Samsung shipped more smartphones than Apple in Q3

Samsung shipped more smartphones than Apple in Q3

Posted on Oct 24, 2011 by MG15

The phone manufacturer willy-waving contest shows no sign of abating as a Samsung insider brags that the company shipped more phones than Nokia or Apple in the last quarter.

The Wall Street Journal cites "a person familiar with the situation", who said that Samsung shipped more than 20 million smartphones in the three months ending 30 September.

Apple has already revealed that it sold 17.1 million iPhones in its quarter that ended 24 September, while Nokia claims to have shipped a mere 16.8 million smartphones.

Nexus One takes a bite out of Ice Cream Sandwich, chews slowly

Posted on Oct 24, 2011 by MG3

The Nexus One, grandaddy of Android's latest pure-bred wonder, appears to have some fight left in it. Developer drl33tmd has managed to coax the old man into running an early port of Ice Cream Sandwich, although it's not perfect. The somewhat unstable build is a bit sluggish, and suffers from media playback issues and a distinct lack of WiFi. Check out the demo after the break to see the original Google smartphone struggle up some increasingly steep software stairs.

Samsung Stratosphere, Motorola Droid RAZR to be first Verizon LTE phones with Micro SIMs?

Samsung Stratosphere, Motorola Droid RAZR to be first Verizon LTE phones with Micro SIMs?

Posted on Oct 24, 2011 by MG3

Looks like Verizon's got a hardware-crush on teensy 3FF Micro SIMs. The carrier's two latest 4G handsets, Samsung's Stratosphere and Motorola's Droid RAZR, both appear to make do with the diminutive cards. Neither, however, would be the first, as that honor was bestowed upon the carrier's version of the Galaxy Tab 10.1. If you're eager to call one of these devices your own, but already sport Big Red's LTE service, then get set to bust out the scissors for a little SIM card arts and crafts. Further pictorial proof of these itsy, bitsy modules awaits you at the source.

HTC on Ice Cream Sandwich: "our goal is to upgrade as many HTC devices as possible"

Posted on Oct 24, 2011 by MG3

Folks over at HTC shocked customers last week when they replied to a question that they still have to “figure out what they had to do about Android 4.0.”
The uncertainty alone was on the verge to become the first chapter of the next Android update, but luckily for the company and HTC owners, HTC changed its stance pretty quickly.

Nokia 800 and other Windows Phone handsets revealed

Nokia 800 and other Windows Phone handsets revealed

Posted on Oct 24, 2011 by MG3

Both Nokia CEO Stephen Elop and Microsoft chief Steve Ballmer have as good as confirmed that Nokia's first batch of Windows Phone handsets will be unveiled at Nokia World next week.
But that's not soon enough for the ever-hungry internet, as pictures of two of the line-up have made their way online.
The Nokia 800, previously known as the Sea Ray, is basically a rebadged Nokia N9 running Windows Phone 7.5 rather than the doomed MeeGo OS.

However, LG Canada sent us note saying they don’t have any information regarding a Canadian launch, we’re keeping our fingers crossed”. Guess it's time to uncross those fingers and get ready to grab hold of this Android. A promo video has surfaced online from Bell-owned retailer T...

Motorola DROID BIONIC to get Ice Cream Sandwich update

Motorola DROID BIONIC to get Ice Cream Sandwich update

Posted on Oct 21, 2011 by MG1

It is hard to believe that after all of those months that Verizon customers were eagerly waiting, the Motorola DROID BIONIC could be wiped out by the announcement of the upcoming Motorola DROID RAZR. Many owners of the DROID BIONIC feel slighted after Motorola showed off the extremely thin and sexy design of the DROID RAZR, not to mention the Super AMOLED display that does away with the often criticized pentile display found on the older of the two DROID models. And the Motorola DROID RAZR will be a little faster with a dual-core 1.2GHz processor under the hood.
Good news for Motrorola DROID BIONIC owners
Yesterday, we reported that the Motorola DROID RAZR would be receiving an update to the...

HTC Rezound leaks in a press photo with an HTC case

Posted on Oct 21, 2011 by MG1

Even though we haven’t seen the official press photos for the upcoming HTC Rezound, a different type of press photo has leaked of the powerful Android handset that shows it off wearing an HTC branded case.
For the past couple of months we have come to know the device formerly known as the HTC Vigor quite well. We have seen it in unofficial photos, videos, renders and more. Although the smartphone is expected to be launched on November 10 on Verizon Wireless along with the Motorola DROID RAZR and the Samsung Galaxy Nexus it still hasn’t been officially introduced.
The HTC Rezound is going to be quite the beast of a smartphone. Although it will not have Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich when it...

Galaxy Nexus was not designed to avoid Apple patent suits, Samsung exec says

Galaxy Nexus was not designed to avoid Apple patent suits, Samsung exec says

Posted on Oct 21, 2011 by MG1

Speaking during the AsiaD conference in Hong Kong recently, Samsung’s head of global mobile product strategy Won-Pyo Hong denied reports that the Galaxy Nexus was designed to avoid lawsuits with Apple. “At the time this was not really an issue,” Hong said, speaking about the design process of the phone. “I don’t know where that rumor is from.” The gossip started with an early report from an industry insider who suggested Samsung delayed its planned launch in San Diego due to last minute tweaks that were required to avoid patent lawsuits. Then on Wednesday, Yonhap News Agency quoted Samsung’s mobile head Shin Jong-kyun on Wednesday as saying, “We will avoid everything we can and take patents ...

Asus Padfone release date comfirmed

Asus Padfone release date comfirmed

Posted on Oct 20, 2011 by MG1

Fusion-fans will be overjoyed to hear the Asus Padfone release date has finally been unveiled.
Jonney Shih, Asus Chairman, took to the stage at AsiaD to confirm that the tablet and phone combination will be launched in Q1 2012.
He also stated that Ice Cream Sandwich would indeed also be on board the tablet-phone combination, which is something of a blessing given that many phones will be running or about the run Android 4.0 when the phone is launched.
In fairness to Shih, this isn't really anything new - Asus promised to deliver the Padfone in 'early 2012' when the phone was launched in June this year and it seems that promise is holding.

The HTC Radar 4G shows up on T-Mobile USA’s website as coming soon

Posted on Oct 20, 2011 by MG1

The HTC Radar 4G has shown up on T-Mobile USA’s website as coming soon. The handset is currently expected to hit stores on the 2nd November, and T-Mobile is touting its HSDPA+ abilities, which the carrier and AT&T are both labelling as 4G speeds.
While the handset is welcome, many T-Mobile USA subscribers are still complaining that they will not be getting the HTC Titan, a somewhat more premium handset, that may have to wait for the T-Mobile/AT&T merger to be available to all.

Ice Cream Sandwich for Motorola DROID RAZR landing in early 2012

Ice Cream Sandwich for Motorola DROID RAZR landing in early 2012

Posted on Oct 20, 2011 by MG1

Motorola’s senior vice president of portfolio and product management Alain Mutricy confirmed on Wednesday that the DROID RAZR, announced Tuesday for Verizon Wireless, will receive an Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update early next year. Mutricy explained that the phone was designed to run Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), which will be installed when it hits the market, but that Motorola has already created a time frame for an Android 4.0 roll-out, Pocket-lint said. Without support for NFC, however, features such as Android Beam will not be operational. The DROID RAZR is equipped with a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, a large Super AMOLED Advanced display with a qHD resolution, an 8-megapixel camera a...

Galaxy Nexus signup page includes seven US carriers, endless speculation

Galaxy Nexus signup page includes seven US carriers, endless speculation

Posted on Oct 20, 2011 by MG1

Samsung and Google still haven't officially revealed which US carriers will be getting the Galaxy Nexus next month -- even though Verizon has been leaked, is shown in the official trailer (included after the break, look at 0:22), and there was a quickly-retracted Facebook confirmation earlier today. Now, the official signup page for release info on Samsung's site allows users to show their carrier preference between AT&T, Cellular South, Metro PCS, Sprint, T-Mobile, US Cellular, and Verizon. It's hardly a confirmation this latest Android phone will ever be available on all of them, but even if you're not on Big Red, we won't kill your Ice Cream Sandwich dreams yet.

Samsung's Galaxy Nexus reportedly built to avoid Apple patent lawsuits

Samsung's Galaxy Nexus reportedly built to avoid Apple patent lawsuits

Posted on Oct 20, 2011 by MG1

Samsung specifically designed the Galaxy Nexus to avoid patent lawsuits from Apple, Samsung’s mobile chief Shin Jong-kyun told Yonhap News Agency Wednesday. “We will see if it will be 100 percent free” from patent infringement lawsuits, he explained, noting that the current ongoing patent war with Apple is in its fledgling stages. “I think it is just a start and [the battle] will last for a considerable time,” Shin explained. “I don’t think there is much gain. What we are losing is the pride in our brand. We will avoid everything we can and take patents very seriously.” Samsung originally said it had postponed its San Diego press conference, during which it was supposed to launch the Galaxy ...
