between 1.5 and 2 million units, is set to begin in April. Interestingly, he also claims...

Google to deliver “an array of consumer devices,” to challenge Apple?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Google Music is not living up to expectations - that’s the quick summary derived from various Google managers talking to recording labels, CNET learned from inside sources. But that’s not what customers really care deeply about - with Rdio and other monthly subscription services, there are plenty of alternatives. What’s interesting, though, in CNET’s scoop is that Google is once again suggested to be working on hardware.
Googlers allegedly said that the music service will get a big push from Google marketing later on, after Google finishes work on its hardware strategy.
And yes, this means that Google will enter in direct competition with Apple over consumer products. CNET says Google will ...

Google Fiber enters application to offer television service in Kansas City
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Residents of Kansas City (both the one in Missouri and in Kansas) are already pretty lucky — Google announced last year that the cities would be its testbed for an affordable new fiber internet service that offered speeds up to 1Gbps. Now it looks like Google's darling cities are going to be the spot for another new service as well: an at-home video service to compete with cable and satellite operators. According to The Wall Street Journal, the search giant has entered an application to the Missouri Public Service to gain permission to offer such a service later this year, and its expected that Google would make a similar request in Kansas.

Google Docs for Android updated with live edits, rich text, enhanced navigation
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
Google Docs for Android phones and tablets has just received a much-needed update. While the search giant sated many by launching a native app last year (and by adding offline access earlier this month), it was really just an enhanced version of the mobile web app. This update most notably introduces live updates to mobile, just like the fully-fledged web app for PCs. This means that if you are collaborating with a colleague on a report, you'll be able to see their edits as they make them. Another major improvement is that rich text has finally made its way to the app, so you can do the oh-so-simple but oh-so-needed things, like bolding, italicizing, and underlining text. Editing has also be...

Android powered Google AR glasses to land this year
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
According to a report by the New York Times tech section Bits, we could be seeing the much-speculated Android-powered Google AR glasses landing before 2012 is up.
We first got wind of the project at the end of last year when 9to5Google ran a story claiming it was an open secret that Google was working on wearable technology in its secret Google X lair, and that the search giant was "in late prototype stages of wearable glasses" that "provide a display with a heads up computer interface".
The Google-centric blog then followed this up this month with claims that the HUD glasses "have a front-facing camera used to gather information and could aid in augmented reality apps" and "will also take p...

Adobe and Google to bring Flash Player to Linux
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Adobe has announced that it, and Google will be partnering to bring Adobe Flash Player to Linux users. The move has been talked about in the recently released roadmap from Adobe for Flash runtimes. The duo plan to work closely together on the development of a single modern API for hosting plug-ins within a browser. The goal is to replace the current Netscape API that Flash Player uses.
The new API is code-named “Pepper” and is intended to provide a layer between the plug-in and the browser to take away any differences between the browser and operating system used. The goal of Pepper is to provide an implementation of Flash Player, which will work for all x86/64 platforms that the Google Chro...

Microsoft snipes at Google Apps in latest ad
Like UnlikeFiled in: MicrosoftGoogle
Microsoft can’t seem to stop taking pot-shots at Google, and following the privacy-fear-flogging Gmail Man video comes an attack on the Office-rivaling Google Apps. The new video – which you can see after the cut – pits a sleazy Google Apps salesman against the enterprise market and, somewhat bizarrely, some soulful crooning about how we should fear the “Googlighting” man and the possibility that Google could simply pull the plug on features we’re reliant on or, in fact, whole services.

Twitter updated for iOS and Android
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleGoogleAndroidiOS 4iOS 5
witter would be happier if you used their official app, and to make their case more compelling they have released updates to their iOS and Android apps. Both versions have enabled swipe shortcuts (or “re-enabled”, as the case may be), and added an explicit confirmation dialog that makes sure you know that using the “Find Friends” feature means Twitter will be accessing your contact data.
The privacy issue likely arises from changes Apple made to their App Store policies after popular iOS app Path was found to be lifting users contact data without permission (something that was possible, and not unique to Path, until recently). The Android version of the app already asked for permission when ...
