Late to the party, AT&T to launch BlackBerry Bold 9900 on November 6th
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesRIM BlackBerryAT&TBold 9900
Whatever happened to tradition? After all, it was AT&T that helped RIM step up and become a more relevant smartphone manufacturer with the launch of the BlackBerry Bold 9000 in 2008. The shape and size of the device had many becoming fans at first touch. And of course, the physical QWERTY on that phone is one of the best ever to be melded onto a handset. We can still remember the ads AT&T was running proclaiming it the fastest 'Berry ever with a 624MHz processor under the hood (compared to the single-core 1.2GHz processor in the BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930).

'Tremendous demand' for free iPhone 3GS, AT&T CEO says
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleAT&TiPhone 3GS
During AT&T’s third-quarter earnings call on Thursday, CEO Ralph de la Vega discussed the continued success his company still sees from the iPhone 3GS. ”We have another device that I think is going to dramatically change those people that are on smartphones and quick messaging devices, the 3GS, which is free with a 2-year contract,” de la Vega explained. “We’ve seen tremendous, tremendous demand for that device even though it’s a generation old. And actually, we’re getting more new subscribers coming on to the 3GS on the average than other devices. So we have an inventory sold out on that device.” Pretty impressive for a phone that made its debut in June, 2009. AT&T said it sold a total of 4...

Swiss Investment bank UBS says that 42.5 million copies of the Apple iPhone will be sold during the calendar fourth quarter, led by sales of the new Apple iPhone 4S. Analyst Maynard Um says that the firm's current Q4 estimate of 28 million units sold is conservative and that Apple could more than double the 17.1 million copies sold last quarter due to international sales of the phone.

The Galaxy Nexus' Super AMOLED display is a minus, not a Plus
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGALAXY Nexus
For all the buzz around Samsung's latest hi-def smartphone, the absence of one little word has largely been glossed over. That word is "Plus" -- the wizened Galaxy S II has a "Super AMOLED Plus" display, for example, whereas the sparkly Galaxy Nexus is merely "Super AMOLED." Did the marketeers simply forget those extra hyperbolic keystrokes, or does the difference actually mean something?

Nokia Sea Ray was once a MeeGo device for Verizon
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIALumia 800
If you aren’t yet over Nokia’s abrupt decision to put an end to the MeeGo project then you might not like knowing that the smartphone codenamed the Sea Ray was once a CDMA device bound for Verizon with MeeGo on-board.
The Nokia Sea Ray is a device rumored to be heading to AT&T and will be one of the Finnish manufacturer’s first handsets to feature the Windows Phone operating system. Recently some press photos surfaced of the Sea Ray which is also known as the Nokia 800. The hardware looks very similar to the MeeGo powered N9 that unfortunately won’t see the light of day in most countries.

Verizon sold 2 million iPhones in Q3, 700,000 fewer than AT&T

Verizon Communications on Friday revealed that it sold 2 million iPhone handsets during the third quarter of 2011, 700,000 fewer than top rival AT&T. Verizon reported its third-quarter earnings on Friday and during a conference call with analysts, the carrier revealed that it sold 2 million iPhones last quarter. AT&T on Thursday reported that it activated 2.7 million iPhones during the same quarter, 35% more than Verizon. AT&T of course, had a steep advantage that has grown even more substantial following the introduction of Apple’s iPhone 4S. During the third quarter, Verizon Wireless sold a $199 iPhone 4 with 16GB of storage and a $299 iPhone 4 with 32GB of storage. AT&T offered the same t...

Another photo of the Nokia Sabre leaks, confirms tiny screen, but is it real?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIASabre
WPCentral have been sent this supposed leaked shot of the Nokia Sabre, showing the device to feature a very small 3.5 inch screen.
The device also lacks any way to switch cameras, indicating no front facing camera.
On the other hand, the strategic location of that thumb over the Windows key does make me rather suspicious of a hoax, especially given the resemblance of the handset to the recently released Nokia 603 (right).
Do our readers think the device is real, or just Nokia throwing us off the trail? Let us know below.

Android Ice Cream Sandwich includes native stylus support
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsSamsungGoogleGALAXY NoteAndroid 4.0
Styli and Android haven't exactly been strangers as of late -- with devices like the HTC Flyer and Samsung Galaxy Note offering pen-based input -- but it looks like that option will soon be even easier to implement with Ice Cream Sandwich. As noted on Reddit, Google's recent overview of some Android 4.0 platform highlights includes a small tidbit towards the end that details the "full support for stylus input events" in the OS -- including features like pressure sensitivity and the ability to distinguish motion events from different sources (i.e. a pen and your finger). Of course, it still requires some hardware-level assistance from tablet and smartphone makers, but native support in the OS...

Galaxy Nexus has curved PenTile OLED display
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGALAXY NexusGALAXY Nexus CDMA
For those of you who like to be rather specific about your smart devices and their displays, it’s time to get down to brass tacks about the Galaxy Nexus and it’s OLED display. Specifically what we want to focus on here is the fact that when you’ve got PenTile in play (that is, on a Super AMOLED display like we’re seeing here) instead of NOT in play (like on a Super AMOLED PLUS display), you get loss of detail. It becomes important when you have a close look at how pixels are shared (or not shared, as it were with S.A.PLUS displays) and what that in itself means for sharpness of picture and text sharpness.

Verizon: 2m iPhone 4 sales, iPhone 4S demand still huge
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4iPhone 4s
Verizon has announced its Q3 2011 financial results, confirming that around two million iPhone 4 handsets were activated during the three month period, and revealing that first-day iPhone 4S sales were so strong that the carrier still lacks stock. Of the 5.6m smartphones Verizon sold in Q3, over half ran Android; that contrasts with AT&T’s figures from earlier in the week, where the iPhone continued to monopolize smartphone sales.

All Sony Ericsson smartphones announced this year will get Android 4.0
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsSony EricssonGoogleAndroid 4.0
Sony Ericsson confirmed that all of its 2011 smartphones will get Android 4.0. The Dutch arm of the Swedish-Japanese handset maker turned to Facebook to announce the news, which will affect a number of devices such as Xperia Play, neo, neo V, mini, mini pro, Ray, Pro, active, arc and arc S. In other words, the new Android Ice Cream Sandwich is optimized enough to be able to run on phones with a single-core 1GHz processor or at least Sony Ericsson thinks so. The company will first release Gingerbread 2.3.4 updates, though.
